God, Jason has a bass sound that nobody else can totally capture. I know that a lot of that really is just him and the way he plays though. It's aggressive af.
thats a part of why him and cliff are held in high regard as bassists, both played them like guitars. Cliff brought the complexity and experimentation. Jason definitely brought raw POWER. also having lemmy as a influence definitely makes u a dope bassist haha
Saw MetallicA in El Paso Texas in 1989. I'm a guitarist so I lean towards keeping an eye on Kirk and James, Jasons bass solo was killer and the way he worked the crowd. Priceless. Saw them again in 1992 in Las Cruces NM. James had just been burned in that stage accident and both his arms were wrapped up so they had their guitar tech play guitar for him while he sang. Jason did a killer solo and a bunch of singing with James. Best MetallicA show ever.
@@mrkickless392 not as loud? The guy made a joke abt the studio album AJFA. It had nothing to with jason playing quieter lol. If anything he was the most audible live, since he played with a pick and did backing vocals.
Even though I'll always say that Cliff was the best bassist of Metallica as he had such a unique style and presence in the band, Jason was more Metallica than the 3 other guys ever were and it wasn't even his band. He breathed life into a train wreck and made it work. Jason will always be To Metallica for Metallica!!!
Oh aye, without a doubt the best Metallica bassist in my opinion. Cliff was an inspiration, but Jason is a workhorse, night after night terrifying energy.
Fuck, i really wish he were still in Metallica. Rob is a terrific bassist, but Jason brings so much more to the band. Still, I'm glad to see he's (happily) doing his own thing.
Rob is a better all around bass player (ST, Infectious, Jazz, Funk) but I feel Jason is a better fit for Metallica and brought a huge stage presence to the band... and I also hate seeing Rob squatting all over the stage.
that man who's been there, done that, played that one solo in that one concert, right there, in his home playing bass. Sometimes I like to see this video just to remember this is the same guy who was metallica's savior at the time of great pain and trouble, and now hes just some guy like any other who has the bass as a hobby.
@@baskill0982 thatvwould be killer. Also slayer shoulda hung it up when Jeff checked out. Now Tom looks like dirty wizard/homeless santa. Also this video is kickass!!
I bought his "Heavy Metal Music" album that he put out around '13. I had mixed feelings on it; to say the least. There were some really cool riffs and ideas there, but goddamn just about every song would meander on into God knows where.
Man ... I miss Jason so much in Metallica, the sound, the feel, the artistic side of his personnality, stage presence, look, his voice ! Take care Buddy, and thank to the camera man for this video
His an unreal bass player no matter who his part of as a band member. I have. One his Newsted T-shirts because I am a fan of his music. The man clearly has such talent musically.

Daaaaaamn that's is some wonderful tone! Very heavy,, very dirty, fits metal incredibly well!
I became a fan in 1991 in 5th grade after buying Puppets on cassette. I been a huge fan ever since and I firmly think the Newsted Years were MetallicA at their absolute peak.
Rob is super talented but I prefer Jason idk have a sold answer why but I just do. I've seen him live and Rob many times. Both seem very nice no ego any way and dam that in it self for a musician is unheard of.
I can see why. Rob is definitely not a metal bassist. I'm definitely not a fan of his tone, though it isn't bad by any means. But Jason has a much brighter and tighter sound. A lot more precise too due to the natural precision of the pick. Jason is a natural metal bassist. Rob should be in a funk band. His talent is quite wasted playing Metallica's rather simplistic music.
Juan Solos and it’s ok to voice your opinion. If people don’t agree then they have an issue. A healthy debate is ok..not someone getting pissy about what you’ve commented. I call them lot sensitive fuxkheads.
It's weird watching this video of Jason newsted in his home setting playing bass guitar after many videos of himself on acoustic guitar and after seeing him playing with Metallica and Newsted project
From Chile...Wow Jason you are FREAK IT OUT!! when you play bass...you really KICK ASS of many bass players!! I saw him live with Metallica in 89, the man stole the show
I saw them in Philly twice in 89.
He always stole the show. That pissed off James for sure.

@Daniel Treadwell lmao.
'92 at the Spectrum!
When you see Phantom played with a pick like that, it makes you realise just how fast Steve Harris's fingers move!!!
Exactly what I was thinking!
Jason plays it way faster here tho
Steve's original part isn't as fast as that, it would sound like slayer otherwise.
Jason rocking out Maiden’s Phantom of the Opera 🤘🏼monster tone
Was loving the part of the video the most!
He IS one of the best of the world
Cleveland Ohio rock.
👉The song at the beginning is "Supernaut" by Black Sabbath.
i would love to see him try to play that song without his pick lollllllll
With all due respect to Metallica bass players, past and present, I always loved there sound with Jason... the pick and his backup vocals
if you could hear him

Any band would be lucky to have him. I can't believe that one took him for granted.
Jason’s performance during S&M was incredible. That’s why he will always have my respect
Loving the Supernaut jam at the beginning 🤘🏻
Was looking for this. Studio quality Jason covering Sabbath would be amazing
Jason playing Supernaut and Phantom of the Opera 😍😍
Such an underrated player the snobbery about using a pick is nonsense. I play with fingers fast but found using a pick much more difficult.
This is the first jason newsted video in months...
ye
Newer one on my channel
Years it seems like
He lost his pick for months.

Rob a bad bassist????? What????
Damn maybe you prefer Jason but you don't need to throw shit to Rob dude

Bring Newsted back to life and re-conquer the heavy metal world!!
Slayer are retiring, Kerry should form a band with Lombardo and Newsted!

rob is more like cliff imo, but jason newsted is his own guy entirely

How sick is it to hear Newsted rockin' Maiden!!!
1:42 PHANTOM OF THE OPERA!!!!!
amazing jason talent on bass
Every time his foot went near that Wah pedal I was hoping he’d give us some for whom the bell tolls....just one more time Jason please!!!
Jason was just a different breed of guitar man. Absolutely phenomenal bassist and brought out the metal in Metallica.
He is unique. His tone and picking style so great and precise. My fav Tallica bass player.
Awesome bass player pure metalhead Metallica never the same without Jason his backing vocal was a monster 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Bass played with a pick hits so different. It has its time and it's place and I love it.
Jason, we need you back!
That was fookin delicious when Jason played Phantom of the Opera
Love watching Newsted play.
Damn I never thought I’d hear him play Phantom Of The Opera. Absolutely sick
Yeah, it's quite hard to play it with a pick and not sounding like crap.
Happy birthday Jason! My hero! I just love how he attacks the bass with a pick.

Jason Newsted plays Maiden. The best two players ever Steve and Jason...Different in styles, but the same in hearts ,in love to metal...
