  • Crumbling Farum Azula is a floating ruin, surrounded by tornadoes. It can only be reached from the Mountaintops of the Giants through a cutscene, but a waygate at The Four Belfries does allow you to visit a smaller section of it ahead of time.
*Maliketh was the half-brother of Queen Marika the Eternal, a Numen Empyrean who would become the vessel of the Elden Ring and a god. Maliketh was her sworn shadow, unquestionably loyal. On her behalf, he fought the Gloam-Eyed Queen, another Empyrean, and sealed away the power of her Black Flame.
Wanting a world without Destined Death, Marika took the Rune of Death from the Elden Ring, imbued it to a sword and charged Maliketh with protecting it.
Maliketh bound his blade to his own flesh, so that none could ever steal the power of death again. Doing so caused him to become eternally hungry, gnawing at the Deathroot that sprouted from the roots of the Erdtree. He took the name "Gurranq, Beast Clergyman" and began recruiting followers to weed out Deathroot, a vile plant which became a source of Those Who Live in Death. Gurranq's followers feed him Deathroot to satisfy his unending hunger.

This is a very special place for me. My brother told me how to navigate this place from the 4 belfries, and we were both sitting on the couch when I spawned in. And I remember walking my character up to the ledge and panning around and us both not saying a word and appreciating the music and beauty of this area. It would be the last memorable moment of us bonding before he passed away a week later. It holds a very, VERY special moment in my heart and soul. I love you joe, and I listen to this every single night before I sleep to remind myself how fortunate I was to be your brother and share moments like this with you. If you’re reading this comment, hug your sibling. You never know when it will be your last day on earth with each other.

I got Elden Ring about a week after my dad had passed away, and it's a great distraction from the hell I now live in. Getting to Farum Azula, I didn't think too much of it at first, but after taking a moment to appreciate the scenery and music I couldn't help but tear up a little. This place is up there with some of my favorite places in gaming to just rest in now. It's got tornadoes (always wanted to be a stormchaser as a kid), Crumbling infrastructure, and the music. God the music.
    Thank you for this.

Farum Azula to me seems like a love letter to Dark Souls 3 IMO. There are some references to the dragon area where we find Nameless King. We also have to bosses that clearly was inspired in both Gael and Midir. Also, there's the thing that the whole area is a massive dungeon area, we don't have Marika statues and the level design of everything, even the regular enemies (stronger than some bosses with very cool fight designs) are great. Also, it's the most Dark Souls feeling I had and it felt great simply because we had to run to get to the dragon. It's a challenging area, Elden Ring really nailed in some legacy dungeon but this one seems special

Farum azula's theme is really a kind of a spitting image of malekith if you listen to malekith's first phase you can hear that it's tone sound almost the same but this sounds more calm, sinister and mysterious . you can also see in farum azula right after you beat godson duo statues of beast clergyman who is malekith like it's trying to lead you to him or tell you truth behind

