Skateboarding will never be a sport to me, but I respect those participating in it. Skateboarding is an art above all else and should be acknowledged as such. I'm just glad that people are reinventing the game and creating something they can call their own. Skate to have fun, nothing else.

@@TheJoe89jan I never said it wasn't a sport. I just said that it will never be a sport to me. I think in its current dichotomy it can be considered both a sport and an art. I personally appreciate the more artistic sides of its craft, but appreciate these necessary changes. This artifacted competition allows ideologues to weasel their way into something in the name of profit incentives and not the representation of its holistic importance culturally. Recognizing it as a "sport" is to say that skateboarding is and has always been competitive in nature; far from the truth. I worry that this recognition will lead to more misrepresentation of its roots and that mainstream trends will eventually permeate its market making it indistinguishable from any other culture. Competition has a way of making things naturally daunting in creating expectations for those who simply want to have fun. Words like "officially" and "committee" mean nothing if those acknowledging it as such do not even understand its long sustained importance. Even if the IOC is a non-profit organization it exists to create exposure around something that could be profited on. My issues aren't shared just with the Olympics, but rather any of those not involved in its culture looking to make a few bucks without this sustainability in mind. It's not to say that I'm against business in skateboarding, but that there is a clear demand for original thought and care in preserving a culture loved by so many. What do you think?
I think what you said is spot on. I honestly prefer calling skateboarding art because that is how I see it watching skating and me actually skating. Being a sport makes skateboarding into a category of like baseball and basketball, which is what Ryan Sheckler said skateboarding is not in his part in Oakley’s “Our Life”. So this is kind of ironic to me to be honest. And, Woodward was not cheap when I wanted to go as a kid. So any kid watching this isn’t going to be able to just go unless the prices went down which I highly doubt during this inflation.
There is no one better for this job...Ryan deserves this and more....I am excited!!!

When I was 14 or 15 in 1995/6 I wanted to go to Woodward so bad but my parents couldn’t afford it. I always wonder how much different my life would’ve been. I would at least be much better at skating than I am now.

10 year old me dealt with police nearly everyday, mostly for skateboarding in front of my house. Was never charged for that but the harassment was harsh. Dealt with for years until I grew up and quit! Hit skatepark recently, destroyed 2 opponents in games of skate. Glad it’s gaining recognition. I loved skateboarding

Finally he started his own board company so that’s a huge plus cause he will always be in my Top 3 favorite Skaters of all time no matter what he wears. As long as he still has the buttery Kickflips/ BS Flips with Da Ryan Dip….. we cool! 😂
