Erin Jeanne McDowell, I knew this was who you were before you told your story. You exude that love, nurturing, laughter, and smarts. I’m so pleased to “know” you. Thank you for sharing!
What a touching and sweet way to share your journey. It made me cry thinking about my cooking experiences with my father and his sisters. Thanks for this wonderful video!
I had to choke back tears watching this, my father recently passed away, and my mother passed away in 2012 and me and my mother always were in the kitchen together, she taught me how to can, jellies and tomatoes, and all thoes wonderful things, some new people have moved into my family home, ive not been able to go back yet the hurt is still to fresh but i would like to visit one day, thank you for this video, is very heartfelt and lovely hearing your story erin
During the pandemic I was struggling in so many ways. I sent Erin an SOS message and she responded. Her message was full of so much kindness and patience. She pretty much saved me. I am so grateful for you and so glad to see how you have done so well.
Jeanne…… you made me cry. I too am the youngest of four children and the only girl. I always loved baking growing up and later worked with a wonderful lady in a cooking school where we baked cakes and being Italian I made the home made pasta that we sold. That was many years ago now and that wonderful lady has long passed away. Anyway since I retired a few years ago from my job as a secretary in a large school it has become my passion. Thanks to lovely and passionate people like yourself it has awoken that passion for baking again. Thank you 🤗
I’m not crying - you’re crying!!! What a beautiful tribute. I love your story. Erin Jeanne McDowell, you’re not wrong, pieces of her are everywhere that I’ve spread with your guidance. You’re a gift to us all! ❤
I was so touched by this, it made me cry, and miss my mom and grandmother! I have passed it along to my sisters. Thanks for sharing so much of y ourself. I love The Book on Pie and have already learned so much from you. You history makes me feel your presence! Sending you a big hug, Erin Jeanne McDowell! Let me know if you are ever in Los Angeles! Annis🥧😍
Thank you, you said exactly what I feel. It wasn't my grandmother's chicken, but how warm her house was when we hit the door, how it smelled so good, how my grandparents were always so glad to see us, etc. I have my mother's cookie cutters. She taught me to make sugar cookies when I was young. I had three younger sisters (3 years) and they were triplets. Mom always had her hand full but even more at Christmas. I still make them and ship to my family. While they are the best sugar cookies ever (1960 something Betty Crocker), it isn't the cookies...it is all about the memories. The time spent with her, the signal that we would spend lots of family time together, that Charlie Brown Christmas would be on tv, tree lights. It is a lot to hang on a simple cookie but it is true. I'm teary again. Thank you for putting the experience so beautifully.
Your journey to where you are is the story of how your grandmother is still beside you every step of your journey. Truly a beautiful and an example of how many make their mark in the world through love and teaching others the joy of life.
I cooked daily, but was never a baker until early in covid when I was inspired by your videos to try making pie from scratch. In the last 4 years, thanks entirely to you Erin, I've become a baker. I'm so grateful for everything you've taught me, and I look forward to learning more and more. My niece started baking with me about 3 years ago. She's now 12 and is fearless in the kitchen. We cook and bake together, and we both owe it all to you! XOXO
Thanks so much for sharing this with me - it makes me so happy! I’m so glad I could be a part of your baking journey! Wishing you and your niece lots of #happybaking ❤
Thank you so much for this video. You had me crying for sure. It is one of my biggest regrets that I didn’t spend more time when I could with my grandmothers learning from them. I found my love of baking later in my life and have taught myself from wonderful cookbooks like yours and videos like yours. I wish I could turn back time but I can’t so every time I bake I like to think that my grandmothers are both there guiding my hands. You are a joy to watch and I thank you for bringing love and light into the world 🙏.
Thank you so much for sharing this with me, and I’m so glad I could help a part of your baking journey. I’m sure you still make bakes inspired by your grandmothers - it’s beautiful that they can be inspiration for you in the kitchen 🫶🫶🫶 wishing you lots of Happy Baking! ❤
My grandma had the same kind of importance in my life. She was my most beloved person and I was always baking with her as a kid. She could make any food, any pie or cake and it would taste amazing. She would always try new recipes and wanted us to enjoy the cooking. I have inherited the passion for baking from her and I miss her everyday. The day she died, I honored her memory by making cinnamon rolls. It comforted me and i think she would have loved to taste the buns. Just amazing to see all your memories with your grandma ❤ And how it has shaped you.
This is so beautiful. I remember my grandmother baking in her kitchen when I was a young boy. She had a special place in her heart because she probably saw I was the misfit of the children and took me under her loving wing and let me into the kitchen to help her. I will always hold those memories dear to my heart. ❤️
Absolutely beautiful. Your grandma lives on through you and those you have touched. The best compliment I ever got was that someone who never met my father told me they felt they knew him - through me. I pass that sentiment on to you with my heart. Thank you for what you do … all of it. ❤
Stunningly beautiful and moving story and tribute. Thank you for fully fleshing out your tale and for sharing a piece of your family and your heart. Thank you.
