"America ist wunderbar" - sarcasm as it finest
You´re so right
"We're all living in Amerika, Coca Cola, sometimes war" quite deep line
Nice, thanks for that note.
This is actually one song I think the music video is better than the live performance.
The music video doesn't leave out lyrics and gives more context to what the song is about.
For example some of the missing lyrics are about how bands are expected to sing in English if they want a bigger audience. Something they no doubt have been pressured on and mostly resisted.
This live version is a bit cut down, but still very good. And all their songs have really deep lyrics, it's what makes Rammstein truly great...
@@MrZnarffy Some of their songs have deep meanings. Many of them are actually pretty messed up to. Not a bad thing at all but think they enjoy those because they know they have a large fan base that doesn't speak German so it's a bit of fun getting those fans to sing along with lyrics that are disturbing when many don't know it is.
They have a great sense of humor about a lot of stuff and that comes out in not only the more obvious humor but in stuff like what I pointed out about some of their songs being about taboo topics.
Du Hast is a great example they released a English version which they intentionally translated wrong and many people still think it is a proper translation. It isn't and that was intentional on their part. Du Hast actual mean You Have but in there prank translation it is You Hate. So now many people think the song is about something very different than it is because they missed the joke.
Rammstein crowds always sound ready to siege the gates of gondor or rohan, i love it!
Till would for sure have been leading the barbarian hoards of east Germany against the Roman Empire…I always imagine the roar of the crowd emerging from the Forrest before storming the battlefield
"This is not a love song", all said.
Most people know what the USA is doing arround the world it is not peace and freedome it is to slave the world for some companies and one thing i dont hate the US people but what the deep state is doing or i calling shadow gouverment is really bad and i hope there is a good outside!
This song is NOT PRO USA...more the opposite :D and nearly nobody from the us gets it :D
Just like Bruce Springsteens Born n the usa is then
Germany has set such a good example for the world to follow, though, ya?
@@zilvertron pretty the same,it seems you just need to have amerika or usa in the song and it must be a pro song... :D
I think most people in America get it.If people don't understand the the rest of the world is not always happy with the way or country might effect there lives you would have to be stupid.
@@mbsnyderc We do. Americans are NOT their government and don't always agree with its policies. This is true of most countries.
1. Verse:
If theres dance I want to lead you
Even if you spin alone
Let yourself be controlled a little
I'll show you how to do it right
We form a dear circle(Reigen is a very outdated german word for like a circle dance)
Freedom plays on all violins
Theres music coming from the white house
And in front of Paris stands Mickey Mouse
2. Verse :
I know steps that are of good use
And I will protect you from missteps
And who does not want to dance in the end
Doesn't know yet that he has to (dance)
We form a dear circle
I'll show you the direction
To Africa comes Santa Claus
And in front of Paris stands Mickey Mouse
That's a literal translation from the german Verses for all the English viewers interested.
Schwertfisch13 came to do the same couldnt have done it better. Sehr schön :)
Thanks
I just wanted to add the meaning of the music from the white house line. Theres a german saying ‘hier spielt die musik’, engl. ‘this is where the music plays’ which basically means ‘this is the most important right now, pay attention’.
When he says the music plays from the white house he is saying that the white house dictates whats important to the whole world.
And the whole dance lines probably come from ‚nach ______ Pfeife tanzen‘ engl. ‚to dance to someones whistle‘. In german that means doing everything they say.
Plus the violine might come from satans fiddle. But the last ones not for sure.
The American completely misses the point of the song criticising America. There's a shocker!
i though it was a love song
@L M Clearly you don't live here. We are regulated to death, and yeah, we're tired of our government sticking its nose in other countries' business. You people who come from countries who were once a pure stock... America has NEVER been ONE race or ONE ethnicity. We ARE German, English, Italian, Chinese, Mexican, Spanish, African, Russian, French, et al. If you don't like Amerika, stay the fuck home.
It is not a specific critique.
@@forkittens Loving America? ROTFL

Rammstein is all about sarcasm, ironic lyrics and the truth disguised in powerful music!!
That's why I love them!!!❤️
“Rammschtein” not “Rammstine”
And “Amerika” is how they spell America in German. Plus the album was released in 2004 so it has zero bearing on our current president. It’s directed towards America as a whole.
Thank you.
Let's put it that way: The present POTUS makes the song more actual than ever...reality reaches the stereotype...

"Reality reaches the stereotype"!

