      I think that's why a lot of people think it's trash. They got it as kids starting out before they knew how to dial in a tone and before they owned a good amp and speaker to play through. Mids set to 0, gain and bass to 10, why does it sound so bad?

      Two of my favorite bands use (or, at least at one point in their career, used) a Boss MT-2. Jon Nödtveidt of Dissection used it as a tone shaper (and, if I recall correctly, a booster), which he plugged into an overdriven Marshall, and Nortt use(s/d) it as strictly a distortion effect pedal... and I use it in the same manner as Nortt. Unsurprisingly, my sound is about identical to that of Nortt's, but then, I have been using that tone ever since I've had the fucking pedal. For extra blasphemy, I also use a Boss HM-2, another "crappy" pedal, if you were to ask the "experts".

    I was convinced by Ola's vid that the Metal Zone pedal can actually produce stellar tones if run through the FX loop

    • @MashaT22
      @MashaT22 Год назад +7

      You don’t even need an FX loop - but it sure is fun if you have one! If set properly with the guitar’s tone and/or volume set accordingly, you can get some killer tones. This pedal is mostly going to give a nostalgic vibe, but you can definitely get modern tones out of it too.
      People have the same issue with many overdrive and distortion pedals. I’ve seen loads of people say that the DS-1, OD-1, etc. are horrible. They just don’t know how to set them right for their chosen guitar. Most people literally dime all their knobs. That’s the worst thing you can do. For example, a DS-1 should usually be set with volume at 12 o’clock, tone around 10-12 o’clock-ish, and distortion should be at around 9-12 o’clock tops. Again the guitar knobs should not be dimed either. Gotta play around with that a little because every guitar is different. Then there’s also the amp knobs to dial in as well. Sometimes it’s worth bypassing if possible, but again, it just takes a little patience to dial in and voila!
      MZ is a killer pedal. Just depends what type of tone you’re going for, the gear you have, and the music you’re playing. You can use it for so many music styles, or just metal.

    • @Snoopdave2000
      @Snoopdave2000 Год назад +1

      @@MashaT22 I agree. You don't need the FX loop. That all started just like the incident a few weeks ago when one person says something on the internet and next thing you know people are trying to sell Bad Monkey OD pedals for $600. I've always run the MT-2 straight in. Just don't overdial it.

    Very effective presentation, B! You put the words in writing...and let the Music do the "TALKING"! Boss pedals tend to work best through a "clean" amp or PA (i.e. the "TONE" is IN THE PEDAL; critics don't understand this). I'm still finding wonderful uses for my ME-50 (which HAS essentially the "MZ" function in the "OD/Dist." section), and my V-WAH (which I use on a different pedal board). Where would we be without Ikutaro Kakehashi's efforts?

    The worst, the best... I never think in terms of absolutes because there is no such thing in life. I have a metal zone and although I rarely use it because there are certainly many superior options, it is far from deserving such a superlative. Objects don't change, what changes is our view or perspective of them. You gave it a chance and discovered something you weren't expecting, those finds are the best!

      Just kidding around here.
      I totally agree with what you’re saying here. Sound is all subjective and your music style and tastes change with time. Hell, i’m listening to stuff I never dreamed I would.
      This happened to me on some gear that’s why I think long and hard when selling guitars, amps, and pedals. Just when you sell it, you’re hit in the face and think I shouldn’t have let this go and I could have used it here. All gear has its place. It’s up to guitarist to find where.
      I love this pedal to be frank. It does have a really noisy core though and you need a gate or turn the volume down on your guitar during silences.
      You can run this straight into the power amp section of a tube amp by using the receive jack in the effects loop to get some damn good tunes. Check out what Ola did with this. It amazing.

    I've had a Metal Zone (original circuit - Waza is a bit different) since the 90s, and what fools a lot of people is it clips the midrange before and after the signal, much like a preamp. In fact, sometimes the best sound for a Metal Zone is to use it as a preamp - plug the Metal Zone output into the "line in" or "loop return" jack instead of the amp input and use the Metal Zone as its own preamp. The amp you use it with (and it's own settings) also makes a huge difference. Great video!

    My first pedal was a Behringer Ultra Fuzz which I bought at like 15, I thought of using it for bass but that idea fell short when I learnt the hard way about guitar pedals sucking the low end from bass. I hated how it sounded on guitar too so it picked up dust in a drawer for years. Fast-forward to now, the pedal is discontinued, got more experience under my belt and along the way I figured that chaining gain stages is key to a good tone, so now I run that fuzz (and all my drives) before a mild overdrive which I use as a preamp. It's all about trying combinations and playing what sounds good with them.

    I have used a MetalZone pedal for years now. I like the secondary EQ to really dial in my sound, although I do use it with a Boss EQ I bought at a pawn shop, and a few other pedals like compressor and reverb

    I've found with these classic hi-gain Boss pedals - such as the Grunge and Metal Zone - they sound a lot better with a nearly dead battery. For some reason, the tone warms up by a lot. I forget the name but, there is a company that makes a voltage limiter for adapters that does the same thing with more flexibility of adjustment.

    If DImebag Darrell's bottom-of-a-mudpit spitoon-full-of-loogies tone can still be iconic almost 40 years later, you know there's a use for any kind of sound.

    Fizzy, can of bees and etc;.. this was what experts reviews I’ve read. I was lucky to be introduced to this pedal when I was young trying to jam to Metallica. Never bought one cause it was too expensive for me at that time. After a while, I was lost in the world of overdrives listening and watching reviews of overdrives and distortion. Bought tube amps and other overdrives to get the tones I’ve favoured. Just 3-4 months ago, bought the MT-2W and that was it. Now I’m plugged into it with my SC20H in the low input and boosted with the Rocket Fuel from Majik Box if I can’t turn that little beast up. Don’t hesitate, get one of these as part of your arsenal. Take your time tuning those eq knob.

    When I had when I used to use a tube driver from Arion to make it sound really cool what I did is I only put the gain halfway up the trick is to run the tube driver before the metal zone that way it will take the brittleness out
