Over the past couple of years my affection for Traxxas has shifted to other Rc manufacturers. I no longer think of Traxxas as my number one Rc brand there quality and business model has changed to the point where I will not purchase anymore of there products. Thanks for the update
It's just crazy to me. Traxxas stole from everyone's designs when they first started as a company. They literally got their start because of associated and others.
Yes, it's a crazy start to the company and how they've operated their business the last two decades. At least now, with information and social, everything is out in the open and the court of public opinion takes watch. And consumers can vote with their wallets. Revenue can take huge swings if companies repeatedly do the wrong thing.
Traxxas plays hardball. They will do whatever they can to "win" at RC business. I'm no fan of their practices, but it's weird to me that the same people who claim that "life is a competition" hate it when Traxxas does it.
Exactly. May have been a bad oversight, especially in current times. Would have been so much healthier for them in the industry if they explained what happened, apologized and gave props to the originators.
Mudboss is an east coast thing. Traxxas wanted to be much more popular across the country and deceided to change their name to play nice. Mudboss was not trademarked.
Mudboss is covered and defensible by Common Law trademark since it was used commercially by Salvas since 2014. If Traxxas truly wanted to be more ‘cross country’ they would not have launched as Mudboss and screw its up, waste money and harm a small company
1 reason I hate Traxxas. They steal designs, ideas and more and attack others just selling parts to use on those items. Traxxas will never see my money
They've been aggressive in litigation where few companies have the resources to fight or defend themselves. This makes rc the category toxic for competition and innovation.
My initial thought was, "well, people step on trademarks all the time, these things happen and at least Traxxas immediately turned around and did the right thing"... But then the Salvas brothers explain they've tried to get Traxxas involved in the Mudboss class for years, and it's clear that Traxxas knew EXACTLY what they were doing.
Totally! I bet it was planned all along. There's an old quote that goes something like: "I don't care what they say about me, as long as they spell my name right!" This move was nothing but publicity and a way of associating their rig with the existing, popular race class.
Exactly. They were steal the name and bulldoze the lil company but it looks like Salvas decided to protect themselves by officially filing for the trademark
Salvas did not apply to copyright the name Mudboss until AFTER Traxxas released the car by the way. Mudboss is nothing more than a class that uses a certain style of modified body on a Traxxas Slash. There is other companies that produces "Mudboss" bodies. Traxxas was naming the car after a class. The traxxas Mudboss body is a lot different. It is more inline with a Mid West Modified class car. Its not like Salvas made up the body design because he didnt. He made up the class and rule set based all off of a Traxxas Slash.
Right... and it's based on Traxxas... Plus cheating is racing... I think traxxas keeps it interesting... Fuck associated guys anyways... They ripped off Losi to get their start...
The issue is the name Mudboss’ which has been sold as a product since 2014. Traxxas can’t just steal the name as it is protected by Common Law Trademark. That’s why they had to change the name after launch despite their army of lawyers
For the most part, it wasn’t officially trademarked until after the Slash Modified release. Salvas admitted it on his facebook page. Do I think Traxxas did him dirty? No, but Traxxas could have done some research before naming the car originally. I’ve been racing MudBOSS for the last five years. There’s many things such as the specific battery called MudBOSS packs and nothing was done by Salvas, it’s the nature of the beast.
Good point about the trademark filing. But as I mentioned in the video, once you start using a name/mark for commercial purposes and are the first one, you have trademark rights to that name by what's called Common Law Trademark. This is a legal, enforcable right in the areas you do business in. The other products like the Tekin Mudboss battery, that had approval by Eric Salvas as he was a Tekin factory racer. He probably got royalties or a lifetime supply. Cool that you've bee racing Mudboss for the last five years. Looks like one of the best types of good ole racin and good times!
They should have sued, Traxxas. Give them a dose of their own medicine. These guys should hire the best ambulance chasing lawyers they can find and sue Traxxas.
Salvas applied for the official Trademark around June 21, 2024. Traxxas backed down and recalled their whole inventory and branding because they knew they had no chance, IMHO.
Tons of mudboss fans and other people were also complaining that it was a modified body and not a mudboss. So trademark fight against traxxas is hilarious for them to get a taste of their own medicine. But, will most certainly work in traxxas favor as well.
