I stopped the whole 'need every new piece of gear' thing a long time ago. When you have too much gear, you don't ever get to know any of it well. Get one or two pieces of gear and get to know them. I use live 10, push 2 and have 3 vst synths. More than enough. Find something that works for you and stick with it. Same happens with samples. Too many prevents work from getting done.
That skin! Like, I hate how koala looks, and wow! I’d use that! Very nice! I did a slight paint search looking for what the hell the app was before reading description lol
Agreed on all points! I really wish there were more channels like "Jon Makes Beat" Or "Marlow Digs" where they mainly just show the music making process. I love watching him make beats. They still get inundated with questions about gear, but they do a good of not getting caught up in talking about the differences and such. When people talk about gear I really want to hear about what aspects of it make them feel creative and why. Complaining about the 4-track limit on the move is dumb unless you tried it and found that it really held you back - and that would be an interesting story to tell in a youtube video.
@@cloud_noises yeah you’re right both great channels. I definitely want to steer mine back towards the craft and less about the gear. It’s easy to get caught up in it. 👍🙂
It is valid complaint. 4 tracks was only good for groovebox on Volca Sample back in 2014. If it's not a legit complaint i don't know what it. Especially for half a grand.
i been making beats since 1996. Koala Sampler brings me the most joy. the fun of making beats again. i loved Reason back in the day.making beats in daws to ME isnt that enjoyable. i like mixing in reaper though.
@@beatprocess I was a Reason user too. Swapped to Ableton but once I got into hardware it changed everything. I still love Ableton for mixing and arranging when needed and the Push is like a good mix of hardware and software. Koala is undoubtedly one of the best when it comes to sampling workflows. 👍🙂
@@johnviera3884 it’s a great app. Very well thought out but without being overly complex and tripping you up with too many features or menus. Killer workflow 👍🙂
You're so right about just observing how a box makes you feel. I'm thinking of the time I bought the octatrack mk ii - I have sm respect for people who take the time to learn such a powerful thing.. But for me, it made me feel... Bad while using it. I just sold it and began trying other things. No biggie - no hate - just my own person FEELING toward it. I don't even feel the need to articulate why I kinda hated it. I just did. I watched marlons video and while he raised some good points, I think he lost perspective on the move completely. In another video title he called it 'the new ableton sampler.' anything with the label 'sampler' to me has to specialise in sampling, which the move blatantly does not. And the marketing literally just shows a girl going up and recording one thing - which it can do. But to tear into it as being a bad sampler is like tearing into a games console for being clunky for browsing RUclips. Maybe not the best example, but still. Nevertheless the main point is, if something doesn't feel right to you. 'Move' on. :) :) much love✌🏻
This combo seems super cool man, how it working for you? I'm interested in getting these two devices move and sp, this way the 4 tracks limitation of move is no longer an issue and the so can be the track builder while move create new parts. I'd love to know how they are working together? The sync is cool? The sp capture loops from move and build sequences alright?
@@BassamAbusamra it’s a good setup but I’ve not tried using the Move into the SP yet. It should work well but unfortunately I don’t think you can send audio via the USB C on the Move which would be a good way of sending it back and forth. The Ableton manual says “currently” it doesn’t send audio making me wonder if at some point we’ll see that functionality added. Even via audio cables though they should be a good combo and work as you mention. Skipback is great on the SP not to mention the FX. 👍🙂
Love your channel and approach to showing how to make stuff in different ways. And what you said about feel is so right. Especially if you compare the tech stuff to let’s say electric guitars. There the specs almost are the same but there a big selection because they feel different and encourage different ways of playing and making music. And they encourage different things in different players. If you have more thoughts on that it would be interesting to hear. And also on why you hate Koala so much. Just kidding.
Some valid points here moving from DAW to hardware to have more tactile experience. Moved from FL to mpc 1000 jjos. Thanks to your videos I've got a 500 for travel. PS as an after thought - all of these discussions are childish. First world problems. Be grateful that you have a roof over head and the money and time to play around with your gear in your sparetime.
Have you used the Move as a controller for Ableton yet? I was doing that this weekend, and it’s a fantastic controller for Ableton. It’s like a mini push. All the knobs automatically map to key parameters, you can lazy chop samples with it, you can use it as a keyboard with scales, etc. I might end up using it more as a controller than in standalone.
Hey bro. Is there a way to apply different saturators on the move at the same time? Each time I select one, it applies to all four instruments. I wonder if I’m missing something, but it appears as if the selected processing affects every synth or drum rack
@@TaylerMadeAudio so the first effect on each track applies per pad with a drum rack and the second to all pads in a drum rack. I’m pretty sure with the synths both effects apply to the whole track. If you press the session view button there are two master effects that apply to all four tracks. 👍🙂
I like your sentiment and think you'l nailed this topic. Its so odd and reductive to reduce music creation and instruments and the expression to being stat driven "gear" to "produce" music as a product
Great and thoughtful take, a rarity nowadays here. Polarizing opinions just seem better for the algorithm. Its a simple value proposition in my opinion: Is it a fully fledged sampler like the MPC? No. Is it a flexible groovebox with good build quality and Ableton integration? Yeah. Is it worth $ 500 for a 4-track Ableton sketchpad? Depends on each person individually. Could it have launched with more features? Yea, but comparing to other first iterations of grooveboxes like Dirtywave M8, MPC etc., these all evolved organically over time in software and hardware. So why can't the Move evolve as well? I am happy with mine, crafting beats and melodies on the road and finishing them in Ableton, and learning to fingerdrum.
@@touarec yeah, you nailed it! My sentiments exactly. They all get improved over time and for some reason Ableton should somehow be different. I’m glad you’re enjoying yours and I’m looking forward to seeing where we go from here. There may be some people who eat their words in a few months 🙂👍
I’m considering updating my Mac Mini as well, to move to Apple Silicon. So I’ve been keeping tabs on the upcoming update and the newly designed m4 Mac mini that is rumoured, looks like it may be worth waiting for. 16gb of RAM standard, a new smaller form factor, and a big jump in CPU power from what I’ve heard.
@@billpayer3745 yeah I’m curious about the new one too. I need something now and I’m not sure about the release date but if it’s as good as it sounds I may make the purchase! 👍
In the time someone complains about a piece of gear they don't have, I've made a new beat with the gear I own and like. If you're complaining about gear all the time, for what it doesn't have, you should ask yourself, do I really enjoy making beats? Is this really what I even like? Because people that legit enjoy the process don't really obsess with the perfect workflow but rather actually enjoy the challenge of a certain process being somewhat of a challenge. All DAWs essentially do the same thing, none are really better than the other, just different work flow. You're right though people take it personal which is so weird. I don't think our egos should ever come into play when discussing music in any form. In short, the fact that there are gazillions more gear review videos on RUclips compared to the number of actual videos of people using that gear, speaks volumes. I feel the ones that are complaining all the time, aren't really musicians or producers at heart, just tech critics. You'll never see Dr Dre complaining about gear and workflow, instead he just cranks out hundreds of beats, because he's actually a producer.
@@heyyypatrick yeah absolutely. I one hundred percent agree. The Alchemist is another good example. Still making beats on the same 2500 since forever and just won producer of the year again! 👍🙂

