    OK. I have one really important question. How do you determine the exact height of your niche, so as to not have L-shaped tiles? In other words, how do you ensure that the top and bottom of the niche ends up on a grout line??

    • @HomeRepairTutor
      @HomeRepairTutor  2 года назад +2

      Great question, you can wait to install the niche until the other walls are tiled then install it to meet up with the grout joints. Or you can build a custom niche. Or you can shrink the prefab niche with scrap backer boards

  • @MichaelM-to4sg
    @MichaelM-to4sg 2 года назад +1

    Stop using Durock. Spend some time apprenticing with licensed, trained professional that can teach you how to properly float walls true & plumb. Your usage of Kerdi membrane does not meet the Schluter warranty guidelines. It will likely leak and Schluter will not warrant its waterproof integrity. At very least watch the Schluter trading videos to learn proper installation.
    Better yet, spend minimum 2 years as apprentice installer for an experienced and licensed tile contractor. There’s so much to learn that separates the diy skill tiler from a true skilled tiler.
    Tiling is a very in-demand skill set for those with professional skills. What distinguishes the skilled tradesmen from the diy’ers is often the comebacks and long term integrity of their workmanship. Learn to do it right in the beginning and you can make a career with consistent demand and solid earnings potential. Good luck to you.

      For one, you are putting a water membrane over Hardibacker that is already a membrane. ( You have never seen how hardibacker puts a piece of their product in a jar of water ? ) Waste of money putting Shultter over top of the Hardibacker (waste of money ) Two, you suppose put a water barrier behind the Hardibacker, and down into the shower pan. You know why ? Three, use a mess in the corners and cornerbead on the corners. You are not the first doing what you think is right. Don't have time to explain why right now, but beginner's do what you do being lazy or taught wrong.

    • @HomeRepairTutor
      @HomeRepairTutor  Год назад

      @@johnjackson7317 I appreciate your comment, but it’s not HardieBacker. It’s cement board, HardieBacker is different. Also, there’s no membrane on cement board or any vapor barrier. Hence the use of KERDI as both the waterproofing and vapor barrier. Corners are tight and won’t interfere with tile work. This is absolutely an approved meth by both Schluter and the Tile Council of North America. As for the water test with HardieBacker, that’s misleading. I could do the same thing with any foam backer board. What you need is the rate of evaporation to be greater than the rate of vapor transfer into the wall cavity. So that test isn’t the best, but a great use of marketing nonetheless
