3 5 3 TRL Levels in New Business Development

From the sugar platform to biofuels and biochemicals, is the title of the report, written by E4Tech et al. (2015), for the Directorate General Energy of the European Commission. The study used literature, surveys, market data and stakeholder input to provide a comprehensive evidence base for policymakers and industry identifying the key benefits and development needs for the sugar platform. They created a company database for 94 sugar-based products, to arrive at 25 sugar-based platforms of particular interest. Next, they elaborated in great detail the 10 most promising value chains, including the key actors, key markets and value proposition, market outlook, and the emissions balance. The clip goes into the concept of the Technology Readiness Level (TRL), that is used in the report, and is of general relevance when discussing new business development in the Biobased Economy.
