  • A crispy, Japanese-inspired appetizer. Ingredients for the tempura batter are listed below (click "show more). Thank you for watching.
Vegetable Tempura Batter (adapted from Argo Foodservice: www.argofoodse.... Feel free to play around with the seasonings.
Makes enough for 4 cups of vegetables
    3/4 cup cornstarch
    1/4 cup all-purpose flour
    1 teaspoon baking powder
    2 1/2 teaspoons garlic salt
    1 1/2 teaspoons onion powder
1/4 teaspoon finely ground black pepper
    1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
    1/2 cup water OR beer
    1 egg slightly beaten
A note about deep-frying: You can fry the vegetables in a deep-fryer, a Dutch oven, or a heavy skillet. Be sure to use a vegetable oil that exhibits a high smoke-point (I used canola; peanut oil or corn oil will work as well). Heat the oil to 350°F. Fry until the vegetables until the coating crisps and turns and golden-brown.

Kevin, thank you for this recipe. I tried this recipe with garbanzo and rice flour on 5:1 ratio. Mannn they’re crunchier.

I like to add a tad of turmeric powder to the batter. It makes the vegetables golden. Thanks for another good video Kevin.

Looks great. Wife makes the same batter but with cold seltzer. Depending on the season, works great with eggplant and okra.

AND AGAIN...... a great recepie-idea for a cosy evening....
It is one thing to prepare a meal and another to present it ....yours allways look soooo fine.
I will try this..tomorrow on sunday...have no mushrooms in the house but the sweet potatoe and onions and everything for the batter..
I might not be able to have it while I am watchinf a football-game...since my son nr3 plays American Football for GALAXY and the German National Team and I am allways far too excited to have anything to ear while watching his games on tv
I will have it -while watching "The cook of Castamar"..... Have a great weekend

I absolutely adore tempura vegetables and shrimp!!! The Thai restaurant in our town offers a wonderful tempura vegetable tray and also wonderful tempura shrimp!!! I make pretty good tempura at home as well. I also like to do fried shrimp and veggies in panko crumbs.

This looks absolutely delicious! But: 1. Isn't deep frying both unhealthy and super fattening? and 2. Can I replace the Fry Daddy (which I don't have and don't intend to buy) with regular frying? Thanks for so many lovely ideas!

    • @kevinleejacobs1364
      @kevinleejacobs1364  3 года назад +1

If you make the tempura just as I did -- fry at 350°F and let drain -- the vegetables should not be the least bit greasy. A deep skillet or Dutch oven will work perfectly fine for deep-frying -- just be sure to use a thermometer to check oil temperature. Enjoy!

This looks so good Kevin! I love Tempura batter. I’ve had shrimp coated in tempura and deep fried.
They were delicious. I hope this isn’t a dumb question. I wonder if the same results could be obtained using an air fryer? Have a nice weekend!!

    • @kevinleejacobs1364

Hi Dorothy - In my experience, there's no comparing air-fried food with deep-fried food. The latter is always better!

@@kevinleejacobs1364 thank you so very much. I learn a lot from you. It is a pleasure to see you restore old-world beauty and elegance. I so dislike these chrome and minimalist looks in decor. I thoroughly enjoy your home, gardens, helpful hints, charm, and elegance....not to forget your recipes, of course. I am a vintage lady of 80 years, but a youthful spirit who loves to cook, and decorate for all seasons, and still learns from someone like you. My husband of 55 years says, "What has gotten into you with all these Amazon purchases for the already overcrowded kitchen?!" But he eats very well. Thank you.
