How to Put Line On A Spinning Reel [STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE] | How To Spool A Spinning Reel

- In this video I show you the how to put line on your spinning reel. This is the easiest way to spool your reel if you're a beginner. Spinning rod and reel combos are one of the most common type of fishing combos for beginners. They are familiar and relatively easy to operate for most new anglers. When I bought my first rod and reel combo not too long ago, it had no line on it and I struggled for a few days on the fastest and easiest way for to put line on my spinning reel correctly. After trying a ton of different methods on how to spool a spinning reel, I settled on this one. It's super easy, great for beginners who want to learn how to spool their spinning reel on their own with no help. The way I secure my line works great and I've had no issues except for when I try to take my line off I actually have to cut the knot that I've tied. Share this video with any beginner trying to spool a spinning reel for the first time.

Total beginner here, this is the third video I watched and its the one that helped me the most. I think probably because you explain at an easy pace, and that everything you are doing is in frame... chill vibes don't hurt either. ;)
Hey Daniel! That was the goal man! So happy to hear that it helped you!
2 step is to say rod not pole
Agree 100%
@@RamonOutdoorsthis is my 4th or 5th video and I cannot figure out what I am doing wrong. I have restarted a good 9-10 times and the line just won’t spool around the reel. It just spins and ultimately twists the line. It’s an older, cheap reel, but I definitely feel like the problem is with me and not the reel itself.
@@RamonOutdoorsI feel like it shouldn’t take me 4 hours to accomplish this and yet I have gotten nowhere.
Haven’t touched a pole in years; getting ready to go out with the boys in literally like one hour. Best video I found; thanks!
Glad it helped! Hopefully you boys catch a BIG ONE!

Thank you for an excellent video. I haven't fished since I was a kid. I was trying to help my son and we watched several videos. Yours was the one that was most helpful and the way I remember putting the line on as a kid.
I'm glad I could help! I like to keep it simple!
From a (very) novice fisherwoman, THANK YOU! All the other videos and webpages I tried to help me just showed named knots with no clear explanation, or worse, their fingers covered the details of what they were doing. They'd work their fingers for two seconds and suddenly have this braided behemoth of a knot and I'm just like... where the f did you magic that thing out from?! Anyway, thanks for helping me learn to spool my reel!
Glad it helped!
The first thing I noticed about this reel is its weight ruclips.net/user/postUgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . I wouldn't say it was uncomfortable but it was a little heavier than other similarly sized reels. However, that didn't deter my enjoyment of how smooth this reel is. I spooled it with 20lb. Tuf-Line XP and it's perfect for what I use it for. I have it paired with an 8'6" Medium/Fast Okuma SST Salmon/Steelhead rod. The combination is perfect for casting and even drifting. I used the reel all day and didn't experience any arm or hand fatigue except when fighting a few fish! The bail is solid and feels strong when engaging by reeling and manually closing the bail by hand. The large rubber handle grip is very comfortable. It's got a powerful drag, silky smooth reeling, and feels very comfortable in the hands. I recommend it!
Solid rod for sure!
I woke up last week and decided I’m gonna learn how to fish! First trip out tomorrow. Thank you for this extremely helpful video 😊 hopefully there’s not too much crossover on my line!
Glad I could help! Catch a biggin!
Excellent video. I’ve just got back into finishing after about 20 years away from the sport and found this really useful. Thank you for making this 👍

Awesome video dude! Really enjoyed it. Learned something I never thought of before and that is the wrapping the line around the spool a few things before tying the knots🤙🏻🔥
It’s supposed to help the line bite on itself so the knot doesn’t take most of the stress. Regardless all my line has held up well using this method.

Very helpful! My boyfriend and I are beginners. Thank you!

I got the same fishing pole. I seen the reviews on RUclips so I bought it. My Ugly Stick flies into pieces when I cast it sometimes. No matter how hard I push the poles together, it will randomly fly into pieces.
I knew it was going to do it before I bought the fishing pole too.. It's 4 pieces.
I'm thinking of using Gorilla Glue tape on the sections to hold the pole together..
I've never had a 4 Piece, that might help, but it shouldn't do that. Might want to return it for a different one.
I have the exact same set up as you the same line, the same rod and reel in the same tackle backpack
Sounds like you’re all set boss!

do you have a method for ultralight setup? like is there a recommended spinning reel for UL 3lb test braid with 150 meters?
The only difference on an ultralight set up is the knot I use to secure the line to the reel. I have that video here - ruclips.net/video/mH0vyXEdNhc/видео.htmlsi=u21WS2IIYok7qHGV

I’ve been trying to line my Ugly Stik for hours and it just keeps coming off the reel and nesting up. I’m new to fishing but this is the most difficult shit I’ve ever done lol. I’m gonna have to bring it in to have someone do it for me
Sounds like you have a lot of memory in your line. Try running it under hot water and make sure not to overfill your reel.
I've had issues with the Ugly Stik as well, my Braided line doesn't want to hug the rod even though I've tied a tight knot that is on perfectly tight.
What I guess I really need is an explanation you would give to 5 year old because the only thing I've caught today is frustration
@@ginichimaru001 try using a few yards of mono backing and then tie on your braided line. Or you can use electrical tape to keep your line in place.
@Ramon Outdoors grabbing electrical tape now.
Whoever makes braided line needs to make the first end out of the reel kinda sticky, ngl.
I was trying to spool my rod for over 2 hours and felt pissed

Hey if I already have line on my reel and I want more on it can I just do the same thing you did?
How much line do you already have on it? Like half a spool? more or less?
Thanks❤
So do you have to flip the way you spin the reel depending on which direction it comes off the spool?
The line should come off the spool counter clockwise onto your reel.
I wish I watched this video before I put line on. My grandad gave me some mono(I usually use braid). I went fishing today with the mono. Hated every second of it. But I don’t want to waste the line. Is there a way to fix this or do I just have to cut it off???
If you have a spare reel or the spool that had the mono on it you can take it off that way without ruining your line. Just tie to the spool and wind it up that way and then respool it. Kind of a pain to do, but if you don't want to waste the mono then this is how you can save it.
I got the same exact pole does that one also not cast very far or is that just mine🙏…
Depends on a few things, the weight of your lure, the weight of your line, and the length of your rod. All of those things can impact your casting distance.
I could tell by that reel that that was a gx2 ug stik on thumbnail...just copped my 2nd one like last week
It’s a solid stick! Thanks for watching!

