Meet William Thomas (CSOTW Contestant 2023)

William Thomas
Bass from England - 28 years old. Singing in Round 1/Recital 4
"I was born in Hemel Hempstead and studied on the Opera Course at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. I have received a number of major awards, including the 2018 Kathleen Ferrier award and 2021-22 Critics’ Circle Award for Young Talent (Vocal).
As a Jerwood Young Artist I sang the role of Nicholas in the British premiere of Samuel Barber’s Vanessa at the Glyndebourne Festival. I have sung Shepherd Pelléas et Mélisande for Garsington Opera and made my debut at the Vienna State Opera as Snug A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
In the 2022/23 season, I’ve sung Colline La bohème for Glyndebourne on Tour and the Seiji Ozawa Matsumoto Festival and Snug A Midsummer Night’s Dream in my debut for Opéra de Rouen Normandie.
On the concert platform, I have performed Handel’s Messiah with the Academy of Ancient Music/Laurence Cummings, Mozart’s Requiem with Glyndebourne on Tour, Handel’s St John Passion with the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra/von Steinacker and Narbal Les Troyens with the Monteverdi Orchestra/Sir John Eliot Gardiner.
In the future, I’ll be making debuts at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and Teatro alla Scala, Milan, as well as a return to the Opéra national de Paris.
In my spare time, I am a very keen tennis player. I adore skiing, going to the theatre and seeing our family dog, Flossy (Flosshilde in full - I insisted that she had a Wagnerian name). I learned piano from an early age and accompanying myself whilst singing songs brings me great pleasure, along with sight reading through opera and oratorio scores."
