ソロで踊ってるのもほんとに凄いんですが、アステアと二人で踊ってるときが一番好きかな♬
ラストの白黒映像は同じ映像の続きですが、カラーがなかったので付け足しておきました。
ラストのターンは軸も音も外さず完璧ですね、、、脱帽🎩

Two of the greatest "Hoofers" ever. Each intimidated by the talent of the other. Fred Astaire called Powell the ONLY female dancer who intimidated him.
Yes, that's why I want young Japanese people to know the legendary tap dancers.

He was being self-deprecating. Fred's dances were always innovative. Having watched Powell in several films, she came across as a bit 'samey'. Fred was the greatest popular dancer of all time. When the famous choreographer George Balanchine (who worked with both the Bolshoi Ballet and the New York Ballet Company) was asked who the greatest dancer he'd ever seen was, the expected answer of a great star of the ballet world was not forthcoming. Instead, he answered 'Fred Astaire'. How right he was.

This is one of my favorites.
Sad that movies aren't made like those of the 30's and 40's especially those which had great dance numbers. We have lost so much, and gained nothing.

The movie critic and historian David Thomson named this as his favorite scene in any film, and added that the moment at the end when Ellie's dress floats back down is the most beautiful in cinema.

Wow. Always my first thought when the topic of the best tap number on film is brought up, and always thought the black & white look just added so much to it. I worried that this colorized one would distract from it. But I actually like the look, it adds a little warmth to the feel. Skin tones always seem a little over-saturated in these, but it gives a new look to this sublime number. And color or not, the dancing is just sheer perfection. If I get to Heaven, I will only be happy if I can dance this number through eternity.

I think it was the song Begin The Begein that was playing during an air raid when my grandfather asked grandma to marry him when he was on his next leave from the 48th tank regiment back in 1940. They were married 72 years.

Thanks for posting this. I always thought that whenever Eleanor Powell danced with Fred Astaire she danced rings around him. Technically they are both amazing dancers but she looks effortless and he looks like he's really working for it. Just realizing that she hardly ever looks down and he looks down frequently. I just love these 2 dancers. Such perfectionists!

I couldn't disagree more. Her upper body is static, compared to Astaire..Gene Kelly said she was a great tap dancer, but added that's all she was. She lacked the versatility and expressiveness of Astaire and the way he used his entire body. She dances very upright compared to Fred.

Gene Kelly said that she's a great tap dancer but only a tap dancer. She lacked the versatility and expressiveness of Astaire and Kelly. They are both wonderful in this routine, but it is obvious that she dances very upright compared to Fred, who uses his whole body more.
Kelly said some deprecatory things about Powell earlier in his career. But when she made her cabaret comeback in 1961 he was quoted in Parade magazine calling her 'the kindest, most thoughtful girl in show business and one of the greatest dancers of all time.' And when her posthumous star was dedicated on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Gene was the emcee. He grew more gracious as he aged.
@@esmeephillips5888 How anyone could say Ellie lacked versatility and expressiveness in her dancing is beyond me. Sounds like sour grapes to me. I love Gene Kelly’s dancing but I think he was a bit full of himself. lol
@@cindyhutchins5532 Kelly was more gracious in later years, but while active he was not as considerate or gracious towards his lady partners as Fred.
Beyond that difference in temperament, I can understand why her contemporaries struggled to evaluate her work, bc it was so extraordinary a departure from their notions of how women should dance. The truth is that 80-90 years later we are still trying to catch up with her.