Watched lots of videos on putting line on reel. There’s got to be secrets. I end up with a wad and I’m pretty detailed in following instructions
No secrets here boss. What do you mean by a wad?
@@RamonOutdoors I was just frustrated. I.tried to reel it in and it started unfurling and go around the outside of the reel, etc. I put the whole spool in water and kept lighter tension on it and it went in ok.
Then I started practicing casting and got it caught up in a tree, just received my pole today and just snapped my pole today. I guess I better slow down, lol I have to now.
this vid saved me for my first time
Glad I could help!
Hey man. Thanks for the video
My gx2 just came in. What brand of line should i use? And what weight? Thank you
Depends on what you're fishing for! What is your target species or what do you plan on using this fishing rod for?
@@RamonOutdoors thanks for responding man. Theres a lake with some large mouths here so im going to give it a shot
You can start with mono or fluorocarbon line.
I'd go 6lb that way you can have some versatility in what you can throw.
Here are my favorite of each
Mono - amzn.to/3GCjlzx
Fluorocarbon - bit.ly/41luws4
@@RamonOutdoors thank you!
@@lkperez9821 you’re welcome! Good luck!
Mine is a 12ibs can I put a 50ibs mines max I. The reel says 17ibs with something of yards
You could, but you might not be able to fit much line on it. If you want 50lb line, I would go with braided line and then tie on a leader line.
How do i keep it from springing back after i do the last step? (Basically how do i fish with it without it coming loose)
Keep the tension on it and tie a lure or weight. It’s on the very very last step. If you just do a hook you have to use the hook keeper
@@RamonOutdoors thank you man!!
I just bought an US GX2 yesterday and my reel handle isn’t turning. Am I missing something or is it broken?
Take a look at some diagrams online and make sure they look correct. I know sometimes when they ship them they fold the handle in and it won’t turn.
If I didn’t add enough line could I just tie the rest on and reel?
So it depends on what you mean by "didn't add enough line."
If you only filled up half or more of the spool, you can just fish it like that until you have a quarter of the spool left.
If you have a quarter or less of the spool filled then yes you can just use that as backing. I do this for my ultralight reels. I will spool on some 4lb test first and then use a joining knot to put on my 2lb test line.
Basically if you filled up half or more, just fish it. Your casting distance might be shorter, but it wont be terrible.
If you filled up a quarter or less tie on more line.
Hope this helps!
Honestly setting up the spool so the line is coming off the right way is the most important tip, I've made the mistake before of not paying attention to that lol. It's a nightmare, just constant bird nests and line twists.
How you start is just as important as how you finish!
Sup pro thanks for the help
No problem
Gracias!!!!!
De nada!!!!!

Spooled my reel, went fishing today for the first time and it got tangled on me. The line started to unroll when I cast it. Can I re-spool The reel with the same line it has?
You can, but it depends on if the line was kinked up or not.
I love you dad
WHAT?
AYO?
Shout out to pops for taking me here 😂
Bro what
What about when I use a bobber same process but with stop and bobber?
Yup! Right before you tie on your hook you put the bobber stop and the bobber.

What if I bought a rod that came with lime on the spool already
Then you’re good I guess!
Do I set my drag tight or loose?
@@arthurmoreno2969 tight as it goes when you’re putting the line on.
dumb question but what do you mean by mono backing?
Not a dumb question! Mono backing is basically filler line. If you're going to use braid it's always good to use either electrical tape on the reel or a little bit of monofilament line so that the braid doesn't slip.
It has been 10+ years since I’ve fished, my grandpa used to pull us out of school to go fishing
Awesome that you're getting back into it Justin!
Hey Ramon! New subscriber here! So quick question…I followed all you steps and I think I did pretty well following them but at the end when I open the reel a bit of the line comes out a bit and I have to pinch the line to fix it, Is that normal or did I do something wrong? Thanks for your help! Keep up the great work 🙏🏼
Did you have a lure tied on?
It’s normal for some line to come off if there is nothing weighing it down or if there is no tension on the line.
It still has memory from the spool and will naturally want to come off. If you notice in my video I keep the line tight until I hook it on the hook keeper.
Thank you for your quick response! Yea I had a lure tied on but when I opened the reel to throw my cast a bit came out. It wasn’t crazy bad because I was able to fix it back.
I was just wondering if it normal for that to happened or if I messed up for the 5th time 😂😂
@@franciscomitchel8773 ah okay. Did you punch the line before casting your line? I have another video where I go over how to cast a spinning reel. It’s linked in the description and it’s called “How to Catch Your First Fish
@@franciscomitchel8773 It happens sometimes lol
How do you know how much to put on your spool
There are usually line weight and yard guides on your reel. But I usually go by sight anyways. I mention this in the video
Is there an easy way to tell if the bail is opened or closed ?
Yeah, if you can "flip" it down, that means it was open and now it is closed. If you can flip it up, that means it was closed and now it's opened. Take a look at the manual if your reel came with one.
What’s funny is he’s using the exact same pole that I’m trying to put line on. Thanks for the info
Hopefully it helped!
Didnt expect you to have the same rod haha 😂
