  • Smeagol is swimming along in a rocky stream, trying to catch a jumping fish. Sam and Frodo follow him
    SAM:Hey, stinker, don't go getting too far ahead.
    FRODO:Why do you do that?
    SAM:What?
    FRODO:Call him names. Run him down all the time.
    SAM:Because. Because that's what he is, Mr. Frodo. There's naught left in him but lies and deceit. It's the Ring he wants. It's all he cares about.
    FRODO:(looks cross) You have no idea what it did to him......what it's still doing to him. (he walks past Sam, then stops watching Gollum) I want to help him, Sam.
    SAM:Why?
    FRODO:Because I have to believe he can come back.
    SAM:(walks to Frodo's back) You can't save him, Mr. Frodo.
    FRODO:(turning around to face Sam) What do you know about it? Nothing! (Sam nods walks past him) I'm sorry, Sam. I don't know why I said that.
    SAM:I do. (turning back round to face Frodo) It's the Ring. You can't take your eyes off it. I've seen you. You're not eating. You barely sleep. (walks right up to him) It's taken hold of you, Mr. Frodo. You have to fight it.
    FRODO:(snaps back) I know what I have to do, Sam. The Ring was entrusted to me. It's my task. Mine! My own! (he walks off purposefully)
    SAM:Can't you hear yourself? Don't you know who you sound like?

    Frodo has to believe he [Smeagol] can come back. This has a lot of sense, Frodo not only wants to help Gollum, he needs to in order to know that is possible to come back after the consequences of carrying the ring. He is trying to see if he himself would be able to heal

    I love this debate between Frodo & Sam on whether or not Smeagol/Gollum could be saved after what the Ring did to him.
    I admire how much Frodo cared enough to want to try and rehabilitate him, but Sam was also right that Smeagol/Gollum was beyond saving. He was at a point where he was too far gone after spending so many years being a victim to the Ring.

      @@xxo8888 Well, Frodo said that at the beginning of the journey because, like Sam, he didn't see how Gollum could be saved. Only Gandalf snapped Frodo out of this. This is why Frodo saw the good in Smeagol and wanted to redeem him. I think people forget it was Gandalf who told Frodo to take pity on Gollum, because without Gandalf's intervention, Frodo wouldn't have pitied Gollum and the quest probably wouldn't have succeeded if it weren't for Gandalf.

    This is one thing I love about Frodo. He is completely kind, patient and loyal. Even if it may be too late to save someone like Gollum/Smeagol, he has a sense of faith and hope that he can save him. There’s nothing wrong with atleast trying. He tried to save him to the very very end and even forgave him after he died.

      Frodo is an asshole who chose the evil conspiring scheming deceitful Smeagol over his loyal to life friend and advisor Samwise! And this came and bit him right in his ass when Smeagol brutally tore off Frodis finger inside of Mount Doom! Frodo in that moment must have definitely remembered that he poisoned him against Samwise and he believed him without thinking it through and betrayed the trust of his best friend and wellwisher!!!

    • @mindybrown4952
      @mindybrown4952 3 года назад +7

      @@The_Beast_666 Um, no. You're wrong there. Frodo in the books did forgive Smeagol after the creature died. Frodo is kind, patient, and loyal as Chao says. Even in the films, and when they were at Mount Doom, Frodo was trying to convince Smeagol to come back to the good side. Frodo's not bad. It may have seemed like it, but he's not.
      If anyone's to blame for Smeagol's betrayal, it's Sam, because Sam is actually the brutish one who kept bullying Smeagol. You can practically see it in this video. Sam's not listening to what Frodo has to say about Smeagol and it shows. Who do you think tipped Smeagol off the edge when he betrayed Frodo and Sam to Shelob? It certainly isn't Frodo. Frodo may have triggered Smeagol to betray them, but it was Sam who caused the betrayal to begin with.
      I think you need to read the books again and analyze the movies a bit more to understand this. Because it's right there in front of you!

