I pretty much cry every time. I'm 58, disabled, from Spfld, Mass! Great cover, best I've ever heard. Evanescence's cover of Goin' to California is close but not out of nature for Ev. My husband loved this version of the song, he loved the original but absolutely loved this one. I had it played at his funeral along with Garth Brooks The Dance when he died suddenly at age 46 in 2018. I still cry when I hear either song but they are good tears, good memories of him and our 27 years together.
I've seen Paul Simon in concert sing The Sound of Silence. Brought tears to my eyes. And I went and saw Disturbed and listened to their version of Sound of Silence, it shook me to my core
The first time I heard The Sound of Silence by Disturbed I was affected for at least an hour. In my mind I imagine being one of the citizens of Germany during the Nazi regime during the time when their music was being stolen and people were literally being "silenced." I was shaking with rage and pain: the unfairness of it all, the need to speak up against injustice in all it's forms. This song brings tears to my eyes and electricity to my spine every time I hear it. I absolutely can't stop listening to Draiman's powerful, magical voice. To me it gives a voice to those who were and still are silenced by oppression and tyranny.
I read a post elsewhere on RUclips about this version that really resonated with me. Simon and Garfunkel's version was a warning if people don't change. Disturbed's version expresses rage that we've ignored the warning.
Finally somebody smart enough not deposit during the reaction thank you you have to listen to it all the way through before you talk about it well done
I agree that it turned out great. But the backstory is that Paul Simon used to write songs in a dark bathroom. One day he turned off the light and said, hello darkness, my old friend, and the rest is history.
When this song came out, it really changed how I felt about it. The power and darkness they were able to put into it, completely changed the lyrical meaning for me. Being a Marine combat vet, I perceive the lyrics differently than most. "Hello darkness my old friend"... "In restless dreams I walked alone"... Each person can percieve lyrics differently. This is a very emotional song for many people. Thanks for the reaction!
I am not a veteran, but a friend to several and I understand that this would resonate differently with you. I just wish to say a deeply heartfelt thank you, for your service and sacrifice. God bless you and yours.
I was scrolling the comments to figure out the original intent cause every time I hear this version it speaks more to me. I tried listening to the original performers version to see if I could grasp the intent. I value your input cause it does seem open to interpretation to me & seems to have so many levels. Now I'm not going to question anymore & just allow it to capture me up & speak to me rather than being stuck to one idea or original intent of the song. I pray as you listen it heals & helps you to a place of comfort & more. Thank you.
June O'Connor Gotta agree with you ! It reminds me of Johnny Cash's version of Hurt. Kinda cool how someone can take a song and totally make it their own and put a different kind of meaning to it.
@@christineschmidt8494 wow, that Cover was very different from others too, in that : "hurt" was covered by the elder artist from Trent's version -- being very counter intuitive from almost any other cover song. It's great how you brought it up!

One of the few versions of any song that brings a tear to my eye just from the emotion in the performance. The most amazing and probably crowning moment of Disturbed’s body of work.
It’s a cool cover song done by disturbed and this version gave me chills down my spine and goosebumps. The way he looks at you like he’s piercing though your eyes and looking into one’s soul. He’s has a beautiful voice from low to high voice and awesome rasp in his voice as well. I don’t usually listen to heavy metal bands especially hard core heavy metal but this song proves he can sing any type of music, opera, rock, jazz, blues, country or even on country music.
I am 70 years old and think this is the best version of the song ever since and other than Simon and Garfunkel's came out with it. S&G's version is haunting and unforgettable. This one is almost ethereal and also unforgettable.
