I did flinch a bit but it actually saved me most of the time because I don’t flinch tho the side or move my head much but I flinch backwards or I duck and I’ve pulled off some good dodges because of it. Although the thing I have to look out for with it is that I have to make sure my feet keep up with my upper body because I fell once from going backwards too fast and my feet not keeping up

    Nailed it, big no-no, fencing 101... always better to take the hit full on the front of the face if you messed up and just own it and try to do better next time, without breaking your posture. Ducking, flinching, and all that crap not only looks bad (poor form and posture) but doesn't really help you... even if you escape that one hit you aren't set up well for a riposte.

    I've got a hard back of the head protector. You can get one for 30 or so bucks, and it just straps right in under the overlay. Sellsword is still making a mistake, but if he has the same setup that i do, then he is in no real danger.

    • @irrelevantfish1978
      @irrelevantfish1978 4 месяца назад

      I don't think that it's necessarily true that you're in _no_ real danger, as the effects of shocks to the brain stem are somewhat unpredictable. None of the rear protection I've seen for HEMA masks would save you 100% of the time if a powerful blow hit the base of the spine.
      However, wearing hard protection for the back of your head is still a whole lot safer than not, and just makes good sense, IMO.

      Protective gear should NEVER be a substitute for competence. In fact, in sparring, you're actually simulating unarmoured combat. The gear is only there for safety. In a real life situation that sparring is meant to represent, that blow to the back of the head will be B-A-D.

  • @417hemaspringfieldmo
    @417hemaspringfieldmo 4 месяца назад +3

    He does that a lot. It s a show of bad habit on both sides....it s a sign of lack of control from the person delivering the strike ...but it s also a sure sign of lack of spatial awareness or simply disregard to your own safety when you put yourself into that position every time. This may be due to a lack of practical experience and knowledge of the historical sources but also a bad habit acquired on other "sword related sports"like kendo/kumdo and especially from sport/olympic fencing. From which SSA sin abundantly. The late acute Öberhengen is a valid way to at least present some kind of cover while trying to disengage....abusing it s use may also put you on a terrible position if the opponent decides to literally press on with their sword against your barrier. Nothing that experience and actual responsible/serious study of the historical sources on a more modern competitive scenario application. My two cents.

      In that first video David came as an “all or nothing” guy despite having a good point. He made a mistake dealing with absolutes, like a sith, and Shad did punish that point. But Shad also made a mistake by taking clips of David videos out of context. Let’s be real, there is a reason why Shad fell out of grace of other heavyweight of swordtube as Matt Easton and Skallagrim, he shouldn’t be regarded as 100% trustworthy, and yet he managed to, perhaps, humble David a little.

    great analysis, but I have a different perspective. It seems to be more a gear issue. I come from the bohurt school, and the gear we use is more protective in the back than the front. The back is solid steel, the front is slotted or wolfribbed. Why, if you are all training to 'fence' on the round, do you not have at least plates in the aventail back flappy thing...

    Hi,
    1. Tennouchi is a kendo principle that is better for the weapons used by kendo.
    2. Striking with your sword rather than moving your sword first is asking to get thrusted in the face including when cutting
    3. If you're going to train anti- flinch training, you should be using socks or fabric. Even light hits to the brain are bad, especially if repeated.
    4. Hanging parries are terrible. Almost universally trash as a defensive move.
    5. Colpo di villano is an **offensive** provoking move, not a defensive hanging parry with response.
    Your advice to hang and bang is intermediate at best.
    Thanks.

      Hello,
      Im aware that you are a friend of SSA who spars with him occasionally, so I'm assuming that you may have taken offense to this video, and that you may be sticking up for your friend, so I choose not to be offended by the slightly condescending nature of your response. If that is the case, I want to make it clear that it wasn't my intention to humiliate anyone by doing this, though I may have inadvertently done so, and I apologize if that's the case. I was trying to address a problem that nobody talks about, that's all.
      1-3: We focused on calibration before any strikes to the head were made. Everyone was gentle. If we do this again perhaps ill consider socks or fabric.
      4: Lots of fencers in HEMA use them. I'm pretty sure you have as well. But you're entitled to your own opinion
      5: Can be used either way. Either way its usage in this case was just a potential defensive action to protect the back of your head in these situations.
      It would have been constructive for you to provide a solution to this problem of your own rather than just trying to qualify mine. Id be genuinely interested to hear it. Considering that you struck SSA in the back after he made this exact mistake in one of his videos, I'm assuming you're just throwing shade at me, and that's fine.
      Either way I respect your opinion and you philosophy on fencing as it was presented in that video. Lets not be ugly about these things
      Thanks

      You are correct in all of the assumptions as the nature of your video in the first place reads as condescending. I am entitled to my opinion as you have used footage of me also.
      I would like to add that your advice in using a hanging parry is still in essence turning your back to the opponent, just with the sword in the way.
      And yes you are correct, I have this opinion because I have used hanging parries.
      Also, my apologies for not making myself clear in providing a solution: make minimal use of hanging parries (leaning to never) and use the 3-4ft of sword to keep between yourself and your opponent, doing as much as possible to keep yourself squared to them.

    You also should consider that fighting with swords is not for cowards, so if you're training for combat and your practice is to make yourself unable to attack or parry by leaning back because your tactics or movement is fundamentally wrong. How is that going to get any better if there's a real blade going your way, people who master running away do it because their understanding of offence is solid in the first place. Their evasive action does not hinder their ability to strike, e.g Floyd Mayweather or real life marines performing fire and maneuver. So that's something to consider about for any competitive sports. But if its in the idea that you're only doing it for sports, they can do whatever and say whatever. Because in the end if they're not wanting to be better if they're not going to respect weapons to its prime directive and specs.