Get an FMS fcx18 instead. I have both. FMS is 20 more but Have to spend at least another 75 to get the Traxxas on par. TRX4m’s torque twist out of the box is crazy.
Hold corporations accountable, stop blindly giving them your money, make them earn your loyalty as a customer smh. Im going to my local hobby shop today, and i literally have to mentally prepare myself to try and avoid a Traxxas onslaught of overpriced plastic hell before i can relax and look around. " Look we have the new mudboss" or "How about this Xmaxx Ultimate that has been sitting since August 2023".
Sage words. Yes, we can vote with our wallets and loyalty. We can now inform ourselves better and not let companies get away with bullying and unethical tactics.
I love my traxxas trucks (xmaxx, trx4 21 bronco, e revo 2.0, 2wd slash) but man. If they would just use the leverage they have in the industry to focus on releasing cars and not being so crappy I think they’d truly be #1
Hey Rc Review! Love your videos, I recently just bought the cr18p 1/18th scale van builders kit, was wondering how yours was if you have done any mods to it. I saw someone put a Rc 4wd 370 motor in it and it was very quickkkk for only $40.
I was racing Associated RC10s with Mud Boss body’s back in the late ‘80s. Who did Salvas get there “idea” from? Dirt Modified is the traditional name, mud boss and mud bus was a nickname from 30(?) years ago.
It's ironic that they were forced to change the name, but the new Modified chassis will eventually become the default chassis for the Salvas Mudboss classes. I do hope that tracks continue to require a Salvas-style body for most classes, perhaps leaving the Traxxas body for a box-stock-only class.
These modified slashs dont fit in the mudboss class. Its closer to the slash modified class that it is named after. This car still needs changes to fit either class
I hate Traxxas the company. I was a fanboy and bought nothing else for years. Then i saw the light. Only a Xmaxx and TRX6 left in my collection and the Vigilante made my Xmaxx expendable. On top of the litigation i hate the premium pricing on decades old platforms and crap releases like this, the tiny slow monster trucks and BOLD NEW COLORS. I won't buy another Traxxas until they actually build a new platform with modern electronics.
Yeah aside from the business ethics, the lack of product updates and just milking the same platform for decades is really disheartening. They've gotten away with it but the landscape is changing with new companies that are updating and innovating models every FEW MONTHS.
Yup, plastic chassis, bunch of proprietary BS and a 20yr old basic radio that you get Everytime you buy a car, I understand the appeal to a beginner, but outside of that I can't understand why folks buy them.
I stopped giving my money to Traxxas after seeing the video about how Traxxas sued aftermarket parts manufacturers. I've always enjoyed kits over RTR anyway. I recently bought a 3Racing D5 kit for my nephew, and he loves it! I bought the Sakura M4 Sport a while ago, and the quality of the kit is superb!
I am in no way related to Traxxas and i don’t defend them. (In fact i couldn’t care less about what they do or don’t do as a company). BUT! I read A LOT of BS comments here. @@RDEnduroI'm not a Traxxas fan, but let's be real. The Salvas Mudboss uses a Traxxas chassis. Ya it was wrong to use the Mudboss name, but they corrected it. They've done worse. not in this case....Salvas Brothers did contacted Traxxas asking to collab....meaning Traxxas already know about the oval dirt racing kit made by salvas...plus they know the name Mudboss..
this is interesting as there is so much misinformation. Misinformation seems to be almost a normalcy now which is very disappointing. 2 diff articles I read, one of which matches your information while the other story was that the mudboss was not trademarked and despite common law, it could have still be used as a name associated with a particular product to describe a look; traxxas decided not to pursue. Now why traxxas didn't pursue bit was missing but the article alluded to they didn't want to bother with spending the money when it was cheaper just to modify the name (pun)
Great comment and insight. Thank you. I think Traxxas’ army of lawyers knew they were not in a defensible, dominant position nationwide for Mudboss. Also Salvas formally filed for trademark protection around June 21 And finally, there is the court of public opinion. Traxxas has a bad reputation and would look terrible if they stomped on the little guy with lawyers
Dude registered the trademark is out of Canada. Don’t think he has anything to do with it other than trying to get something out of it. The body that existed before was just a body. Wasn’t a whole RC car. Wasn’t unthinkable for them to make a whole rtr and call it what they want. It’s not like armma made it first. The mud boss of now was just the body on the slash chassis.
