I love that Gojira has such a distinctive sound. I get where some people could be critical saying that they don't change it up enough but DAMN. It just feel like a nice, warm, heavy, harmonic, triplet based blanket!
@@jbasti227 He mixed a lot of different stuff - Dream Theater, Sepultura, Disturbed, Linkin Park, Slipknot, Skunk Anansie, The Cult, Guns and Roses... It's amazing that he's able to accentuate what's unique about every artist, truly a great engineer. You should also check out the catalogue of Jens Bogren, really clean production... I suggest Rotting Christ (if you're into that kind of stuff), The Ocean Collective (amazing band), Caligula's Horse, Insomnium - Heart like a grave
Every time I learn a song by ear, I still come back to my greatest uncle just to relearn the parts I misheard, when I'm watching the video I'm always like "No! He's wrong! It's not played that way I'm 100% sure!" Then I go back to the song and listen carefully and guess what? Uncle Ben is right every fucking time! LOL
i've actually used this method in song writing multiple times. songs like The Art of Dying are prime examples that opened my ears of slick ways to trick the listener. Great break down video!!
The change in subdivision from intro to the verse is incredible, its like an audible illusion! I couldn't get the hang of it but now it makes sense, thanks for explaining that uncle ben!
I like how you dive into the details and let us know when you're guessing. I clicked on a Silvera lesson by someone else, and it had Gojira's Neural DSP add right before it. Made it so obvious that the "lesson" was wrong. Kind of funny...
It's cool how they go from the triplet feel to 16ths but the pulse doesn't change. You get that a lot in classical music. The classical guitarist Fernando Sor has a piece called " variations on a theme of Mozart" 6 variations, but the beat stays the same. It's the note groupings that change variation to variation. So some feel faster than others but if you get out a metronome you will see that they are all the same tempo.
I think what’s really throwing people in the intro is the snare placement. Where the snare lands makes it feel like 16th notes. The kick is actually playing the real half notes and then quarter notes underneath, but we are ingrained in western music to always prioritize the backbeat.
It's really easy to figure out the intro, if you follow the drum beat. The whole time, Mario is playing half notes on the kick, then quarter notes in the second one
@@BenEller I learned guitar a few years after starting with drums, so following the rhythm of the drums just comes as second nature. It was very interesting to hear you explain the difference!
Pro tip for making scrapes even more nasterlier: find a natural harmonic spot you like (e.g. my favorite is the 5th fret but the in between frets like 2.74 or whatever works well too), and combine it with using the side of your picking thumb like you're doing pinch harmonics. 2 really high squealies mixed with scratchy sounds makes for a devastating pick scrape
Great as always! While waiting for the full album please consider doing more Pantera stuff, like Cowboys or Domination for example. Lots of people getting that wrong and your expert view on in could help. Your walk solo breakdown was amazing 💪 Thanks!
Love your videos like this dude. It makes music theory a lot more understandable and its not overwhelming. It may not be every intricate detail bit its perfect for a music theory noob like me who's been playing for years and never bothered 👌🏻
I do the triplet "perception of tempo change" thing all the time, most of my stuff is triplet-based, so when I go into a 8th/16th feel, gives you a whole different feel for transition parts and stuff like that :) I love that feeling of difference, but actually still in the same pocket.
That's super cool uncle Ben and to think for so many years I only was taking advantage of your fantastic rice but now with the new interwebs I can get my uncle Ben's without the mess....triplet triplet triplet 👍😎👍
13:07 Something that helped me a lot was to realize that the rhythm here was almost exactly the same as the end riff just sped up. Start by learning the ending riff first.
i thought the time markers were from the song and thought damn I don't remember it being that long lol... Then my brain started working and I realized it was for your video
I liked the GHOST stuff you played and I thought of KING CRIMSON RED album and a lot of post punk bands, especialy A track by Siouxsie and the banshees called Drop dead featuring one of my favourate guitarists , John Mcgeoch an incredibly inventive player. He was formerly with a band called MAGAZINE -their first single was "shot by both sides" and this features the same unusual harmonies that you talked about. The bands I have mentioned are really old ,late seventies early eighties but despite this they are worth checking out due to their innovative approach to compositions for the time. Your lessons are invaluable and has made me re assess my playing and techiques as I have developed a problem with my fretting hand thumb joint due to incorrect placement on the neck .Your video showed me that my hand position was wrong and i am trying to rectify the problem - cheers for that and many thanks!!!