This is a stunning video, thank you so much for sharing. It proves that food and baking isn’t just a bit of science or a bit of a hobby, it’s memories, it’s family, it’s happiness, it’s love. Thank you ❤
I never comment on RUclips videos, but this was so touching, and so sweet! I got my love of baking from my mom, and every Christmas we do a giant cookie extravaganza. Best wishes from another Erin! :)
I can't stop crying! Your grandma would be so proud!!! Loads of love and strength to you! You are an inspiration to so many like me and I wish to taste the love u pour into your pies!! i don't have a grandma that bakes, so my grandchildren have you to thank for! U make the world a better place! Love you! and THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for doing what your doing!❤
Well, now I am crying too. I am inspired to share pie making with my grand daughters. They are 3 years old and 1 year old. It's time to start! Thank you Erin Jeanne!
This was beautiful. Thank you for sharing. My Granny and I are very much a like and she'll be 97 soon. I'm VERY aware of the moments slipping by. This video wrecked me a bit. 😭❤️
Time is precious, and there’s never enough of it! But feeling that way is just a reminder that you’ve had something special that you don’t want to be without 💖 My grandma is still with me in so many ways, and I’m so grateful for that! 🫶
What an amazing journey you have taken us on. Your story reminds me of how much I have lost when I moved away from my hometown and family. I started baking for my mother when I was around 10. I would make her muffins and omelets for her breakfast on the weekends. She was so encouraging with tips and ideas. I finally got a cookbook from the school library that gave me guidance. Fanny Farmers cookbook (probably 10th edition). I also collected the bird figurines when I was a child (From my grandmother). When we are born, we are a clean slate, like a computer with all the potential but no programs loaded. Your efforts and stories are helping load people all over the world with the love and life skills that were passed onto you. They need to be carried forward and will build the same love in other families for them to pass forward. 💓💕 Thank you for what you do. You are passing it forward, with joy, humor, enthusiasm and kindness.
Erin Jeanne. I completely understand your passion for PIE. My favorite pie is Raspberry Rhubarb pie. Kind of an unknown flavor but my Grandma would always make sure whe baked an ample supply we would visit each summer to Maine. I remember sitting around the dinner table in the cool evening ready for my slice of sweet tart delicious pie. I would always skip the ice cream on the side because I didn’t want the flavor distraction. My dad would introduce me to new flavors when we would stop at dinners while traveling, such good memories. He taught me to eat the pie crust first that way you save the best bite for last. Thank you for following and sharing your passion with us. Piekeeps the memories alive with each bite.
LOL! After teaching reading for over 4 decades I came to this site and to my embarrassment read the title wrong! I read it as Why I Love Baking with Erin Jeanne McDowell and thought YES!! Me too! Anyway, I am so happy to see this episode. My own grandmother lived in New England and she got up every morning and baked 2 pies. Back then everything you needed was brought to the door, mail, bread, milk, groceries-plus neighbors. Everyone sat down and had pie. The pies were gone by supper time. I lived so far away I never learned from her-so now I can learn from another expert. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
Thanks for sharing this sweet story with me - and I’m so happy I can bring pies back into your life! I hope you enjoy sharing them with others, just as your grandma did! 💖💖💖
Erin, thank you for sharing this journey of yours. I'm 66 years old, and made great shoe leather until I ran across your videos and bought your book on pie. My parents had a restaurant for my whole life, but being 50 years old when they adopted me, at 9 months old, didn't leave them much energy to teach in the kitchen. My mom's oldest sister loved to bake, but we weren't close enough for me to get student time when we visited... I too was raised in Kansas, but the opposite corner of Kansas.. Your story touched my heart and my kitchen. Thank you for sharing. Have a blessed journey.
Erin, I feel the same way about my sweet grandma. She was and still is, the most kind and loving person I knew as a child. I was her first granddaughter, eldest of four (3 younger brothers), and I hold her in my heart, and think of her many times a day. I bake every week with my own granddaughter (she is 3), and if she thinks of me half as much as I do my grandma after I’m gone, I will count myself a lucky and blessed woman. And now we will learn together to make pie, just as you and your grandma did. ♥️♥️
You are such an inspiration! I love watching you teach your love. My pie game is top notch these days thanks to you. I’ve watched you for years since Food52 and love every video!