Hello darkness my old friend, was probably written as he loved writing and composing songs in his Bathroom with the lights out. It became a friend to him where he was most comfortable. TOTALLY AWESOME!!! This is something your daughter will always cherish, value, and remember, as such a special time shared with her dad! Especially partaking in something as meaningful as bringing the art of music into her life and you both sharing you feelings about what you both experienced together! As for the reaction,,, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU, for not pausing it!! OOHHH I HATE THAT! Like you said, you had to let it flow to enjoy it all! I believe when you pause a song, you take so much out of it! It robs you of the building feeling to what could be a moving crescendo or hairs on your arm raising experience if you pause it just at that pivotal moment! Dad! I could tell in your facial expression throughout the whole song that you really enjoy this version/song!! I didn't get so much expression from your daughter during, so I wasn't sure,, but it was a privilege to be able to hear her truthful feelings of the song, as she appears to be a well raised, educated young lady from obviously a loving family!! Refreshing to see on such a social media type world where everything goes anymore! You both have a great chemistry! Thank you for sharing that with me,!!!!!!!!!!!
I love watching these videos - at last, a father who talks TO his children and not AT them. These kids must cherish this guy - there aren't many of his sort around!
Disturbed takes us on an emotional voyage, the power and the intensity is truly magnificent, this is the best cover ever in my humble opinion, this band proves itself worthy of this song.
I just came across your video here😊 and your daughter is beautiful! But I must admit I was smiling the whole time watching you 😻 Also, I was blown away when I first watched The Sound of Silence by Disturbed and I still am every single time I watch it! I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve watched it. As it’s absolutely incredible! Pareting gone well! i can see me and my 14 yr old daughetr doin this. her lullaby when she was a toddler was In Flames - The quiet place. today she is a hardstyle or what ever it is calles kinda girl. but she melts everytime i play her that song. Beeing a dad and transfering your music to them is truly amazing!
This is easily one of the best covers of a song ever made! Right beside Careless Whisper by Seether and Zombie by Bad Wolves. The build up in this song from soft to powerful is amazing. Your daughter looked like she got a bit emotional toward the end (which who could blame her). Beautifully haunting song!
It's funny to me that the first line makes her laugh. That first line almost always literally brings tears to my eyes. Creative expression can be taken in so many different ways I love it lol.
I hope you played *"Down With The Sickness"* for her too, to get the comparison, so she can understand what makes this song all that more amazing. (special)
I have ONE song saved to my phone and this is it. I'd always thought that Sound of Silence was one of the best songs ever written, but when I first heard it by Disturbed it literally brought tears to my eyes. Simon and Garfunklel wrote and performed a masterpiece, but then when I heard this I realized you can improve on perfection.
Although the "Hello darkness..." part is amazing, it's the next part that always get to me; "I've come to talk with you again". Not talk to, but talk with, as in the darkness respond... Scares the crap out me 😳
I’ve loved this song since first hearing it as a child in the early 70’s, I’ve searched ever since to find someone who could sing with the power that Paul Simons words deserved; at last (in ‘Disturbed’s’ version) my search has ended!!!
I completely love the S&G version, but when I heard this, watching the video the 2 of you did, it quickly became my favorite version of this song. I literally sat with my mouth open, afraid to breathe, eventually crying my eyes out. The original was the warning, this is the anger that it wasn't heeded. I think it's great that your daughter is being exposed to all types of music. Great job Dad!
Its great how you use music to connect with your kids. im learning so much from you sir, thank you. i can tell your daughter is paying more attention to the "visual" of the video rather than the music or the artistry of it. she did not connect so much to the "music" than she did to the visual. perhaps use lyric videos? she seems to try to connect to what she is seeing rather than what she is hearing/feeling. what you are doing is fantastic, and important. thank you
thank you so much for not pausing it. most people that review this videos stop it so many times. with this song you need to experience the entire song without stopping
I love this version as well. the 'hello darkness my old friend, I've come to talk to you again' is I believe, a reference to depression and despair. It then leads nicely into the rest of the song. It is why this version sounds so different to the original
"Hello darkness my old friend" is so ubiquitous on the Internet and in movies. Doubtless she's seen a ton of memes and comedies riffing off of the famous line.
I grew up with all of Simon & Garfunkels incredible songs. Sound of Silence written during the Vietnam War, was so popular in the late '60s; however, my oldest son sent me Disturbs cover & I was OMG; what a set of pipes this man has; deep voice that grabs you by the throat.
