      Good call, while it's a slower burn the payoffs are well worth it. If you weren't aware, it's also a quasi sequel to the also excellent Resolution by the same filmmakers with some clever intersections.

    • @AfroGaz71
      @AfroGaz71 9 месяцев назад +7

      @@CosmicIceCream yeah, I seen Resolution, although not until after I'd seen The Endless. The intertwining story within that shared universe was well crafted . I really liked how you never actually see the entity but the movie still manages to portray it's influance and power it holds over time manipulation. It's very much in the vein of Lovecraftian cosmic horror.
      That scene with the Civil war guy in the tent caught in a 3 second loop was eerie af. Gave me the chills.

      If you enjoyed "The Endless" and "Resolution", be sure to check out "Something in the Dirt" by the same creators - also low-budget and low-key, set in the same shared universe. "Synchronic" and "Spring" are also set in the same universe, and share some characters and plot elements like the "red weed"; "Synchronic" is maybe the most mainstream movie Benson and Moorhead created together so far, while "Spring" is maybe the slowest-moving and most niche, but all of these movies pay off in imagination and wonder for those with the patience for this sort of thing.
      You might also like "They Look Like People" - different creative team altogether, but very similar in theme, storytelling, and stripped-down production..
      For something a little different, there's the much creepier and more intense "Caught" (2018), about a family of journalists held hostage in the rural UK by a very strange, inarticulate, and violent couple who demand something the family accidentally "caught" while filming a nearby military base. As above, the small and relatively unknown cast, low budget, minimalist (in this case generally practical) special effects, lack of hand-holding in the storyline, and sometimes slow pace aren't for everyone, but pays off well enough if this sort of thing works for you.

There is Die Monster Die, The Dunwitch Horror, The Shuttered Room, and The Haunted Palace, which is based on Lovecraft's story, ' The Case Of Charles Dexter Ward', although the poems are by Edgar Allen Poe.

    When exactly can a movie be labeled "Lovecraftian"?
    Are all those movies based on a story by HP Lovecraft? Or is it enough to embed some ingredients which are typically associated with Lovecraft?

    • @Metalkid1500
      @Metalkid1500 8 месяцев назад +2

      Lovecraftian horror is just another name for cosmic horror. Cosmic horror is sci-fi horror that’s based on the theory of cosmicism: the theory that the universe is so massive and expansive that there are things within it mankind cannot comprehend and understand. Lovecraft Cthulhu mythos takes this theory and paints a what if situation. It’s horror based on the theory that there are plains of existence far beyond human comprehension. Lovecrafts brand of cosmic horror mixes mystery, occultist themes, sci-fi, and existential dread and creature horror and tops it with nihilistic themes. Essentially in cosmicism as well: humans are a tiny grain of sand on the cosmic beach. We are so insignificant that anything in a higher existence than us can wipe us out the same way we’d step on an ant and not know it.

    • @bleepbloop101010101
      @bleepbloop101010101 Месяц назад +1

      At this point it's 'just some ingredients'. Lovecraftian seems to be a catch all term for any horror that has vaguely Lovecraft elements, usually just visual elements like fish people or tentacles (sometimes it's not even cosmic horror). Others label anything cosmic horror as Lovecraftian which is also incredibly annoying. Because works that actually fit the vibe fall under these categories as well they get labelled the same way but don't get any extra credit for actually doing it right.
      I'd personally distinguish the three - cosmic horror (general), Lovecraftian or better yet 'Lovecraft inspired' (the pop culture understanding of Lovecraft with fish people and tentacle monsters that doesn't have the vibe) and the true Lovecraft cosmic horror that actually has the vibe of Lovecraft's work that does not even necessarily need to be being based off his works (ie something might have original pantheon or ruleset but still follows his basic story structure and themes). You could make a straight up Cthulhu adaptation that doesn't feel like Lovecraft, or you could have a completely new story with a unique universe that follows the same structure and themes and feels like he could have written it in a different timeline.

    • @JZsBFF
      @JZsBFF Месяц назад

      @@bleepbloop101010101 Interesting distinction.
      There's so much stuff that gets the Lovecraftian label stuck to it, that HP would have needed to live to be 250 years to have written it all.
      As for the particular vibe being sufficient to qualify for that reference, I can agree to a certain level but the line is crosssed too often. It's like saying that each tech scifi of movie is Jules Vernian or alien scifi is HG Wellsian.
      Trop is too much but i understand that from a marketing perspective that the label can be interesting.

    *Yellowbrickroad* is one of the eeriest, most unsettling cosmic horror films I’ve recently seen. The really cool parts? Zero special visual effects. The whole thing is the audio, and the script. The writer/writers were/are dead brilliant. It is one of the most Lovecraftian films I’ve seen in a long time. However, the ending sucks. If you want a properly nihilistic ending, stop the film at 1:31:41. There’s a dumber ending if you let it play out.
    One of the darkest, weirdest films I’ve seen in a long time, though. Available for free on Tubi; though that’s got adverts.

The Deep Ones wasn't awful, especially with Robert Miano who has done several HPL themed films. Ya see I've been a fan since I was 8 which means I've been reading him for almost SIXTY years. I KNOW his style, and a lot of these just done cut it. Don't forget The Grabbers, Arrival, The Void, AND Stranger Things - tv I know, but it IS Lovecraftian at its finest. All you need to do is watch for names like Barbara Crampton, Ken Foree, and most especially Jeffrey Combs and you KNOW it's Lovecraft.

    Modernization always bothers me. Do people do it because they actually want to see it, because they think it will appeal to wider audiences, or simply because it's easier or cheaper to film? I love Lovecraft's rich historical backdrop, it was very important to him, he literally spent time hunting for places with the right historical vibes. I feel that filming modern locations, clothes and characters is detrimental to his stories.

    Lovecraft was not the only cosmic horror writer of his time. To say that he owns the title of cosmic horror is like saying Wee Craven owns the idea of horror movies 😒

    • @dvt1393
      @dvt1393 10 месяцев назад +4

      While I agree to an extent, it is referred to as "Lovecraftian horror" because he is usually considered the author that, if not created, best exemplified and left the biggest impact on the genre. And also because a lot of the works are either directly adapted from or heavily influenced by his work. I usually use the term "cosmic horror", but I can see why his name is synonymous with the genre considering he's probably both the most famous and important author in the genre.

    Is horror the same as evil?
    It sometimes strikes me that horror is just a fun house mirror that
    distorts God's ideas into a form of mockery to create pain and insanity - anyone else
    have a take on this?

    • @riphopfer5816

      I would more say that entities or phenomena that run counter to the laws of the cosmos are kind of a staple of the cosmic horror genre. Cf. Lovecraft’s story, ‘The Unnameable’..

    • @BrokenNoah
      @BrokenNoah 10 месяцев назад +10

      It actually is. It had a lot of Lovecraftian inspiration.
      - Unknowable cosmic creatures. Allusion to ancient beings;
      - Said creatures turn you insane when you look at them;
      - In relation to above, if you have seen In The Mouth of Madness, Bird Box share a similarity - an apocalyptic scenario where humanity is being decimated through madness;
      - Some of the people that gazed upon the creatures were somehow "enlightened" (i.e. cult);
      - The drawings of what the creatures might look like in one of the scenes where actually too on the nose as being Lovecraftian;
      There are probably a few more as I am just going by memory. The inspirations might be on a superficial level but it's there.