All these RUclipsrs talking about gear music but I heard zilch of good tracks Not talented enough but gas and corporate establishment like yt gear manufacturers helps them make monies longest they don’t rock the boat Very sad side of existence
Why is that one Koala pad invisible (the 5th?) It’s funny just how obsessed the culture is with “value” and GAS. I just don’t see it that way. I don’t buy Ski-Doo’s or take lavish vacations, nor drink; either in bars or at home. It does nothing for me. But when I see a piece of gear that I want to play, I grab it. If I don’t gel with the workflow, it goes back! I never NEED it. But when I see people talking about price, I shake my head. Make music with whatever you like! But there truly is a culture of complaint around this stuff. I wanted a Field, I bought one. Push 3? Best decision I ever made. But if I couldn’t afford it, the LAST thing I’d be doing is taking my complaint to the masses. Give me Koala and we’re straight. But I have deep pockets when it comes to art and fresh food.
There´s the perspective of a musician, for a musician gear is just a tool, as long this tool (whatever it is) is good enough to be usable in a pro level, thats it, thats enough, nothing else matters... and not even that... slash made a bunch of records with a fake less paul, the guy from Gorilaz made a hit and a very iconic song with a monocord preset! thats a toy!.... gear is just importat because it unleashes different creativity moods in a musician, but thats all. And also we have the perspective of the casual hobbyst, not in the game for the music production or composition, but with interest in the capacities of a new device, almost like when you go and buy a tv or a new fridge, they believe the more specs it has, it is going to be proportional to the fun or the music they could create, but you know its not their fault, its the brands fault and also a bunch of youtuber/sellers tricking them into this idea....
@@thebl8nlyblatantnetwork 😂😂 no man, I wasn’t it’s me testing for hopefully new live streams soon but it is just a recording! You didn’t miss out. I appreciate you caring enough to be bothered!! 👍👍
also you gotta actually use the sampler yourself instead of going off somebody else review. half the time the youtubers doing review with the demo video and not the actual machine in front of them. thats pretty comedy to me actually
It's crazy how many people watch content creators and don't understand the "why" of it. It doesn't need to be free when it's an investment with a near close to time of post return (for some). Why do you think there's such the big race to post content when the "something new" hits or is about to hit... it's not rocket science.
@@geebee44 yeah true, I guess I never looked at like buying to make the content then send back. I wouldn’t feel good about that. Sure send it back if you don’t like it but that’s just a bit sly in my opinion. My channel was never about the gear in the sense of how much can I acquire or try. I have a select few things and the move was the first thing that caught my eye in a while. I plan on keeping mine, I want to see what updates we get! 🙂
I’m sending the Move back: there’s a reason you haven’t heard any demos of the instrument samples. It has hands down the worst acoustic piano sample i’ve heard since 1990. The sustain doesn’t work over MIDI, and the polyphony is 4. Utterly useless for me. The Roland MC-101, let alone the MC-707, completely trounce it sonically. That said the pads and sequencing are good and intuitive to use.
@@lextron-audio yeah that’s a bad cycle but I get it. I have a rule that for every new device, I have to sell one that doesn’t get used to keep it under control. 🙂