@@teardrop-in-a-fishbowl no sir. Link?
“Amerika” is, according to the band, a satirical commentary on Americanization and the misconceptions foreigners, as well as some Americans, have about the American utopia.
It's not a love song. Many people miss that. Many others miss that it's also not a hate song.
@@CollaredDom It's not a hate song, because it does not tell you to hate, just describes the ugly truth...
I am a 59 year old mum from Australia who absolutely LOVES Rammstein and have for years. My birthday present from my son, who got into them at high school, was their latest album with Deutschland which I have pumping in the car so loud that the windows vibrate. From what I could gather, the song is about the commercial crap that has emanated from the US and affected the rest of the world. The missing line "This is not a love song" is telling at this concert, it's not a love song about the U.S.
Deutschland (Germany) from Rammstein is about our 2000 year old past. All the bad things happened from Roman empire, Church, burning of "witches", 3 big wars, the misery and guilt, Holocaust, terrorism in the 60s/70s. And the way many Germans feel about their own country. Not many patriots here. It is a love - hate relation with the motherland. The music video is pretty graphic but a masterpiece of history.
@@suesun7072 Love that song too!
I think the term "cultural imperialism" pretty much sums up the meaning of this song
Oh, not only cultural. The cultural imperialism is simply a side effect of the actual imperialism coming with the US army and its bombs and also economical warfare all over the planet.
“Und wer nicht tanzen will am Schluss, der weiß nicht, dass er tanzen muss.” - Deep and true.
Leider
Interesting. They left out part of the song where he sings in English "This is not a love song, this is not a love song, I don't speak my mother tongue, this is not a love song". I wonder if they were trying to tone it down for this set.
I've always interpreted it as that they are in Germany and playing in front of their fans. So they don't have to sing that part. Everyone understands it anyway.
I'm not sure but as far as I know this part is never sung in live shows. But yes, real fans like me know and understand it😉
@@sandrasaadi1718 They sing it in the Paris concert that they released on DVD. That's why I was wondering why the difference.
@@markfry4304 Ah okay, thank you. I still didn't watch this completely.

America is really fascinating place to visit as a European, i have travelled west & east coast US. Cultural hegemony of US is pervasive in Europe so its like going to Europe but everything is 100x bigger, but then on the dark side it feels like 3rd world country when you drive past miles of trailer parks and thousands of homeless people.
Guess you haven't been to Russia where people die from STDs. US does have some problems, but at least it's way better than those poor Post Soviet countries
@@caim3465 those countries aren't the biggest economy of the globe that should be able to help everyone living within her borders though...
@@caim3465 I have only seen in Brazil or other similar places where one side of the river is million dollar suburb homes & other side is worse than ghetto trailer parks. My country provides free housing/healthcare/food for every citizen, so its a quite a shock.
To be fair they would just die because of the cold if we didn't but still :D
The places with the most homelessness are ran by leaders who are copying continental european political practices. I.E massive welfare state and globalism .
@@entiresquare6262 it isnt free the massive welfare is paid by people who work for a living to support the people who make bad life decisions with little deterent to do otherwise. Guess what this perpetual feedback loop ends societies and destroys economies. Not sustainable.
"Und wer nicht tanzen will am Schluß, der weiß noch nicht das er tanzen muss" --> "And if you don't want to dance at the end, you still don't know that you have to dance"
Easy to understand. America say jump and the rest of the world should reply with "how high".
Get out off your chair and see them live! It is a wonderful experience! I brought with me a friend who really did not like this "heavy stuff".
Guess who walked home after the concert wearing a Rammstein T-shirt and a pink umbrella singing Rammstein songs?
The audience are wonderful, the atmosphere is perfect, and you get a theatrical performance with more than all the bells and Whistels...
I waited till the end but unfortunately You didn’t get the actual message....
„It‘s not a love song" and this was way before that guy who is making everything “great again” 🤪