@@RCReviewChannel true but their name was associated with bodies NOT a entire kit. Their bodies are used on a slash chassis. And they call it a mudboss. So who’s not playing nice here. I’ll ask my rep next time I talk to him to get the REAL scoop. I’ll let ya know.
Thanks for the news. Name aside, Traxxas stole the body design concept without giving credit or loyalty if what those brothers claim is true which likely is. Hope they are working with lawyers
The body and oval car concept are hard to defend and the brothers are not litigious or have the lawyer funds I’m sure. That trademark though…. No excuse and that’s why Traxxas had to charge the name which I’m sure cost them dearly
I hope the brothers make traxxas pay, so traxxas can taste their own medicine. I like traxxas rc Z but hate their behavior & ways of sales & after sales to the world except USA.
This is ridiculous they should be paying those 2 brothers talk about a privileged attitude. Traxxas is making it easy for people to not like them but if I see a Traxxas RC I really like I’ll still buy it but I will not buy anything else purposely. We the RC enthusiast can put a major hurting on them if we choose to do so but they are not immune we have the power not them. And to add insult to Injury no apology the nerve Traxxas you are just no good at the way you do business ruthless & underhanded. Maybe you issue a late apology & save a little face but currently this is the face we are giving you! 🤨🙌🫵
Sadly, most ppl buying their rcs are clueless to the politics behind the scenes. Too bad they don't go woke. That would get them cancelled quick. Especially being in Texas .. hahahahah bud light treatment!!
Traxxas knew what they were doing they was going after the money getting greedy and they got caught trying to steal someone else's design and call it their own not 1st time won't be the last time but i did get one and well they cant have my unopened orange one
None of these RC companies are perfect by any means, it's just how Traxxas moves in this industry is what concerns me. They purposely buy every shelf space imaginable. This in turn puts other companies in a bind because all their upgrades and spare parts end up being hidden behind the counter or shoved in the back of the store room. Traxxas is the most anti-consumer company I've ever seen since game studios started introducing micro transactions in video games. Traxxas has whales too. Their days are numbered. REDCAT, AXIAL, ARRMA, LOSI. All have better company standards and practices. They actively embrace and support the aftermarket and encourage people to upgrade their rigs. Traxxas is like that shitty step-dad that constantly tells you no and to be happy with what you bought without questioning anything. Sounds abusive.
Yeah, so many bullying moves. My local hobby shop does not get the hottest Traxxas vehicles because Traxxas says they don't sell enough Traxxas proprietary batteries and chargers. Online, they only sell their hot releases on their own corporate website and don't allow the big online dealers to get it.
Francis, Modified better describes the Traxxas as it is more designed after a Midwest Modified. Not a Northeast Mudboss. All the Traxxas cars are sitting on dealer shelves and they will be re-boxed to the new Modified packaging. Kudo for Traxxas for not fighting for the name. Salvas is a very small fish in the pond versus the owner of the lake (Traxxas) I personally think that Traxxas could have done better research on what series the car actually resembles.
I think Midwest vs. Northeast is too deep in detail for a nationwide, global rc product. And the pond or lake size doesn't really matter when you're clearly violating a Trademark someone's been using for 10 years. Big T cannot win if it goes to court. More immediately, Traxxas cannot trademark 'Mudbog' moving forward. Now they're left with a terrible and confusing product name 'Slash Modified' that has little relevance to what the car actually is. At the end of the day, someone's getting fired over there. And good they did not pursue the name or the Salvas company. Everyone's watching now anyway so any kind of aggression will blow up.
@@RCReviewChannel True. Most people do not know the difference. But it's not unlike Traxxas to tie up another company in litigation for years. I think they are finally figuring out that reputation equals sales. Or they are just slacking. Little birdie told me they sold just over 25,000 of the Mudboss until sales were ceased awaiting new packaging. Only thing they did right is not put the word Mudboss on the car itself..
