    Art students used to stretch paper like this when I was taking my art A levels in the UK back in 1980. I'd completely forgotten about stretching paper this way. Now I'm reminded of this technique I think I'll return to it. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

      Thanks for watching. I'm glad it brought back memories of the 80's, (I'm guessing your my age 😁), but I really think the other method I show in my other video is a much better way

    I soak my paper thoroughly for say 10 min or longer in a large sink. Lay it on a piece of foamcore board. Staple around the edges on 4 inch centers. Allow to dry naturally and there you have it. No tape. No hair dryer. Tight as a drum between the stapled edges.

      Yep, that the best way Mike - which is why I also made another video titled: The BEST way to stretch paper. This one is just for those who still have(or prefer) to use tape. Thanks for watching

    I still prefer this method over the staples...paper tape is more reliable and it has a cleaner finish to it :)

    • @charles-sluga
      @charles-sluga  6 месяцев назад

      Wow,I actually find the exact opposite. Staples more reliable and a cleaner finish. Maybe we should swap - I'll give you my tape and you give me your staples😂

    The Sluga Stretch works! I'm just starting to work with bigger cotton sheets so this step has become crucial. You've helped me say goodbye to masking tape, and only wetting one side of the paper.

    Great video, all clear and concise and I liked the funny interludes! I'd always thought a hairdryer was a no no for paper stretching but it seems that you just have to use it in the right way. Will give it a try -thanks.

    Great video!! What fun! Do you have to seal the board?? What with??? 😫🎀

    • @charles-sluga
      @charles-sluga  2 года назад +1

      If you are using Gator board, there is no need to seal it. If plywood, then you need to varnish it - just regular old varnish...or you could even coat it with gesso. You are just trying to stop the chemicals coming out of the plywood and staining or damaging your paper.

    Hello Charles,
    Very informative video :-) What happens if you leave the paper to dry on its own without using a hairdryer?
    Is it crucial to use a hair dryer? Just happened upon your channel today and enjoyed this video and will watch more.

      Hi Helen,
      Thanks for watching my video. It is much appreciated. In answer to your question - it is fine to let the paper dry on its own without using the hair dryer. Hair dryer is definitely not crucial.Hope all is well in sunny California. :)

    Once the paper is dry, do I work directly on the painting, then once the artwork is done, do I cut it out or remove the tape ?

    • @charles-sluga
      @charles-sluga  3 месяца назад

      Hi Don,
      Yes you work directly on the paper once it is dry. After you have finished your painting you can slip a knife under the edge of the tape and cut it off. If you wish to remove the brown tape from the watercolour paper you can carefully wet it with warm water and then after a few minutes you can rub the brown tape off. I tend to leave it on though because when I frame, the mat will cover it. Thanks for watching.

      Charles, thankyou so much, I didn't really expect a reply, Sir! you are a Gentleman. Yes I will leave the brown paper on,. Thank you so much for the advise and for the great tuition.

    Is there such a thing as bad gummed tape?

    • @charles-sluga
      @charles-sluga  Год назад +1

      I would imagine there is. I have only come across a bad batch once, where the gum had deteriorated and wouldn't stick at all. Since I don't use gummed tape any more, it is never an issue 🙂