Thanks for the note, nothing worse on RUclips than a video you want to watch with terrible audio, I really try to make it as clear as possible. Thanks again.
7:15 I know why the first few words "Hello darkness my old friend" makes her laugh. The opening words of this song is often played as a humorous audio meme to represent "dying inside" lol.
I never thot anyone could top the original (and It’s one of my favorite poetic songs) BUT this version left me speechless. I wasn’t expecting what came. Paul Simon himself gave it his stamp of approval so....
If my 11 year old daughter develops that kind of taste in music, I'll be a happy man. Currently, despite playing guitar in the school rock band, she still prefers pop that's a bit on the mindless side. But hopefully as she gets a little older her tastes will mature.
This popped up on my RUclips suggestions two days ago. I watched the actual video myself the did a search for other reactions. I ended up staying awake all night watching other peoples(including all the vocal coaches) reactions. I started watching more at 1.am today and am still trawling through so thanks for getting me totally hooked. Have you thought about a reaction to the Conan LIVE version*which imho is better)?
There's a pattern in the ones she likes, because she already heard the original and it generates a goosebumps nostalgia. I got the same for these two, Zombie and Sound of Silence. Amazing voice talents, amazing ballads, amazing songs.
@@GlitchintheMatrixMultiMedia Was gonna say react to to some other Nightwish songs first, but seems you already did :) Still, I would recomend at least 1or 2 songs from the first singer era first, Tarja, since The Poet and the pendulum deals with her departure from the band and the effect that had on Tuomas, the keyboard player, who's essentially the band leader.
People must read "The pit and the pendulum" to understand the reference and the darkness of the song. The most disturbing line, to me, is "the swaying blade, my lullaby". Poe's swaying blade is scary so, how can anyone sees it as comforting?
No matter how many times I listen to this.."AND THE NEON GOD THEY MADE" makes every hair stand up and chills me to the bone.

Thanks for the kind words, on occasion I do have to pause though to help avoid copyright, but for the most part I try to limit that. Thanks again!
Wow, what a great rendition . This was a song, voice and arrangement for the soul
Check out the live version it is moving to say the least :-0
I love watching these videos - at last, a father who talks TO his children and not AT them. These kids must cherish this guy - there aren't many of his sort around!
Dave Draiman does an iconic job!!! so glad the both of you reacted to this song!!!
Thanks, I really do love this song and this version, thanks for watching.
Disturbed takes us on an emotional voyage, the power and the intensity is truly magnificent, this is the best cover ever in my humble opinion, this band proves itself worthy of this song.
It isn’t a sad song. It’s a dystopian song. And if you can laugh in a dystopia, you are ahead of the game.
I just came across your video here😊 and your daughter is beautiful! But I must admit I was smiling the whole time watching you 😻
Also, I was blown away when I first watched The Sound of Silence by Disturbed and I still am every single time I watch it! I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve watched it. As it’s absolutely incredible! I fly a lot and it’s on my iPad on constant repeat... it’s so amazing to listen to this flying @ night while I’m looking out the window ❤️🙏🏼🌍
The original: A warning. This version: Rage that the warning was not heeded.
Underrated take
Damn straight
Come up with an original comment plz lol
now that I heard that comment for the ten thousandth time...I think I finally get it. :-/
@@BabyNoah22 Jeez. Sorry.
love your vids man!
TravD23 Cant forget Johnny Cash’s cover of Hurt
The music video is even more powerful than the live performance. The imagery combined with David’s vocals are breathtaking.
Sabaton - Primo Victoria
Epica - Consign to Oblivion live at the Zenith
Both will get that head banging!
Best version but another one that moved me is K.D. Lang singing Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah. Song build and builds
Its great how you use music to connect with your kids. im learning so much from you sir, thank you. i can tell your daughter is paying more attention to the "visual" of the video rather than the music or the artistry of it. she did not connect so much to the "music" than she did to the visual. perhaps use lyric videos? she seems to try to connect to what she is seeing rather than what she is hearing/feeling. what you are doing is fantastic, and important. thank you
Thank you so much, great comment!!!
thank you so much for not pausing it. most people that review this videos stop it so many times. with this song you need to experience the entire song without stopping
Hurt- Johny Cash. Best cover ever
One of the best covers ive ever heard. Epic. This is how this song should have been done from the begining.
