I wonder what the framework for the course was.. I went into the secondary system a few years later and it was all BBC Computers, with one dusty, lonely, Commodore PET, in the corner.
I also went to school in Co Dublin (Dun Laoghaire) and also sat my Leaving in 1983 (I’m now 56!) What am I doing now? Well, I got 23 points (in “old money”) in my Leaving and went on to study civil engineering in Trinity. No jobs available in civ eng when I graduated in 1987 so I stayed on at TCD to do an MSc. The Irish job market was still dire a year later, so I accepted a job in London… and 34 years later I am still here, married to an Englishman. In a nice twist of fate, my (English-born) daughter has applied to study at Trinity this year, and is nervously awaiting the CAO offers day on 8th September…

Yes 1985. Electronic News Gathering (ENG) was started by RTE then. While video recording was faster and could be transmitted over the airwaves, the picture quality back then looked awful, even on our low definition 625-line TVs.
Which schools are they at? There was a reference to Blinkers (at Leopardstown Racecourse… forerunner to Club 92) so they will be somewhere on the southside of Dublin…

I was a drop out.
Left school when I was 16.
1983 age 19 I got married..
The idiot that I was..lol
Very interesting looking back, i was a new born baby that year
They were so well spoken and very focused. Also four years later Computer Science was still a bit outside of the box!

There has been a bit of points inflation since! The last guy only wanted 16 or 17 points to do computer science in UCD!😂
Back then the maximum points you could get was 30. I didn't get close to that!!
People going onto study not based on their passion but decided on by how much they can remember in an exam, crazy to think still goes on today
Nail on the head. Absolute shambles of a system still in operation
1:45 Norma Foley was supporting the students even back in the 80s she's so deditcated 😍😍
I was one of them that passed my leaving in 1983. Love to turn back the clock.
Computer science in UCD in 1983. Who would have thought
I would love to know where these people are today and what advice they would give to young people now

Times were bleak back then, people have it a lot better now, whether they know it or not
Was just going to mention it myself. A lot of the class of '83 are in the USA or Australia now.
Deluded. At least Ireland was Irish then.

@Stuart Campbell no jobs in the 80s....no money to buy a house...plus the 13% interest rates might have put you off getting a mortgage..
Still recording on film in 1983? Nice calm colour tone to the footage. Is there a watershed RTE year for moving to video reporting?

Nice coverage, the year i was born 👍
The last 1 was a pure ride
He looked so disappointed though ☹

How many emigrated..
Since I got my Leaving Cert, not one employer asked to see it.
yeah because you don't need education to flip burgers
Yep...all in thier 50's now
They had it all in front of them then.
Now most of it behind them

Back when speaking like Conor McGregor wasn't a thing, their accent seems clearer.
I'd rather the McGregor accent over this wannabe english crap😂.
