Katie Freisem I’m with you totally! It’s fun to play loud on a good sound system! I was so disappointed when the movie came out, and they replaced it with a song I didn’t care for! The orchestration on the Stage production is so great too!! ❤️
OblivionHelena To me, he's completely convinced that there's no hope anymore. The ending of the song is practically suicidal. His conviction isn't really a good thing is this circumstance
Oh of course, it's definitely not a good thing for the character. It's really tragic. I was simply referring to the way the lines were sung and the acting ability of Terrence Mann.
I see it as a declaration that he WILL learn to love her, with the kind of all-or-nothing approach that involves taking a risk on your last hope. I think it's a shift in attitude from the beginning of the song, when he was melancholy and tragic and hopeless. It does sound triumphant, and I think that's intentional as he gathers the resolve to learn to love her.
You really don't love someone until you are ready to die for them. It's why this song is SO MUCH BETTER for this part of this movie than Evermore. If he can't love Belle, than there is no more reason to live...and it would be a worthy death. I would even go so far as to say that Evermore isn't about Belle at all. That if you listen to the words divorced from the context...it could just as easily be sung about the Enchantress...
Beast: And in my twisted face There's not the slightest trace Of anything that even hints of kindness And from my tortured shape No comfort, no escape I see, but deep within is utter blindness Hopeless As my dream dies As the time flies Love a lost illusion Helpless Unforgiven Cold and driven To this sad conclusion No beauty could move me No goodness improve me No power on earth, if I can't love her No passion could reach me No lesson could teach me How I could have loved her and make her love me too If I can't love her, then who? Did anyone ever notice that Gaston’s first song ends the same way? With the word “Me,” held at an F note, just like this one? At this point Gaston and Beast had changed roles, and I think this was the perfect subtle symbolism

The bridge of this song is so great (well, the whole song is so great). I love when Alan Menken - or any composer - takes a motif I've always loved and puts lyrics to it :)
I agree! This reminds me of Javert's suicide scene partially because Terrence Mann was the original Javert in broadway's Les Miserables. Also, the conflicting emotion in this song is just incredible.
Terrence's voice is so beautiful. I feel like he's one of those actors that have been forgotten about after all these years and I hate it 😔 He's play so many iconic rolls and I will forever love him.
This song is soooooooo haunting and beautiful... And Terrence Mann voice is so powerful, moving and yet so soothing!!! I hear it every night before going to sleep and works like a charm!
when they play the theme music from the movie prologue at 2:22, that's when it becomes perfect - the next time you watch the movie, you remember his words as it starts the story: Long ago I should have seen All the things I could have been
My school did Beauty and the Beast this year and this was my absolute favourite song I would just stop and listen whenever this song was being sung, and our Beast worked soooo hard on it and it sounded perfect
I hope I can live up to this song and the work put into it by others. Unfortunately I am female and don't have the correct vocal range so hopefully it won't sound to bad with my voice.
Beauty and the Beast, The Phantom of the Opera, and Les Miserables are 3 of my favorite musicals and they all take place in France. I guess I just need to go to France someday
I remember performing this show in high school, and I had the honor of being the first person of color in my school to play a role that is mainly portrayed by caucasians. My beast always made me cry with this song, and I would always cry backstage and feel like a jerk as Belle for not understanding the beast at this point in the play.
my school is doing this musical, and I'm in the pit so I just came back from the ten hour tech day. in my school, so many of the leads are people of color - Belle and the Beast, Lumiere, Mrs. Potts, Gaston, Lefou, Babette. I think it helps that my school is so diverse, and it's just nice to me that the lead of the show looks like someone I could see myself in as a little kid. but yeah, seeing your comment just reminded me of that thought I had earlier today
The first time I listened to this I was taken aback by the "No spirit could win me" part. Part of it was I didn't expect a song for The Beast to go up so high, part of it was that...damn, that's some seriously good singing.
I may be remembering wrong, but I think at one point Erik(the Phantom) was thinking in thoughts similar to this song...particularly near the end of the book.