Bruh she oozing confidence now good job
Love the reactions and I have to compliment you one the great audio quality. It's amazing!!
Thanks for the note, nothing worse on RUclips than a video you want to watch with terrible audio, I really try to make it as clear as possible. Thanks again.
@@GlitchintheMatrixMultiMedia I watch quite a few reaction channels and the audio in yours is the best I have heard.
@@touchey Wow, that's great, thanks!
TY for letting song play without pause,i have seen several reactions to this and when people pause the song it ruins it.yall are awesome
High five to you both. You have a wonderful relationship
Thanks so much, appreciate the comment and for watching.
Apparently Paul very much approves of this version he even shared it on his social media platforms and contacted David to say - Job well done!
No need to do a reaction video in it but Disturbed singing this live on Conan is a MUST SEE. (if you haven't already)
Keep rockin. 😎👍
Sean Keating
My thoughts exactly!
Live with Myles Kennedy is even better IMO
He was sick with a chest cold while taping on Conan...and still managed to pull itboff
I agree...it kicked @$$ on Conan.
I saw that one too....pretty awesome as well.
You must be incredibly grateful for the video record of these moments. Thanks for sharing.
It almost look like she was getting teary-eyed at the end, lol I definitely could be wrong but I think I saw some fast blinking there
Maybe, not sure myself, but this one went pretty well.
I love that you listen to the end of the songs without interrupting and on top of that you have a great laugh!!
If my 11 year old daughter develops that kind of taste in music, I'll be a happy man. Currently, despite playing guitar in the school rock band, she still prefers pop that's a bit on the mindless side. But hopefully as she gets a little older her tastes will mature.
I love seeing the great relationship you have with your daughter. Very refreshing. Thanks for posting.
Another great song. Looking forward to the reaction later 🤘🏻
Another great reaction and on a roll 🤘🏻
Love, love, love this version!!! Disturbed killed it!!!
I ain't afraid to say it, this version is better than the original.
The guy from Disturb have a Classical / Opera voice training... he can get way more notes than Paul Simon. (but It IS better IMO)
At least as good. Just different.
Amen to that; and I'm old enough to remember when it originally came out.
This was amazing, very good, just not that good.
Brilliant, awesome, beautifully sang. I can listen to this song over and over.....love Disturbed version.
" I don't know why I laugh!"
Because the Internet ruins everything...
I love that you introduce your child to different versions of things . Kudos to you my friend. These are precious times, enjoy them.
Have you thought about a reaction to the Conan LIVE version*which imho is better)?
same story here
I noticed your daughters face and how her expression completely changed when she heard the first note. Amazing rendition. Ty for sharing ya'll.
Land Of Confusion is another great cover by Disturbed!
the song is 30+ years old.
still holds 100% true TO THIS DAY.
THIRTY! YEARS! of doing fucking SHIT about it!
@Jeremy Austinwhere did you get that info? This song was long before Genesis. It was written by Paul Simon & FIRST recorded by Simon & Garfunkle.
@@Fostermom4chis Jeremy was referring to Land Of Confusion not The Sound Of Silence!
@@davidpalahinjak2664 :)
There's a pattern in the ones she likes, because she already heard the original and it generates a goosebumps nostalgia. I got the same for these two, Zombie and Sound of Silence. Amazing voice talents, amazing ballads, amazing songs.
YES! Never pause anymore! LOL!
You guys are just too cool together 😃 Disturbed is amazing, and they killed this version!!
nightwish the poet and the pendulum live ....whit lyrics ;)
I do plan to get to that one soon. Thanks for the suggestion and for watching!
You must read about it first. Background and stuff. And trigger warning: Word "rape" is mentioned in lyrics... Very dark poetic.
Great reaction! This song is so powerful you can’t turn away. It commands your attention and inspires awe every time you hear it
