The criticism here is against normative moral relativism from a moral absolutist standpoint. Nothing here challenges the meta-ethical position that morality is subjective.
Hi I really appreciate your comment 💯 The aim of this video wasn't to talk from a meta ethnical standpoint. Maybe subjective was a somewhat intense word to use in the title.I explained things from my understanding. Regardless I understand your point 💯... I'm curious,do have points to share from a meta ethnical standpoint whether morality is subjective or not. Thank youu ✨
We likely view meta-ethics very differently. I understand morals to be emergent rather than intrinsic. I believe they are a complex construction of objective principles (from a blend of rationality and biological instinct) and subjective values we adopt through socialisation and understanding. The way the interplay of principles and values works is that we naturally hold very high-level principled positions, such as "unfairly harming someone in the group is wrong," and our subjective values then interpret what that means. So, using the example, our values will assess what it means to be "fair", what it means to "harm", what a "someone" is, what is included in "the group", and to what degree.
My position is ultimately subjective. When people hear the term subjective in the context of morality what can spring to mind is an oversimplified caricature in which morals are whimsical and based on mood or a fleeting desire. However, that is not my position. Instead, our subjective values are mostly established from an early age and deeply rooted in our psyche and help to form our very Identity.
Hmm this is alot!! I like how you highlighted the part were people tend to have subjective values based on feelings but it isn't a universal experience. I have a question, based on your views is there a firm line between right and wrong? and what do you think is the way forward especially with mixing with different people and different ideologies. Honestly, these things have really been heavy on my mind, for instance in the case of crime, something could be criminal but based on subjective views for valid reasons couldn't?
Based on my view, objective right and wrong do not exist; instead, they are subjective constructions influenced by various factors. This doesn’t mean "anything goes," but it allows for minor interpretations. However, even though minor, these interpretations can sometimes lead to the seemingly seismic moral shifts we see throughout history. To clarify, this reflects my meta-ethical perspective, not my normative view of morality. I fully acknowledge that my moral outlook is shaped by the culture I was raised in and my personal experiences.
Regarding subjective values based on feelings, I think there’s some misunderstanding. My point was to address a common misconception about subjective moral frameworks-namely, that they are entirely driven by momentary feelings or whims. I wasn’t making a claim about whether such judgments occur. Regardless, I believe we can agree that judgments based purely on fleeting emotions are not representative of any robust moral framework.
I'm still yet to understand and grasp your take on why objective right and wrong doesn't exist but regardless I've learnt alot from your take!! Thank you so much ✨
