  • The question is to buy or build, I chose build. Building an overland pop-up truck camper or a pickup pop up as I like to call it. The plan is to have it act like a wedge camper as well as a full pop up. Not doing the vanlife or trucklife so the camper needs to be able to come on and off. It also needs come apart to store in a small space.
    More info will be here:

List of all dimensions and materials coming later with the same link
If you need a link to anything about the build, just leave a comment and I will get it added.

Just discovered your videos today! Very excited to watch the rest as I am planning to build a pop-up on my new Tacoma off road 2023! Thank you for all the time and effort you put into these videos :)

Looks good. How much do you plan on carrying on camper roof? Do you want a crush resistant camper? Determine roof load and lateral shear load first then design to the load requirement.
Consider calculating panel design and strength to reduce size of frames and reduce framing members. It seems to be over built.

I went the wrong way on my strength to weight ratio. Instead of light and strong it is heavy and weak. I’m about halfway on a new design attempt. Solar panels, mattracks and a fan are the only thing planed for on top. The thing that I am worried about is a heavy snow load.

Sorry if I missed this but what does the camper shell weigh in at in this design?

I wish I knew that myself along with the total cost. I will be weighing the truck and camper. Hoping to do that next month or soon after that. I also plan to calculate the costs as well but still trying to figure everything out first.

For the flimsy setup, what was the size of the 8020 that you used?

Everything is mostly 1" x 2". The flimsy setup to what I have now.

What program are you using for the design?

Fusion 360. They do have a free version for non commercial use. I am going to explore some other options too.