I love the absolute contrast of this and its reprise! Adam here makes a declaration, that if he cannot love her then the world would be meaningless and nothing else would matter. Even if you hear such a sad and almost suicidal theme, you still hear the triumph in the music. Adam knows he loves her, his love is redemptory. He feels like reborn with his new emotion and even though he declares death he is happy like a sick person receiving treatment for their illness. He has her there he does love her. Reprise is totally different. He has let her go, she no longer is there and he thinks that the way she rushed away without any words of return, he fears as always that she would never love him and her going away confirms his fears at that moment. He realizes the other part of his curse cannot be fulfilled, that SHE cannot love him and that he was a fool thinking she would. The song is slowly dying out. Unlike the final note here, the reprise dies out as his fear becomes in reality and just like Adam, the reprise slowly dies out and the "let the world be done with me" becomes a reality and even a wish. Adam now welcomes death because she cannot love him and she is not there for him to love her. Of course he is proven wrong in the end
Here’s my take on what you said, if the song would have been played during the moment in The Enchanted Christmas when Beast finds the present Belle left for him before he can destroy the rose, realizing his mistake, it would have been a good way to bring the song into the original movie’s timeline.
@@dillonwright13 Hmm interesting take. I do not agree though. I think the song did fit to the musical where it was placed. In the moment you mention I think a song of this type is not necessary or it should be something that mentions his delimma rather than determination like this version does. But it is an interesting opinion
@@katerinaaqu I took a look at the scene, played two songs with it, If I Can't Love Her felt out of place, but the demo version of Days in the Sun felt more fitting, because that song shows sorrow and regret for the way he used to be, and the way he still was, while If I Can't Love Her shows sorrow and regret for what happened in the scene it was in. In all fairness, I think people may have unfairly graded The Enchanted Christmas, it was certainly better than Belle's Magical World, and somehow that had a higher score than The Enchanted Christmas. I mean, The Enchanted Christmas gave us more context on what happened the night Adam was transformed into the Beast, it showed that the curse must have slowed everyone in the castle's aging down by half (considering Chip looked 5 when Adam was cursed, probably at 16), though it was made prior to the decision to re-add Human Again to the movie, which made the Beast being able to read the book a bit out of place without moving the scene where Belle teaches the Beast to read somewhere before The Enchanted Christmas, it would have made more sense if Beast wore a purple version of his ballroom outfit while he was waiting for Belle (I mean, he had a green version, plus 3 different versions of his cape, so having him wear the ballroom outfit takes away its effectiveness), the song Cut Above the Rest would have been better played sometime before Belle went to find a tree for the Beast, and it made a reference to "A Charlie Brown Christmas", those were my only problems with The Enchanted Christmas. As for Belle's Magical World, it feels like it was made before The Enchanted Christmas got the green light, and the stories within it feel like they should've taken place before The Enchanted Christmas.
yeah.... I mean Evermore was a perfectly fine song, and the new movie wasn't terrible, but I don't get why they made new songs when they could've done the stage version.
This song could be perfect for Erik (the phantom of the opera) too and songs like this just make me want to give them both a big hug and let them know that someone is there for them
So disappointed this wasn't in the movie. The one that he sang in its place didn't even come close to the caliber of this song. I missed it so much. This one and Home. Also Gaston's song wasn't in it. Disappointing. That's why I'm here right now. Just to hear the original Broadway cast. I saw the show on Broadway three times the year it came out in 1994. I told everyone how wonderful it was, so so many people went to NYC to see it. A great year. The original Broadway cast did such a great job. When I saw it, I said GASTON LIVES! That guy was great! The movie Gaston was okay, but this Broadway Gaston was superb. All of them were.
This song makes me so incredibly sad, but the character development is amazing, and his voice is so fantastic!! I would love to perform this song one day, even if I am a girl :)
I was the Beast in a recent production a few days ago, and I was absolutely honored to sing this song. I'm still plucking the leftover Spirit Gum from my face. So worth it.10/10 would do again.
Oh my the oboe right at 2:00 pierces my band nerd heart. Maybe it's just me loving my own instrument but oboe is so perfect at expressing the emotion of this song especially.
I remember singing this for my high school play auditions when we were doing Beauty and the Beast over 5 years ago. And I remembered every time I sang that song, I was moved with the lyrics and piano that played with it. And I teared up before the ‘if I can’t love her then who?’ part. And it end up being soo good, that my director cried on my audition for the Beast. And it would go out to be and I quote from my old director ‘The best high school play I’ve ever produced in my life’. Many good memories from that play, which I can always look back and say, ‘I did that’.