      Mindy Brown Maybe so but everything Sam said about him was true nothing but lies and deceit, for 400 years that ring destroyed all that was good in him and even though it almost came out the evil won in the end. Some souls just can’t be saved and in this kind of journey there is no room for kindness or compassion let alone trust for someone who has a history of being nothing more than an obsessive bloodthirsty animal. So no Frodo is not an asshole he is just too kind and trusting and that almost cost him his life and a friendship with Sam the only person who he should’ve trusted right from the start. Compassion is a strength Frodo has always had but it’s also his weakness and whatever good Sméagol had before was long gone after he killed his cousin and he proved it several times no matter how kind Frodo was. Personally I was waiting anxiously to see him die and when he did I was so relieved and found it funny how he died by his obsession.

    • @mindybrown4952
      @mindybrown4952 3 года назад +2

      @@obiwanthewiseass How do you know some souls can't be saved? I don't think that's true. There's still this possibility that Smeagol can be redeemed. That's what fanfiction is for. It doesn't end with the trilogy. So, there is hope for Smeagol's redemption. And yes, I know Frodo was too kind and trusting to Smeagol, but that's one of the things he's good at. Frodo even made me think that maybe there is hope for villains. I know that's strange, but that's one of the lessons Frodo taught me. Everyone's not lost forever, and that counts for Smeagol, too. :)

    • @obiwanthewiseass
      @obiwanthewiseass 3 года назад

      Mindy Brown And I agree in most cases yes a soul can be saved but the way I see it Sméagol didn’t want to be saved he only thought about one thing and one thing only the ring itself and he would do anything to get it which he proved when he killed his cousin and when Frodo escaped Shelob’s cave when he begged for mercy only to once more give into his animalistic desire for that ring that’s what ticked me off about Frodo being a compassionate fool. Whatever kind soul he was before was replaced with an animal who lost his sanctity and his reason, there was no going back for him maybe if he only had it for the same amount of time Bilbo had it but for 400 years he had it so that goes without saying. I’m just being real in the situation, at times I can be optimistic but I lost pity for Sméagol in Return of the king when I saw what he did to his cousin albeit he did the same too but I completely lost it when he begged for mercy like some pathetic asswipe and yet attacked Frodo anyway. So no Sméagol made his choice one too many times and threw aside Frodo’s pity and got what was coming to him.

      It makes for a great balance between Frodo and Sam. They each have their own strengths and weaknesses. Sam is not the perfect angel many fans of his paint him as. Yes, he’s darn near angelic, and so lovable and good at heart (I love him as much as the next guy), but he’s not perfect. Neither is Frodo. Sam is the one with more pragmatic resourcefulness and groundedness, while Frodo is the one with the most emotional wisdom and perspective. But Sam is also quick to anger and making assumptions, and Frodo is vulnerable to depression and questioning his self-esteem. But they make each other better; Frodo counters Sam’s hotheadedness with calmer rationale, and Sam counters Frodo’s despair with words and gestures of support. This is especially true for the books. They really make the perfect team.

    These films really lack subtlety. In the book Sam never spells out “the Ring is taking hold of you, Mr. Frodo.” We are left to detect that ourselves from the breadcrumbs that are dropped. But here Jackson does not trust the audience and instead keeps putting line after line in Sam’s mouth about how much the Ring is harming Frodo…when Elijah’s astounding performance is all we need to know that.

      @@JN-so6wtI wouldn’t call it abuse. Sam is not an abusive person at all. He was absolutely paranoid for Frodo’s safety and knew that not only was Gollum not above killing people for no rational reason, but also that he wanted the Ring which Frodo had, and thus the risk that he would hurt Frodo was very high. Sam is Frodo’s protector first and foremost, and it’s difficult for him to have any compassion or respect for someone who is a threat to Frodo. We see this early on in the book, where he refuses to be polite to Farmer Maggot and glares at him after learning that he beat Frodo as a child.