Beautiful, thanks so much for sharing your lovely memories. And you're so right. Food and memories are bound in that special place in your heart. My Mom's lemon meringue pie, Dad's bbq steaks, my Gram's roast chicken, Nana's brisket, 1 Grandpa's iced tea, and the other grandpa's fried fish. When me and the sibs have been away from Mom for awhile, all we want when we come for a visit is a hug, her smile and her cooking! Food, memory and love. Nothing wrong with that. 😘
This was just beautiful. I’m not much of a baker or a pie eater…but my husband loves apple pie. Like he finds any excuse to drive 10 hours one way to get apple pie at a tiny diner in Casper Wyoming. He’s tried so many and that one place is his favorite. Maybe though maybe after watching this, I can give it a try, I can let the little mistakes just slide off and keep trying ❤❤❤❤ Thanks for taking up space here and bringing so much joy ✨✨✨
Erin, I want to thank you for making your pie video. I have never made a good pie before so just gave up. Came across your video instructions and gave it another try. Made a chicken pot pie with your crust and today strawberry rhubarb pie. Each time I am getting better. Thank you again.
So beautiful words to your grandma and family. God bess you Erin, I wasnt lucky to know the love of a grandma, which I have heard its just the best in the world
What a wonderful story!! Unfortunately my family and their is all over the place. How blessed are you to have your family history all in one place! And it all started with one person who began it all. I hope to be that person one day ❤
Dear Erin Jeanne McDowell, Thank you for being the wonderful inspiration you've been and helping me to get back into cooking. Very few youtube channels I see truly capture the fun of cooking the way you do, and it's encouraged me to do more with cooking and baking than I ever have. I grew up in a not-so-loving family that treated cooking as a means to an end and often met with anger or frustration when I 'didn't do it right' or 'burnt it' or something (Wouldn't any 7 year old burn their first grilled cheese?). I was routinely excluded from participating in cooking events like thanksgiving or birthdays because quote "I'd just mess it up and make a mess others have to clean up." My grandmother was the only baker in the family. Growing up, I wanted so badly to get to know her cooking and recipes, and just never got the chance or invite or anything, even when I spoke out and said it's what I wanted to do. Today, as a transwoman, I have no contact with them because they cannot find it in themselves to accept me as trans. That familial element of love, particularly with cooking, is more vital than I think some people realize. When you mentioned that you're going to show us how to bake because not everyone had a grandma to help them bake, I broke down crying just because of how good it can sometimes feel to be encouraged and enabled, and just how familial it felt. So thank you, again. Thank you for being you, and for sharing that wonderful you with the rest of us. I don't care about being a good baker, I just hope one day to be a fearless one like yourself. ~Jackie.
Jackie - thank you so much for sharing this with me - it means a lot to me. I’m so happy this corner of the internet can be a place to connect in this way - and so happy to welcome you to this virtual family! I’m so, so glad you’re here!!! 🫶❤️🫶 thank you for sharing this piece of yourself with me. Sending love your way!
Oh I connect to this story so much Erin 🥹 my grandma is exactly where my love for pie started, and I feel her every moment I’m in the kitchen. You inspire me! I’ve learned even more about pie through you, and sharing my creations with family and friends brings me the greatest joy!
You are an amazing testament to the legacy that your Grandma created in you. You have taken the knowledge and confidence that she instilled in you and made her proud. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with all of us, so that we can all have a piece of your Grandma in us. You have been a blessing to me and my kitchen with everything you have taught me. I don't have a living Mom or Grandma, but I was taught well by them when I was young. They are my roots, but you give me the wings to explore food, and my joy of sharing it with the people that I love. Thank you Erin Jeanne
Thank you so much for the sweet words and sharing your experience with me 💖 I’m so happy to have you as a part of this sweet community of happy bakers!!! ❤
This is absolutely beautiful. Thank you for sharing your story and your grandma. Your mom's pie genes must be strong!! So many emotions. I never cried about pie before! 😂❤
Love this! Remembering my grandmothers and all they gave to me through food and just their sweetness and love. This is why learning about our families is so important. They are all part of us and we can't understand ourselves unless we understand them. Thank you, Erin Jeanne McDowell!
Thank you Erin Jeanne McDowell, and a special thank you to Grandma Jeanne for sparking the love of pie. We are all so lucky to receive her benefits of teaching us.
What a beautiful story. I so relate! I have my grandmothers biscuit cutter and tea cake recipe and they are my most treasured things. Since I found your work a few years ago I’m the pie baker for thanksgiving. I’m sure your grandmother is so proud. ❤️
I have been watching you for over a year. Thank you! I cried as I remember my Grandmothers house smelling of baked goods and bread. This is not what I expected. Thank you for walking down my own memory lane! Love all of your videos!
This is so sweet! Thank you for sharing this part of yourself! You teach with such love and compassion and good humor and it's a joy learning from you!