Terrence Mann is the best Beast and he shows so much emotion. I still can't believe he was Frank 'N' Furter and in Addams Family, this is in my opinion his best role I've seen him in
You know... After listening to this and Evermore, I really understand why they wrote a new song. This is a VERY theater song. The entire make up of the song was clearly written for performance on a stage. I actually get a pretty strong Phantom of the Opera vibe from it. So it makes sense for them to write a song more meant for a theatrical presence.
I completely agree! I love both songs, but Evermore fits a more mature Beast, and the place it comes in just makes sense for a film. I do however HATE that the Live Action doesn't even show Beast's remorse for scaring Belle out of the castle. The musical gives us an entire song about that regret, and how awful he feels, the cartoon shows us a brief moment of him chastising himself, but the live action just cuts away, giving us nothing until he comes to save her. It was so disappointing.
I had the honor of playing Beast in Beauty and the Beast. I'm sad that after hearing this song I didn't cry when I watched the musical. When I saw the live action movie, I balled my eyes out at Evermore. I don't know why but Evermore to me is more impactful. It's just my opinion. But I really love this song and I would love to hear Dan Stevens sing it. Maybe then I'd cry? I don't know but I do hope that someday, when I see someone play Beast, that I'll ball my eyes out at this song.
@@MarianaGarciaGrijalva I was so excited watching the movie bc the intro to evermore sounds like this song so I was like OMG THEY PUT IT IN THE MO-...this ...this isn't the same song... *pouts* *rewinds the movie and actually listens to the words*...Hm... Fine... I love this one too.. xD
km valentine I don't think it was written for the movie at the time the movie came out, it was written specifically for the Broadway show........it's a gorgeous song!
Adam King Actually none of the stage songs are in the live action version. Rather than this they are having the beast sing the song "Evermore" which I think doesn't really compare to this song.
I think Evermore actually sounded very similar to this song and it kinda felt like they were just writing a different version of this song. Evermore was good but to me it felt like they were kinda rewriting the same song to be eligible for an Oscar.
I worked tech on this musical in high school. To this day I’ve never heard anyone sing this better than our actor for Beast. Teared up every single rehearsal and every single show. Oh how I wish I could hear it again. The actor’s name was Tino Zapata.
I just got cast as Beast in my local theatre's production of B&B. First few rehearsals have been a blast!! This is such a beautiful song and it is so much fun to sing. I'm very excited for this show. It's the second show I've ever done, and the second lead I've gotten and I am quite proud of myself.
I was fortunate enough to see this live. Not in New York, but Oklahoma City. It was magnificent and truly a wonder to behold. I was also very young around the age of seven.
my high school did this musical last year. one of my friends was the beast and he absolutely loved this song and did it sooo amazingly. he was so talented but he graduated in the spring-- miss you isaac!
I was able to be the keyboard harp for this musical two time now. This is by-far my favorite song of the soundtrack; especially at 2:43. Chills all around. This soundtrack is god-like compared to the movie version.
We did Beauty and the Beast this year, and I played violin in Pit Orchestra. This was by far my favorite song of the show and our Beast would make me cry every time he sang it. He worked so hard on it and I am so proud of him!
I personally love the score (one of the hardest that we have performed) and we found this playlist to be VERY helpful to us to get an idea of what the singers are doing and our particular instruments, so thanks for posting this :)
Kyle Vanwinkler break a leg and have fun!!!! It's a great roll and I'm sure you would do great!!! Just remember "Acting is one side of a person. Look for all the sides of a person on and off stage"
En mi deforme faz, ni un rastro queda ya de lo que un día pudo ser ternura. Tengo un aspecto cruel, no puedo huir de él. Hay luz, mas no consigo verla nunca. Sólo, olvidado, como el tiempo que pasó de largo. Sigo despreciado, condenado, nunca perdonado.
