- Today’s feature is a lyricist hip hop fans hold in high regards especially underground. To even have the honor and prestige to be called that is an accomplishment for any artist because it’s the truest form of what you attempt to do as a rapper. At least used to anyways. Nowadays rappers could care less about similes and metaphors, allegories, creative story telling, using different flows that aren’t trending or coming up with unique concepts to songs like Elzhi’s Fill in the blank game, where he leads listeners to play along on the song “Guessing Game”, “Talking in my sleep” where he paints different pictures of what might go on in his head as he dreams. Stories we all may have but when we wake up it’s difficult to put in context or we can’t remember them at all. Elzhi was right on the borderline of having the privilege to see both sides of how the rap game was and the importance of lyricist, and how it is now, still rapping in the social age where clout matters, personality matters, charisma matters, melodies matter, sales matter, activity socially matters. In some of these areas Elzhi struggled over his rap career and it made the transition from the legendary Slum Village to a solo artist easy to overlook.

He's literally the reason I took rap seriously in high school. All I wanted to do was make whole sentences rhyme with whole sentences and have multiple meanings while matching syllable combinations. And I'll always want to break down verses.
I seen elzhi a month ago at dilla fest here in detroit. He performed last and stayed and took pictures with everyone. Good dude, one of my favorite rappers.

One of the most underrated MCs of all time. Elzhi's bar work was unlike anyone around that time. The reason he could never get over that hill because he was too underground. The game doesn't reward talent unless you have some kind of personality or gimmick attached to you. This was a time where ot really started to become like that and Elzhi couldn't ever get with that plan. He was too hip hop for this business. Elmatic was amazing. I still play it to this day. In fact, the instrumentals on that album even outshines the original.
Elzhi is *MASSIVELY* underrated, he has spit some of the *ILLEST* verses over the years! Like his verses on Little Brother's song "Hiding Place," which is still super cold 😎🤙🏾

@DfromBoston to show how limitless the patterns in music and poetry are. We study Shakespeare and Homer, this is the media that people of this time use to do the same thing. Homer wrote in iambic pentameter. Elzhi writes in patterns that are just as complex.

Elzhi and Lead Poison is what really convinced me to start writing raps his storytelling ability and rhyme schemes absolutely blew me away and I still take a lot of influence from him in my writing today
I feel like his music is better than ever. When you don’t have the machine behind you, rapping like he does doesn’t make you millionaire though. I still get excited anytime he drops something.
Elzhi definitely has the sources to become way more bigger then he is.. I just feel like he holds himself back with his solo releases, but who knows what his plans are. All I know is though is that he definitely has a lot of fire stashed. I wish he would drop more mixtapes cuz his unreleased work is incredible.
He also has two albums that are confirmed to be coming out soon... One with Khrysis and another with Just Blaze & Atrak

There’s only 2 rappers that I know that did illmatic proper justice…and that’s Elzhi and Fashawn.
I've been through deep depression. That shit ain't no joke, man I know what it is when such thing fucks up your self-confidence and your ability to put in work when you need to. When I heard that was the reason for his lateness, I wasn't hard on him. I just wanted him to be alright. Lead Poison was not my favorite album that year, but I appreciated it nonetheless.
Fr man depression is hard to beat , for some it's a life long battle .

Elzhi is cold. His version of Illmatic is one of my favorite examples of rapping and lyricism in rap. I can see how Elzhi isn't everybody's cup of Kool Aid but I like the taste.

I was first introduced to Slum Village by my younger brother back in 99 and have been a fan every since, but Elzhi joining the group was like a growth spurt in a way....He complimented their sound but also challenged Batin and T3's lyrical content.....I hate that he left the group but appreciate his material.....I'm a Hip Hop head to the fullest and I have El in my top 5 of lyricists for real for real.
Can you do a stunted growth video of rapper Techniec? He is from Long Beach, California and did music with M.C. Eiht and Mack 10. He was signed to Hoo Bangin records which was Mack 10's record label. He came out in the late 1990's or so. He was supposed to really blow up. The dude can flow. He was in the LBC Crew and had a song on the "Thin Line Between Love and Hate " movie soundtrack.
I'm from Long Beach I know a couple of people who were in a group with Techniec called dynamic.. yeah I would like to hear why he didn't make it either

In the words of the great emcee and lyrical poet Germaine Williams aka Canibus...Elzhi is "an artist in an ignorant world". The problem is this era of music is catering to people with short attention spans and even worse limited comprehension abilities. Had Elzhi rose to prominence during the mid to late 90's he probably would've received the respect he truly deserves. It is a damn shame because he truly is gifted and arguably among the best to ever pick up a pen. Nowadays it's more about gimmicks than lyrics..he's about a decade and a half too late. Smh.

Feel like he was coming up during the time of hip hop's shift there were a lot of rappers from this era similar to him that could rap circles around cats. The crazy places like BET will never promote them. I remember BET refused to promote Little Brother's Album when it dropped instead focusing on Jeezy's Album Thug Motivation 101. Jeeyz's album was fire but we have enough gangsta rappers out here and the streets was gonna support Jeezy regardless And Then What and Go Crazy were straight bangers.
It’s interesting that one of the criticisms is being complex and “hard to follow”. I think one of his skills is that his lines do connect well and he is actually easy to follow, u just gotta listen. But maybe if u are comparing him to new rappers he would be considered hard.