So many tears! With every family member you introduce over the years, I believe more and more that yours is THE BEST FAMILY EVER. HISTORIC KANSAS HOMESTEAD WITH A HEARTBEAT, LIKE WOAH. Everything about you and your fam is #LifeGoals. Love!!!!!
Thank you for these sweet words. I am indeed the luckiest gal when it comes to my family - now you can see why I wanted to move back to be closer to them! ❤
Great story. Thank you so much for sharing. My grandmother was a superb cook and baker. I'm in my 70s and my memories of her are almost all of her in the kitchen. She never used a measuring cup, but instead had a china teacup that she used. Disaster struck when she took it to a neighbor's and it was broken! She gamely adopted a new cup and kept on baking.
Erin Jeanne you are amazing!!!!! I also love to bake ( blueberry scones) and give them to neighbors and friends. Some people can't understand why I do that but it just warms my heart to share and maybe make someone's day, I send you lots of hugs and a whole lot of love.
Oh Erin this really made me cry. Both my sets of my grandparents are the essence of who I am today. They saved my life in so many ways. Thank you for creating this. And for all of you, wonderful books.
Erin Jeanne McDowell, I knew this was who you were before you told your story. You exude that love, nurturing, laughter, and smarts. I’m so pleased to “know” you. Thank you for sharing!

That was so beautiful! I can't stop crying
Tears on my cheeks…Beautiful story! Thank you!
I am so glad you’re posting to this channel. We all have a family food story.
Thanks so much for giving me a glimpse into your own memories - how lovely! Thanks so much for watching ❤❤❤
You made me cry! Thank you for your story!
Made 6 pies today for Bingo. Didn't love the way they looked, them found you.
What a beautiful story. Thank you Erin Jeanne.
Thanks so much for watching ❤
Very special video! Thank you Erin.
This was a wonderful story. Thank you
Thanks for watching
This was just beautiful. I’m not much of a baker or a pie eater…but my husband loves apple pie. Like he finds any excuse to drive 10 hours one way to get apple pie at a tiny diner in Casper Wyoming. He’s tried so many and that one place is his favorite. Maybe though maybe after watching this, I can give it a try, I can let the little mistakes just slide off and keep trying ❤❤❤❤
Thanks for taking up space here and bringing so much joy ✨✨✨
Erin, I want to thank you for making your pie video. I have never made a good pie before so just gave up. Came across your video instructions and gave it another try. Made a chicken pot pie with your crust and today strawberry rhubarb pie. Each time I am getting better. Thank you again.
Thank you so much for sharing your baking successes with me! Practice makes pie-fect!!!! I’m so glad I can help you on your baking journey! ❤
❤
I can’t stop crying 😭
So beautiful words to your grandma and family. God bess you Erin, I wasnt lucky to know the love of a grandma, which I have heard its just the best in the world
thank you Erin Jeanne, thank you for sharing this beautiful story
Well I didn't know this was gonna move me to tears. What a beautiful video.
What a wonderful story!! Unfortunately my family and their is all over the place. How blessed are you to have your family history all in one place! And it all started with one person who began it all. I hope to be that person one day ❤
Dear Erin Jeanne McDowell,
Thank you for being the wonderful inspiration you've been and helping me to get back into cooking.
I was routinely excluded from participating in cooking events like thanksgiving or birthdays because quote "I'd just mess it up and make a mess others have to clean up."
My grandmother was the only baker in the family.
~Jackie.

Oh I connect to this story so much Erin 🥹 my grandma is exactly where my love for pie started, and I feel her every moment I’m in the kitchen. You inspire me! I’ve learned even more about pie through you, and sharing my creations with family and friends brings me the greatest joy!
Beautiful tribute to your beautiful grandma!❤ I'm a small town KS girl too, and everything revolved around food and family.
Thanks so much for the kind words! 🌻🌾🥧💛
You did it…I loved you before, and somehow, I love you even more. God Bless the women in our lives that make us who we are. 💕
Thanks so much for being a part of the Happy Baking community!
oh this is lovely

Love this! Remembering my grandmothers and all they gave to me through food and just their sweetness and love. This is why learning about our families is so important. They are all part of us and we can't understand ourselves unless we understand them. Thank you, Erin Jeanne McDowell!

The most beautiful introduction to a video
Great story. Thank you so much for sharing. My grandmother was a superb cook and baker. I'm in my 70s and my memories of her are almost all of her in the kitchen. She never used a measuring cup, but instead had a china teacup that she used. Disaster struck when she took it to a neighbor's and it was broken! She gamely adopted a new cup and kept on baking.
This is such a sweet story! Thank you for sharing it with me!!! 🫶❤️
So beautiful Erin Jeanne!