A couple months ago my school did Beauty and the Beast as our spring musical where I was originally cast to play Cogsworth but then 2 months into rehearsal our Beast had to drop out which led to me taking over the role and one of my good friends who was in the ensemble taking over my part so during next the month I learned part of The Beast and during that time I was nervous because it was the first time being a replacement and it was my first time playing the lead role but thanks to the amazing support from my friends and cast mates I was able to get through and it became my favorite role and show I've been in and this song was definitely my favorite song to learn and perform. ❤🌹🥀

Beast:
And in my twisted face
There's not the slightest trace
Of anything that even hints of kindness
And from my tortured shape
No comfort, no escape
I see, but deep within is utter blindness
Hopeless
As my dream dies
As the time flies
Love a lost illusion
Helpless
Unforgiven
Cold and driven
To this sad conclusion
No beauty could move me
No goodness improve me
No power on earth, if I can't love her
No passion could reach me
No lesson could teach me
How I could have loved her and make her love me too
If I can't love her, then who?
Long ago I should have seen
All the things I could have been
Careless and unthinking, I moved onward
No pain could be deeper
No life could be cheaper
No point anymore, if I can't love her
No spirit could win me
No hope left within me
Hope I could have loved her and that she'd set me free
But it's not to be
If I can't love her
Let the world be done with me.

And it end up being soo good, that my director cried on my audition for the Beast. And it would go out to be and I quote from my old director ‘The best high school play I’ve ever produced in my life’. Many good memories from that play, which I can always look back and say, ‘I did that’.
And in my twisted face
There's not the slightest trace
dadada something something GALAVANT
Thank you. I'm glad i'm not the only one who hears this.
Yes!
Hahaha both by Alan Menken, so it's not surprising!
The Evermore before Evermore
Terrence Mann is the best Beast and he shows so much emotion. I still can't believe he was Frank 'N' Furter and in Addams Family, this is in my opinion his best role I've seen him in
I'm so in love with his voice!! Powerful, riveting, and soothing! Very handsome (played this track too much at my learning center XD
If I Can't Love Her>Evermore.
They're both beautiful, both composed by Alan Menken himself, if I remember correctly.
Fine... I love this one too.. xD
Both are beautiful, but this one makes a lot more sense.
I absolutely ADORE Evermore, but this song moves me to tears every time.
BAAAAAAH that key change is amazing.
Easily top five best songs ever written for a male coice. It gives me the same chills as memory from cats. I wish it was in the film
Better then any of the new songs on BATB 2017, this made me cry so much at the show
I had hoped they would have put this song in the live action version
This song >>>>>evermore
As good as "Evermore" was in the newest movie, this song still gives me chills every time I hear it!
2:24 My Favorite Part
Terrence Mann and Susan Egan are the best together! They totally rocked this show!
This song makes me feel some type of way 😭😭😭
2:20 this song is from East Wing, which was pulled from Saint Saëns Aquarium. Look into that song. It is beautiful
As of 6/2/2016, Gaston has made 23 accounts and down voted this song.....
Christian Ostermeier as of 11/1/16 it is now 35. Damn that Gaston. No one dislikes like Gaston.
Haha! I guess he did survive that fall!
How did u know that?
90
Gaston had a fairly decent year in 2017 getting his crew to dislike this song from 35 to 90!
I love this so much. Such a shame it wasn't in the movie.
km valentine I don't think it was written for the movie at the time the movie came out, it was written specifically for the Broadway show........it's a gorgeous song!
Adam King Actually none of the stage songs are in the live action version. Rather than this they are having the beast sing the song "Evermore" which I think doesn't really compare to this song.
just out of curiosity what did you not like about evermore? i thought it was an absolutely phenomenal song!
which part of "evermore" did you not like? Im completely biased to it because it made me ugly cry XD but I am curious about why you didn't like it.
I think Evermore actually sounded very similar to this song and it kinda felt like they were just writing a different version of this song. Evermore was good but to me it felt like they were kinda rewriting the same song to be eligible for an Oscar.
Love this song so much. Can't stop listening to it.
Absolutely breathtaking. All of the Beast's solos deserve to be in the the movie, and all of them deserve all of the credit.
I'm really and sad that this and home weren't sung in the live action movie. But I'm happy that they incorporated both of them instrumentally
I worked tech on this musical in high school. To this day I’ve never heard anyone sing this better than our actor for Beast. Teared up every single rehearsal and every single show. Oh how I wish I could hear it again. The actor’s name was Tino Zapata.