You are wrong about the copy right The trademark was only registered June 21 2024. Traxxas had every opportunity to copyright. Once again somebody not doing the proper research and putting wrong information out trashing Traxxas. This isn’t the first time you’ve done this.
True on the registration date but there is something called Common Law Trademark or First Use. Once you use a name for commercial purposes, you have rights to protect that name that are Very defensible by US law. It is explained very clearly in the video. Salvas has been using the Mudboss name since 2014! And they’ve contacted Traxxas for years for collaboration with ZERO response This channel was launched with Traxxas products and there’s a lot of great things about them. But their business practices/ethics is not one of them
Funny everyone talking shit about traxxas yet the trx4 platform is the most used in crawling just with hobbywing electronics. And these dudes just built off guess what a traxxas slash chasis platform lol. if you hate the company so much why use the platform to begin with.
Traxxas, makes some good products, no doubt about that. It's just the lawsuits and business practices and ethics that are shady. Still wish they would update their TRX4 before this century is over (unlike the Slash) or at least put a descent ESC. As far as the Salvas brothers, they love the Slash so that's why they created the Mudboss racing class in 2014 and have been trying to contact and work with them. I'm sure they still like the good ole Slash. Just didn't expect the company to try and steal their brand and trademark.
@@RCReviewChannel OMG stop spreading false information! Salvas doe NOT own the trademark. Just because they use that name for a class does not mean they own the rights to a complete RC Car.

The body and oval car concept are hard to defend and the brothers are not litigious or have the lawyer funds I’m sure.
That trademark though…. No excuse and that’s why Traxxas had to charge the name which I’m sure cost them dearly
@@RCReviewChannel You're probably right. If a lawyer smell blood, they would jump on it and work hard, and no need for the brothers to pay a dime
Lots of aroma guys still upset I see.
I hope the brothers make traxxas pay, so traxxas can taste their own medicine. I like traxxas rc Z but hate their behavior & ways of sales & after sales to the world except USA.
It's the lawsuit behavior and strong arm tactics that really harms the hobby.
Traxxas is a definite love/hate deal.
Exactly. They could do sooo much better.
it was not a trade mark problem
They got a taste of their own medicine.
Their lawyers were gonna sue themselves if they didn’t change the name
This is ridiculous they should be paying those 2 brothers talk about a privileged attitude. Traxxas is making it easy for people to not like them but if I see a Traxxas RC I really like I’ll still buy it but I will not buy anything else purposely. We the RC enthusiast can put a major hurting on them if we choose to do so but they are not immune we have the power not them. And to add insult to Injury no apology the nerve Traxxas you are just no good at the way you do business ruthless & underhanded. Maybe you issue a late apology & save a little face but currently this is the face we are giving you! 🤨🙌🫵
Agreeeeeeed!
Caught with their pants down for sure. Salvas had rights to the name and formally filed for Trademark in mid-June. Checkmate!
So what? Traxxas did exactly what you're supposed to do..
Cease and desist.
Their own lawyers would have sued themselves :)
Good video
Thanks for the visit
@@RCReviewChannel yeah they need a complete corporate restructure. I think everyone at the top needs to be replaced along with their legal department.
I guess Traxxas figured it was gonna cost them permission or not.
Ask for permission or forgiveness? :)
And they’ve contacted Traxxas for years for collaboration with ZERO response
This channel was launched with Traxxas products and there’s a lot of great things about them. But their business practices/ethics is not one of them
Except the person using it has been using it in Canada. International laws hold different standards.
Funny How all built of Traxxas period....developing a lexxan body gives you no power...winers... New body looks better.
Fortunately, Common Law Trademark protects the little guy here. That’s why the big company had to eat crow and change their product name
That's what they get for being such clowns
Karma gonna get ya.
lol😂😂😂 pathetic company...will always be
We are watching in the court of public opinion and will vote with our wallets
Second
I have a 8 year old veterra ascender. Its a beast
That’s one of the classics!
Just because they use that name for a class does not mean they own the rights to a complete RC Car.
not really...scx10 from axial is the most used...look all over the world..not just your country...axial started way before trx4 from the AX10 scorpion...