I have to agree with you on the K.O II. I find it to be clumsy and uninspiring.
@@e-conrecords4665 I’m sure it’s someone’s favourite but yeah, it’s a thumbs down for me. 🙂
That skin! Like, I hate how koala looks, and wow! I’d use that! Very nice! I did a slight paint search looking for what the hell the app was before reading description lol
@@GirlfightClub 🙂👍

Koala changed my life.
I sold my MPC 1000 ten years ago and went strictly Ableton.
I tried Koala and fell in love with hardcore sampling again.
@@DuckTreeGaming yeah spot on! 👍 One persons junk is another persons treasure. It’s just a different perspective. 🙂
@@hubspin 😂😂 yeah soo true. Guitars are a great example. 👍🙂
Respect brother, you spit some bars of truth
@@F_letc.h I’ve only tried it once but I was impressed. I’m going to explore it more soon for sure 👍🙂
100% agree on everything in this video.

@@zmmmzmmmz thanks, yeah there’s soo much more that goes into it. 🙂
fantastic topic and very well said
Great and thoughtful take, a rarity nowadays here.
My mouse+Push is fastest/fave flow, I made most music and spent more time (decade) with Korg Gadget on iPad and iPhone, hope Move makes there as groovebox (past many years it was OP-Z). We love all gear!

Why is that one Koala pad invisible (the 5th?)
It’s funny just how obsessed the culture is with “value” and GAS.
@@Blogspierre yeah good point, if you can afford it it’s definitely not bad to have multiple choices! 👍