I just saw the play a week ago in person it is phenomenal. This song brought tears to my eyes.
2:22 thats why i like this song, wish that revised intro was longer
My school is preforming this and oh I get chills when I'm in pit orchestra rehearsal! Especially during those parts
I just got cast as Beast in my local theatre's production of B&B. First few rehearsals have been a blast!! This is such a beautiful song and it is so much fun to sing. I'm very excited for this show. It's the second show I've ever done, and the second lead I've gotten and I am quite proud of myself.
this beats evermore in my opinion
I was fortunate enough to see this live. Not in New York, but Oklahoma City. It was magnificent and truly a wonder to behold. I was also very young around the age of seven.
the freaking horn glissando makes me hyped every time
Can't wait for March, when my school's production of this show opens! I was fortunate enough to be cast as the Beast! I'm so excited :D
I am too bro
Hsmtmts season 2 episode 8 2021 anyone? 😅
As someone who is going to be playing the beast, I have massive respect for his vocals in this song
I love this song so much! It's my favourite out of the whole soundtrack!
This is by far my favorite-the person playing beast while I'm in ensemble is magnificent
I love this song and movie. Especially the Broadway version. Very powerful
me too i love both of them as well
Best song in the soundtrack! Or at least one of the tops. So sad this wasn’t in the movies!
my high school did this musical last year. one of my friends was the beast and he absolutely loved this song and did it sooo amazingly. he was so talented but he graduated in the spring-- miss you isaac!
I was able to be the keyboard harp for this musical two time now. This is by-far my favorite song of the soundtrack; especially at 2:43. Chills all around. This soundtrack is god-like compared to the movie version.
I love this song soooooo much!!!!
I love all of the beats solos. So so so very beautiful
... About a hero known as Gaaaaalavant!
You have discovered something dark and powerful and I don't care for it.
Such a great experience to play The Beast and perform this great song. Good luck to any and all future Beasts out there
I love the song. It touches my heart.
We did Beauty and the Beast this year, and I played violin in Pit Orchestra. This was by far my favorite song of the show and our Beast would make me cry every time he sang it. He worked so hard on it and I am so proud of him!
Evermore should be added to the Broadway show, and If I Can't Love Her should be kept as well.
Thanks for uploading!
I watch this broadway musical it was the most amazing experience I could ever have I wish I could watch it again
Absolutely brilliant!
I personally love the score (one of the hardest that we have performed) and we found this playlist to be VERY helpful to us to get an idea of what the singers are doing and our particular instruments, so thanks for posting this :)
Evermore was a good song, but I really wish they'd used this one. It's so sad. It really makes you feel the Beast's desperation and pain.
This is amazing!
Beautiful!
This is a way better song than Everymore.
WHY did they leave this song out of the movie? I play this song over and over when I play the CD!
Favorite song from the Broadway soundtrack. I also loved Evermore in the live action film.
Had to sing this for production last year. Absolutely loved it!
This song gives me tears... I just did this show and this song was one of my favorites!
i am going to be the beast for our school's rendition of this musical and i am so pumped to sing this song and the others involved
Kyle Vanwinkler break a leg!
Kyle Vanwinkler break a leg and have fun!!!! It's a great roll and I'm sure you would do great!!! Just remember "Acting is one side of a person. Look for all the sides of a person on and off stage"
Thank you for the great words @tim wilkins and to you @principessa101
Lol same, I was the only to try out for beast :p
007smoshassaisansper I was not the only one to do it but I was the best fit out of the others
I love this song sooooo much!!!!! I love the movie, but this is my favorite song from the stage musical.:)
Honestly, this is probably one of the best songs in the history of Broadway.
Sigo despreciado,
condenado, nunca perdonado.
No existe belleza, no queda grandeza
No queda esperanza, no llego a alcanzarla
si no es su amor el que me libere al fin.
Ya que es así y no puedo amar...
¡que el mundo esté sin mí!
I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!
This is gorgeous~
This song is amazing😍
My school is doing this production (I’m in the crew though) But every time our Beast sings this I cry. This song is just so amazing and emotional