"This is not a love song, I don't sing my mother tongue"
The documentary 'Rammstein in Amerika' is superb. It traces the band's origins, their ascent in the US thanks to 'Du Hast', then abandoning the US completely for nearly a decade before coming back for the MSG show.
I don' t care if you do rammstein for a whole year in a row , I love this guys , have my like sir
"Amerika" is German for America. In German Amerika usually refers to the USA and not continental America. The song is not so much about politics per se but rather about the social and cultural influence of the "brand America" and how much the USA imprinted their way of life on the world, thus the chorus: we all living in Amerika and so on.
I grew up in West Germany which was occupied by the western Allied Forces post World War II and for us Amerika was omni present through music, Hollywood movies, TV and every day life products like Coca Cola. So, growing up in the 80ies virtually right next to the "Iron Curtain" Amerika was somewhat of distant dream for young people. The land of the free, where cars can talk and crack commando units bring justice to the common people without killing anyone ever.
Now imagine how that must have felt to Germans who lived on the other side of the curtain until the wall came down in 1990. Being exposed to all that at once must have felt bizarre to say the least. That's what happened to band members of Rammstein, giving them a unique perspective on the American way of life. And that is what the song is all about. It doesn't damn the USA, but it isn't a love song either.
Perfekter Kommentar! Kann ich mich nur anschliessen. Bin Jahrgang '80 und ebenfalls in Westdeutschland aufgewachsen. Und mit den "Commando Units" meinst du wohl das A-Team...
as a german who is also from the 80s i might to differ as i feel its way more america critic, also amerika for me always was the continent never the usa xD its quite risky if you see you and people you know and think all germany is that way :)
Dear @@DaxRaider, I think there might be a misunderstanding. I did not say it is not critical - I just think the criticism is less political but more about social and cultural influence (which of course does not exclude political criticism). I am sorry if I offended by saying "America usually refers to the USA", but that's why I used "usually" and since Rammstein refers to the USA in this song by Amerika I think I am not too far off with that remark. Furthermore, terms like "amerikanischer Präsident" are even used in news speech which makes them part of the common vernacular in German. Not sharing the same opinion with someone, does not make the other one necessarily presumptuous.
Everything I write is at the end of the day my personal view of things usually based on knowledge I regard as factual. That does not make me infallible, but I refuse to have my opinion labeled as "risky" in this matter. Nevertheless, I appreciate your opinion and I do understand where you are coming from.
@@praefectusvigilum6997 yes, the A-Team :D
Interviews of Rammstien I get the feeling they are still leftists anti imperialist and pro labor.

I actually prefer the official music video for this particular song because the video itself kind of helps you keep up with what they're saying and trying to get across.
Being from Iceland, like your artwork in the background. People in america go to concerts for social media, everybody has their phone in the air while you can hardly see any on Rammstein concerts. That explains the difference in energy you talked about. People are there for the music and their extreme energy.
Thanks for the comment. Also, my wife and I LOVE Iceland, greatest place we have ever been.
I've been lucky once. I was at their concert here in Oslo in Norway way way back when. I think it was in 2004. I was standing far away from the plattform, but holy hell I felt the heat from his flamethrower:))))))
Mein Herz Brennt please. Keep the Rammstein train going. This is awesome.
This live show is one of the minor incredible ones - check out Rammstein Paris (Mutter, Du Hast ...), European Tour (newest, too crazy show) or New York (Ich tu dir weh ...). Keep it up.
Yeah, there are many performances for other songs way crazier than this one. Of course, it's still Rammstein and their shows are always massive and bombastic nonetheless ^^
Are you sure there will be a revolution if that happend? I don't thinks so. If the politicans and the media will "explain" it to the people the right way, most of them will accept it. At least there will made a law that bread is against the clima then it will be replaced by delightful insects.

This song is about how America, while undeniably having a huge impact in the worlds culture with brilliant marketing / propaganda - is basically a worldwide kind of bully who must always impose their will, view and intervene in everyone else's affairs, for their own (corporate) interests...
If you don’t behave, we will get our powerful army to “bring democracy to your country” and our corporations will take over your natural wealth.
Look at the Amerika's official video.
Americas cultural influence- Coca Cola, Burger King, Nike, Asian Rockabilly, etc., Middle Eastern taking off his Nike shoes to bow and pray to the oil...
Just watch official video and think about lyrics - Coca Cola (artificial drink), wonderbra (fake breasts), etc. but everything wrapped up in sparkly, shiny marketing that appeals to consumeristic masses... And First Nations people dance... Who were victims of undeniable genocide in North America.
Rammstein is clearly 'unhappy' with American hegemony into other cultures and societies, which has spread with economic and military interventions for over the past 70 years.
Look at the Amerika's video again.
At the end, you see it is a made up video, and “they are on the Moon”... This implies to recent doubts expressed by other countries whether US ever landed on the Moon as new suspicious details of landing video were discovered.... Or was it only again, just a brilliant propaganda?...
The song and video are so intelligently loaded with multiple layers...
Last year’s Rammstein song & video “Deutschland” gives introspective into German crimes and flaws through the history.
More Rammstein please :) Loving your reactions ! Both music and live clips are worth reacting. As for music videos i recommend "Mein Teil" or "Deutschland" next.

Welcome to the world of Rammstein. Saw the concert this summer. Awesome.

