      I mean she's not wrong... 2 freedom units (3.22km) is a short trip if you're driving (about 7 minutes of driving)
      Not to mention American roads are built for driving and not much walking
      Now if it's 2 miles of walking it's a different story...
      Unironically I think there's a meme about how Americans and Europeans perceive distance differently besides the unit of measurement.

    I can kind of understand why CC said 2 miles. We always convert miles to km, but rarely the opposite way. After all, why would we want to know how far something is in miles? If she multiplied 1.6 by 1.6, she'd get ~2.5, close enough.

    • @DokiDokiAviaryClub
      @DokiDokiAviaryClub Месяц назад +4

      You didn’t see the stream, she went on to say 10km is 16 miles several times, ignoring chat correcting her. And she’s European, so she normally uses km, not miles, so she’d never multiply by 1.6 if she knew how to properly convert them.
      Tl;dr, Euros don’t know what Kms are either😅

      @moondust2365 Месяц назад +1

      @@DokiDokiAviaryClub Tbf, multiplying by 1.6 is just the shortcut to make things easier. If you really wanted to do it properly, you'd have to go through multiple steps: miles → feet → inches → centimeters → meters → kilometers (technically, you could skip the feet and the meters, but this is the _really_ long method for when you only have the basic conversions memorized)...

    People struggling with unit conversions in casual conversation is always goofy to me. If you're not doing anything that requires precision, an estimate is (usually) good enough.
    Some quick conversions that are Good Enough™ for casual use:
    Distance: 1 mile is ~2km. 3ft is ~1m. 1in is ~3cm.
    Temperature: Water freezes at 32F/0C. Room temperature is ~70F/~21C. Water boils at 212F/100C. You can estimate from those anchor points if needed. Simply add 274 to C to get K, or more likely, subtract from K to get C.
    Weight: 1lb is ~2kg, 1oz is ~30g
    One of my greatest joys as an American who constantly uses metric in their job is trolling my neighbors by mentally converting the imperial units they give me into metric, and then replying in metric without specifying the unit.
    "It's 21? Nice! I should go put shorts on..." always gets the best reactions in mid spring/autumn lol

    • @AwesomeAxolotlt
      @AwesomeAxolotlt Месяц назад

      some are too rough for me, I'd use 1 mile = 1.6 km; 1 foot = 30 cm; 1 inch = 2.5 cm; 1 lb = 0.5 kg. I'm never confronted with oz or F when I'm not at a PC or similar, so did not memorize any conversions for them.

    • @obake6290
      @obake6290 Месяц назад

      Americans aren't usually even taught conversions for a lot of units in school, let alone useful estimates for daily life. But some are definitely handy if you ever need to interact with the system you aren't used to.
      Like for distance the only conversion I ever had to know was that 1 in = 2.54 cm. And I'm not converting miles all the way down to inches to cm then up to km. This 1.6 km = 1 mile is useful new information to me.
      For weight one should have learned 1 kg = 2.2 lb. A 1 to 2 ratio estimate is usually close enough. I've never really interacted with oz or g ever in my life so I don't really have a concept of what either of those are.
      For temps I like C = (F-30)/2 as a close enough estimate for normal temperatures. We do have to learn the proper conversion in school, but that math isn't quite as easy to do in your head.
      Oddly enough, liquids are the only daily item that pretty much always have both American and metric units printed on the label, yet I don't have any sort of conversion memorized. I think a gallon is like 2 liters? Or maybe 4?