The first time I played Elden Ring was when it launched, which was a month before I moved across the country with my partner. We moved to a new city and stayed several months in hotel rooms with our pets, while looking to buy a house. My pc was going to be in storage from April 1st until we got a house and settled in which meant if I didn't play Elden Ring in March 2022 it wasn't happening until 2023. That was not an option. I knew I wasn't missing playing a new Fromsoft game for anything, but I had to rush. I managed to put in over 200 hours that month, finish Ranni's quest and get Age of the Stars. I'm a souls vet, and a completionist, but I missed a lot of the details. I didn't really know what the story was or who the bosses were, I was just moving quickly and trying to check as many boxes as I could, while also packing boxes IRL, phone calls, meetings, and doing all of the errands and logistical things you have to do before a cross country move. I didn't sleep much, and I wasn't very emotionally available to my partner during this time, despite meeting or exceeding my logistical and other commitments. It was actually a nightmare, I was spread way too thin. First thing in the morning, I played Elden Ring for a few hours, then I played at night, late into the night. I sped through the game 1 shotting bosses with cheap sorcery and summons. I figured out how to use Comet Azur and Terra Magicka with no FP. I was trying to inhale this game in record time, not having any idea how long it was. This is a large game. It just kept going and going. Godrick, Rennala, Radahn, Morgott, Rykard, and I still wasn't done? I was thinking how big IS this royal family? I still haven't seen Miquella or Malenia?! I was sweating, realizing that this game was waaaay bigger than I thought. The days went by and Elden Ring became more and more of a conflict with my RL obligations and time crunch. By mid March I was still playing. Our move date was April 1st, and I didn't want to be playing until then because there was a lot to do. I was haggard, not eating or drinking, not exercising. Liurnia, Raya Lucaria, Caelid, Altus, Leyndell, Volcano Manor... I was speeding to the bosses, speeding through all the catacombs and caves, while managing to check every corner and find most of the items (I checked later and I did really find most of them). The Fire Giant was a joke when I summoned 2 other players and we blasted him with Comet Azur x3. But THEN I hit Farum Azula. Progress slammed to a stop, difficulty spiked. I was getting one shotted by everything, deathblighted, shoved off cliffs, rushed down, and my poise broken. I got so lost, constantly. Turn a corner to end up back where I started over, and over. Drop down a ledge realize that it isn't a new path to anything except a useless (to me) consumable item or some more ruins. I forgot about the Crucible Knight I blasted in less than a millisecond and didn't realize he was guarding the path forward. Big mistake. I spent hours and hours of time I didn't have wandering through the first third of the map, the Dragon Temple where you fight the Godskins. Over and over I dropped down, died, circled back around to nothing, nothing over and over. Some arrows, a golden rune, but no secret path, no shortcut, no switch, nothing that moved me forward. The only way forward (afaik unless you use an exploit) is past the Crucible Knight. That's a lesson I learned. So my pace was RUINED (ba dum tiss) and my nervous system was on overload. I was out of time, my world was crumbling around me and I needed to escape from this game that was consuming my life at the worst possible time. Everything had slammed it to a halt! Why?! I felt like I was so close to the end! I couldn't keep staying up late, I had to finish this so I could commit all my time to the move. And that led me to the biggest lesson I learned in Farum Azula (aside from, you know, don't be like me in the first place). There were hours, many hours made up of moments where I wanted to tear my hair out and throw my controller out the window. None of my cheap tricks worked against the baddies here. I was trapped and lost, turning the same corners, dropping down ledges, and realizing I was back where I started over and over. Finally I just gave up. It was too much, I couldn't keep going the way I had been. I just. Finally. Stopped. I stopped trying to move forward, I stopped rushing. I sat down just like this and watched the storms. For the first time, after 60, 80, 90? hours, I really looked and listened! It was the soundtrack to a crumbling world with no time, mirroring my own. There was no longer an urgency to win or finish. Farum Azula taught me to take a fucking break, reassess, reallocate, and come back with unclouded thoughts and new abilities. And that's when I remembered all over again why I love these games. Fromsoft truly makes art. Elden Ring is a once in a decade game and in my obsession to finish in a time crunch, I forgot that. So needless to say this soundtrack and the Placidusax soundtrack have a special place in my heart (side note finding the Placidusax fight during launch week without knowing about it first was truly one of my favorite gaming moments I mean that cutscene and that music though!). You only get ONE first playthrough of Elden Ring folks. Mine was not ideal but you know it's also an experience I'll never forget either because it taught me a lot. I've since replayed the game on another character and did it right. I savored every moment, I learned how to fight every boss properly, I did every major quest the other way so I could see the different dialogues and endings. I understand it now, and I still love Farum Azula. It's one of my favorite places in a Fromsoft game. I love the atmosphere, the lore and the soundtrack. It represents a lot of challenges overcome, moreso than any other part of the game for me, and those lessons were critical in preparing for the Haligtree and Malenia, not to mention the challenges in my real life at the time which I also overcame. We'll have been in our new house for a year next month, and Elden Ring will be one of my favorites forever.

VERY late comment. But for others reading, I believe the intention behind the ambient tracks in this game is to be evocative of its surrounding situations.

Many people feel nostalgic when listening and taking in the scenery that is Farum Azula. Though I am sure a lot of people had left that useless question: why do I feel this way about a place I have never been?
The true answer? The music. If there is one thing about Elden Ring, that without a doubt will amaze any player is the level of detail in the music. You don’t need to be an expert, or even a musician to understand, you know it’s incredible, just from how it makes you *feel.*
If music can make you feel something, then that music is extraordinary. That is the purpose of every bit of music, to make you feel emotion.
In the case of Fromsoftware music, their tracks aim to make you feel specific emotions, so that you can understand the character of who or what is in front of you. that is what makes their tracks so brilliant compared to the traditional 8-beat measure.
But what does Fromsoftware’s brilliance in music have to do with what you are feeling now?
As I said before, many have said they feel nostalgic when listening to Farum Azula, this nostalgia is intentional. They are purposefully making us feel nostalgic, but why is that? Why do we feel such euphoria when witnessing this place.
Well, that lies in the lore of the location.
Farum Azula was once a great, glistening city of gold and stone, ruled over by fierce dragons who brought with them eternal storms. Spectacular battles between the Dragon lord and his enemies were met upon this ground, many tall tales originating from here, a place so ancient it ruled before the glistening Erdtree centuries before.
There is a great legacy to this location, such rich history, yet it now lies in ruins high above the clouds.
A place that was once great, now left in ruins. Much like that of old cities in our world. You are meant to feel sad or even longing when viewing the vestiges of a once great location. It reminds you of how things were once great, how important that greatness was, and how it one day fell into ruin. Forgotten by time immemorial.
There is nothing wrong with this.
It is natural for things to one day fall, crumbling, fading even. All things die, even memories. Or for some of you, those you would call family.
That is why this music brings out those memories…
Of loved ones, of important memories, of moments that changed the course of your life.
Farum Azula is a crumbling city from an old world, much like the past world we all miss, lost to time forevermore.
Thank you, dear readers, for taking the time to read. Now, I hope you can get some sleep.
There are bigger things than the past that await you.