Rammstein are one of the best bands to see live. My husband and I have been fans since 2003 and have seen them countless times in concert and at festivals, do try to see them if you can, you will be so glad that you did, it is an experience! :D
Another band to see live is Muse, we first saw them in Germany in 2004 and have been fans ever since.
"This is not the love song" - Exactly. This song is about the huge influence of America to other countries and its cultures. E.G. the Halloween. In our country we were never celebrating this one. But it is just so much popularized, so the people celebrate this. The local traditions and holidays are dying here in the shadow of the US ones (I know, the Halloween is not originally the US celebration, but the US made it popular and changed its meaning a bit...bit more.) We have the celebration called: "All Souls' Day". In this day the people goes to the graveyards to to honor the memory of the deceased. Nothing like "trick or treat". Just nice, decent and humble event.
Love your reactions and emotions with this band

It's called "The Golden Rule"
He who has all the gold. Makes the rules. Every other country in the world. Makes stuff to sell in America. For good or bad. That's the way of the world. For now.
Great explanation, thanks for the note.
I was in the crowd at this performance. It was so fucking amazing. I always get goose bump when I watch this.
After watching Triple X the movie and seeing them playing what could very well be an actual live set has made me want to see them live.
This song resonates with Europeans even more, because there is a cultural saying to it as well. Now it's not used anymore almost at all, but the saying "it's America" or "it will be America" means that something is or will be amazing. The term simply isn't being used anymore, because people see that the US simply isn't the ideal that it used to represent.
There is a verse in another version were he sings "this is not a love song, I don't speak my mothers tongue". He sees his German culture like many other cultures diluted by the American marketing machine. I think even in America those who are more cognizant of the constant selling of stuff and how it does not make people happy might agree with this idea or thought. Especially as Americans travel to other countries to only to be disappointed by the Americanization of other cultures. Great band that I will be seeing in concert in Sept. in San Antonio Texas!
Hitting the nail on the head ^^ I wonder how many people missed the satirical/critical part of the song.
I'll see them sep 3rd in Chicago,,,, have fun my man
Rammstein is touring the United States this year. I would jump on it if you can, they rarely ever hope the pond.
The original song is Living in America by the Sounds. Rammstein singer Lindemann call the singer Maja Ivarsson in the Sounds and ask for permission to take stuff from their song Living in America into this song.
That what she said in a interview in swedish televison.

I learned the new album in one sitting on guitar love these guys
I come from the Netherlands and I am 60 years old. I love rammsteins songs. This because they came from the DDR and western Germany. They experienced a lot. Their songs are always political and about life. Their last album Zeit is a very good Album. If we talk about Amerika or Russia. You can not dictate democratie. Russia and China are not democraties and never will be. We in Europe make that same mistake. All the wars we have to stop. We have to love each other.
Fun fact.. Slovenian band Laibach (German for Ljubljana our capitol) inspired Rammstein and they also have a song named America.
Don't misundertand me, I have friends online from the USA. awesome people, I'm latin but speak American English... but politically USA is like the Roman Empire, looking the rest of the world over the shoulder. Even having contributed to general science knowledge, Amerika behaves like the big bully in every sense possible. Trump is the tumor, the expression of all that buried things coming up the surface. Rammstein did this song aftyer Till and Flake got arrested for a performance in a city I don't remember by now. They realised Amerika was the land of freedom just for some, not for all. It was a devastating blow for people that survived Eastern Germany, Flake just dropped the concert tour and returned to Germany and they almost disbanded. Great and honest video, thanks for sharing. Be happy America is in charge right now. Your other options would be China or Russia.
@@gg_ingy At least Americans support something like democracy, you are right, the others you mention are openly authoritarian.

Even there is finally a line with "this is not a Love song" some ppl dont get it xD
it's rather sarcastic. You should do Deutshland, that is polical
Bart Leekens it's not dude
Sarcasm means saying something that you dont really mean. Thats absolutely not the case here. They mean everything they say, but they present it in a mostly ironic way.
"Und wer nicht tanzen will am Schluss, weiß noch nicht dass er tanzen muss" is not sarcasm. Rammstein is a left wing and very much liberal band. Songs like "Mann gegen Mann" ('Man against man') are making fun of the tradition of war, where men are fighting each other, but as soon as they fight in bed, it is considered "disgusting" by a lot of people. "Ausländer" is a criticism of colonializm. "Links, 2,3,4" is literally their proof. "They want my heart to be at the 'right' place, but once i look down it beats 'left'."
in my mind Deutschland is more a history lesson, than a political statement.