Thank you for being honest about not knowing what’s going on in the chorus. That’s why I’m here tbh. But I’ll give it to ya strait, it’s sounds correct my dude! Keep it up! Subscribing too btw. This isn’t the first time I’ve enjoyed your content so I must say thank you the best way I can!
Glad to hear you nailed the tone with your G120. I have one on order and was hoping I could get Gojira tones. I was expecting the purple channel, huh! Now I have the Revv on order a used 5153 100S came up locally. Great timing! Haha. The guy is basically trying to get new price though. Gotta love price gouging.
@@BenEller Yeah, I'm super impressed. The green channel gets a bad rap online, but I think people are thinking of the mark II, which was voiced differently. Man, I can't wait for my build to be complete. It's been four weeks and they quote a month, but I'm expecting a couple of months.
Yeah, honestly, that bit on the low string for the verse tripped me up at first. Thought he was walkin down like you said, 3-2-1-0, just like in Silvera. Then I watched Nik Nocturnal's cover and watched his fingerwork. Good stuff, Ben! Though, with the intro harmonics, you missed some 5th fret harmonics. Listen back, those lower ones in between the 4th fret harmonics are what I mean. I apologize though, if you've been told countless times already over the last couple weeks, or even realized it yourself since uploading. Cheers!
Your videos are getting me more better at playing' ! This band has always struck me as just plain weird ... but I mean that in a cool way. My fave is the syncopation they use
this was an amazingly helpful and humble video haha :D I loved it and it really helped me to understand the song even better :) and play it a lot better obviously
I believe that in the chorus Christian just plays the same octaves again and again (on the B string and the G string), and Joe is kinda improvising with the harmonies.
Great job! I was so excited for this album and when I saw they chose Andy Wallace to mix it my excitement went through the roof. From Nirvana to Jeff Buckley, SOAD, etc..... the guy is one of my favorites. I also look forward to those drums being dropped into a canyon!!!!!! my gut tells me Andy did his trick of using triggers on the drums to feed the reverb. that way you can tailor the EQ to be even more massive, think Smells Like Teen Spirit snare sound leading into choruses. Can't wait to hear the rest of the album!
8:31 i think i got the effect, its in 8-D, u can got this effect with the Senheiser AMBEO Orbit, a lot of reverb and delay, and a lot of layers of some variations of that riff, its the closest i cant get, and the Senheiser AMBEO Orbit its free btw
First time I've watched this guy, and he definitely seems like he knows what he's doing. But with respect to breakdown sections I'm gonna say it's more important that you make sure your downstrokes come at the *end* of rhythmic units and on beats when possible/appropriate, rather than defaulting to having them on the beginning of phrases. I've been playing with actually "arranging" my picking in this way and I'd say it definitely makes a huge difference to have your accents all worked out that way.
So great to get some new Gojira! Excellent thoughts and breakdown too Uncle Eller. Now if we could just get a new album outta Twelve Foot Ninja lol. Surely they're Twelve Foot Five Inches Ninja by now.
I think they break off during the second half of the chorus and play separate parts, or that's at least how it looks in the video. Joe's in the 7th position while the other guitar stays in 12th, but it's seriously buried like you said
Thank you Uncle Ben, amazing as always!! Really annoyed at RUclips not even showing this up on my subscription feed 😑😑. For your next video, how about some Tesseract songs' analysis? Would love to see breakdown of their interesting rhythmic patterns.

Thanks for watching this full breakdown on the new Gojira song “Born For One Thing”! What song do you need a complete lesson on next?
Frayed ends of sanity riffs played under the solo , please
I still haven't figured the ending section of Ocean Planet. I think you've already done a lesson on the main riff but not on that section
Thanks for making it more betterer for me to learn.🤘🤘🤘
