While I do understand that this is a night club I still think I would have liked to have seen it with much more light - I honestly couldn't make out who was who and how expressive their faces were and how they were dancing! Good music but far too dark.
This episode was so beautifully heartbreaking with the way they parallelled Princess Margaret's death with this night. Possibly one of the series' best! ❤❤😢
I love this scene. The two actresses who plays teenage Elizabeth and Margaret has a striking resemblance to Claire Foy and Vanessa Kirby. The casting director has done a very good job
Not sure how many people got the reference, but that club underneath the Ritz was called The Pink Sink, a gay nightclub during WWII. A lot of soldiers on leave would be found there along with LGBT locals. The band here is wearing drag, some the dance duos are biological men (in dresses or otherwise) and Porchie ends up dancing with either a drag queen or a trans woman! Historically accurate portrayal.
Oh thats fun to think about, in 1945 the real Queen danced with the queens in a country that bows to no queen. Such a random sounding sentence that seems made up. I got a nice chuckle out of that
This actually isn’t the only time she snuck out of the palace to have some fun. It was only until the paparazzi became a big thing that she had to be cautious. Back in the day being recognised wasn’t an easy task.
Yes, the VE Day evening with both princesses happened but its details are pretty unknown. I just hope that that Queen had as much fun in real life as she did in that scene. She deserved the break.
@robertoperezcastro6130 Royal insiders have said that the queen has reminisce this night, so fondly, as one of the best nights of her life. The war just ended and she didn't mind going out to celebrate amongst the working class, incognito of course.
I think a big factor in that was because in the UK she would be more likely to be recognized. In the states she was just another party girl there to dance and be a person with her sister. I hope it happened the way the show portrays, she deserved that night. I hope there were other times she got to just be a person amidst a crowded room
Glad the Princesses could get out and have fun like other people, yet I can see how a setting and situation like this could get out of control and scary. People have accurately mentioned how the young actresses here look like Claire Foy and Vanessa Kirby. I was thinking that the young lady who resembles Claire Foy also has a strong resemblance to a young Elsa Lanchester.
Phenomenal scene. Absolutely love that stomping tune, even if taking a bit of liberty with history - song wasn't written until the sixties by Smokey Johnson. Great New Orleans jazz throwback, though. Wonder who the singer is!?
I found some versions. You can find the song under "It ain't my fault" or "No, it ain't my fault". Most versions are performed by Dejan's Olypia Brass Band. Can some please help me name the song and the woman who sung it (preferably in this version if possible). The Ritz scene was my fav not just because of the storyline but the music... I love that Verizon of the song.
The only thing I didn't like about that episode is the fact that they inferred the notion that Elizabeth was a "party animal at heart that had to suppress her true, actual self to become who she became". That's not the truth. The Queen didn't suppress her true self. She was simply born with the right temperament and received the right education.
@@ohwell94 Well yes that's precisely my point. Just because she knew how to cut loose every now and then when she was young doesn't mean she's had to "suppress her true self" to become what she's become.
@@frname7665 I think it was meant that no one knew Elizabeth had it in her and it was most unexpected She was always so upright and proper and rigid in her duty no one could ever expect Elizabeth had a fun side to her After that night her days of cutting loose were pretty much done

Who is the singer???????? Can't believe she doesn't get any credit for this great performance!! I can't find her name anywhere. I did find the name of the Sax player 'Snow White Trash' a crazy name but an awesome sax player!!
Except Princess Margaret was interviewed either in the '70s or '80s and talked about her and her sister sneaking out of the palace on V-E day to essentially party with everyone else that night. Now, did everything we see depicted here happen? I don't know, and the people who would know are deceased, but it's entirely possible.
No it actually happened when world war II was won or victory day in Europe London was literally partying hard and both princess Margaret and princess Elizabeth snuck out and partyed with the there people even george vi was seen on the balcony a record number of times because the criwds didn’t go away. You have to remember back then the papers let the royals be. There wasn't real paparazzi
@@xashes6552 Yes. The young Queen Elizabeth went to a jazz club under the Ritz Hotel and danced with negros and transvestites that evening. Loved how Margaret told the boys to leave her and let her sister be happy. ❤
I love how Margaret teased the Queen about this after her stroke when discussing a birthday party at the Ritz.
