  • We went to the most recommended place to eat in Johor Bahru, Selera Johor at Plaza Larkin.
Lots of Malaysian food selections, specifically the ones from this region of Malaysia.
We were spoiled by the discovery of new flavours exploding in our mouths.
Kacang pool, nasi biryani gam, mee rebus, and more.

Johoreans are amazing. I stopped by their R&R and was greeted by multiple people. Casual "good days" and "salams". Seems like greeting random strangers is still a thing in Johor. The people in my state don't do that anymore. I hope Johor gets to keep that warmth forever.

Kacang Pool is derived from Arabic food Fu'ul. Original Malay language didnt use letter F & V, so we tend to substitute with P & B instead, while in the Arabian language, letter P & V not existed.

Kacang Pool originated from the Middle East. The bean in it is Foul Medammas in Arabic and broad bean or fava bean in English. By the time the dish travelled from the Arabs to our south ie.Singapore n JB particularly, the "Foul" had been changed to "Pool"by locals...i saw on the BBC travel show, Ian Wright the host eating this dish at a roadside stall in Cairo. The locals there break a raw egg into it to mix but we in Singapore n Johor prefer to fry or broil it first.

Since one side of my family was from Singapore we grew up eating kacang pol. In the past you had to soak the beans overnight, these days you just buy the beans in a can. What I found funny was my Chinese Singaporean friends didn't know about it at all. They also had never tried the murtabak from Arab Street.

Mee rebus gravy is made of boiled sweet potatoes and with shrimp. That's why it is sweet and fishy. The one you are having is one of the good ones in JB. I am not sure if Mee rebus Haji Wahid is still how I remembered it to be, but this is definitely one of my favourites.

  • @AnasSuhaimi

The sweetness of the Mi Rebus comes from the chosen starch used to thicken the gravy.
3 top starches: 1) Potato - gravy would be light coloured, taste bland, often used because economical, but less umami. 2) Keledek (Yam) - Sweet, most umami, considered premium because it's now expensive. Gravy colour is darker than potato one. 3) Biskut Marie - Darkest, sweet but not too sweet. Balanced between cost, umaminess, and taste.

You should try burasak in Pontian, Johor. It is best eaten with asam pedas ikan tenggiri. But as it has lotsssss of bones (and as Steven does not like fish), you can have it with rendang/kurma as well.
It used to be served by Bugis people during raya only. Not many places sell it (I only know 2 shops selling it in Pontian) but you can buy/eat it all year long now.
One of the shops is in Pontian town proper (near the old bus station) and the other one is in Benut (about 10 km from Pontian town).

While in Johor Bahru, Ivanna, you really should try Mee Rebus Hj. Wahid. They have been selling IT for decades and have won many awards. The nearest outlet to you is actually is in the Larkin Bus Terminal building just across from Selera Johor; the food court that you just had the Biryani..
Go to the food court on the top most floor of the Terminal Bldg and look for the Mee Rebus Hj Wahid stall which is operated by one Haji Rahman ( son of the late Hj Wahid) and his daughter. You should also try his Nasi Goreng Udang ( Shrimp Fried Rice) which is superb fried rice with lots of big shrimps!! Bon Apetit!!!
