    You are a hero. Keep up the great work on the older Mercedes that are more reliable than the cars they’re making today.

    Thanks for opening this video for comments. I like reading what other people say as much as the videos. BTW, I don't understand why it's such a big deal to rebuild the engine. It's a clean car. No rust. If it were mine I would have the engine rebuilt already, drive it another 20 years.

    • @obelic71
      @obelic71 5 лет назад +1

      Opening an engine can be opening a can of wurms.
      The question also is if the rebuild cost of the engine are higher then the value of the car.
      As an mechanical engineer i always would go for a rebuild just for the fun of getting it working again.
      These REAL Mercedes cars keep on running almost forever if you maintain them properly.
      One MB garage in Europe has as stationcar service version of it thats has run 9 milion km with the same engine! The value is only scrap metal but its their pride to keep the car on the road.

    If it turns out you can't save it (really hope that's not the case), it would be really interesting if you could take the engine apart and confirm what's causing the problem. Maybe it could turn out to be just broken rings from an over boost situation, since the waste gate hose was bad. Nice series. Keep it up!

      If broken ring(s), probably scored the cylinder wall which means it’s now financially not viable to repair the engine. Better at that point to install a used engine.

    That vegetable oil especially the recycled restaurant oils creates some kind of plastic carbon mixed layer between the rings and get them stuck when the piston heads get too hot, sure it happened to this one because of it running too lean with too much turbo pressure... Maybe soak the piston in some solvant to get those loose

    So, glad that Digby is saveable. I'm always glad to see someone actually be able to successfully save any old Mercedes, especially a W123 diesel Sedan & not just the German Muscle car like the '68-72 300SEL 6.3 and late '80s 560SLs, etc. I think Mercedes tried to phase these cars out as quick as they could so they could make more money each year selling even higher quantities of their were more expensive cars that would get more complex b and more expensive by the decades and less reliable. As far any luxury sedan made for say, 1999-2009 ,I'd gone Jaguar, even it certainly didn't have ANY "upper hand". Now after watching this nice vid, I'm thinking I may take a drive up there in my 2004 Jaguar XJ8, to where you took Digby, if that car continues to work out okay in my collection by next year. But then I may end up having tho take it down to Mt. Shasta, California, which I call the Mt. Baker of California, located in Siskiyou County, which I call the Whatcom County, Washington of California because it the very 1st county in California on I-5 once you get from Oregon into California. lol

    Again greetings Kent, from down under, love your informative logical approach to diagnostics - looking for tell tale hints prior to jumping, and coming to the wrong conclusion, 40 years in Plant & Automotive with a strong interest in aviation and I'm still learning, love your approach & and dedication to the older Mercs. My money is on broken top compression ring due to an overboost situation, don't leave us hanging, please let us know who shot JR, figurativey speaking!!

    I have a almost identical car with 60k miles.
    When I look in the rearview mirror my view is taken up be three German Shepherds.
    They prefer to ride in cars from the Fatherland.

    Maybe Digby needs a good loooong run. Load him up on your witches brew and give him a long steady run down to Texas for a good cleanout.
