SPAR-B-QUE 2020: LAD Historical Fencing
Shad for me, way to smooth, skallwill loose quickly imo. Neither are swordsman and move through their core properly. With that footwork id say both are amateurs, and never had real fights nor sparing in their lives. Shad can actually weild a sword with speed. Ya cant fight properly nicely. With 2 hours of training shad i beleive could have him beating skall every time, i cant say the same vice versa, skall just cant use it properly yet, not enough years and too new to it. And martial arts in general.imo
Skall insta Ko's by throwing pummel
I know we have a lot of hindsight now but I can't believe you just glossed over that Shad obviously hasn't fought anyone ever at any point who wasn't a guest or cocreator on his channel
I might have mentioned it if it were true
@@Apperceptive_Swordsman I mean I just watched it now and your initial intro of the two is video of Skal fighting while you explain he's in a club, then you show Shad fighting an unnamed person while you explain he claims he was in kendo but we haven't seen it (to be clear you said this, "we haven't seen it", that's not my explanation). If you know more than that you didn't actually say it in your video. Like I've been watching Shad for years and I've just realized today he's never been shown fighting anyone besides testing some weird weapon against a passive opponent. I'm specifically looking for him fighting anyone for real now so if you have that I want to see it, but this whole video is just you interpreting from the same two clips, one of each fighter.
@RussOlson-pl3kf he faced people at a LARP event and members of a HEMA club who were obviously not cooperating with him, which is the main footage I used
@@Apperceptive_Swordsman Did that footage come from him? Like what I'm getting at is this doesn't really make sense. I'm a kendoka and we wear masks all the time or you can't fight. You said Shad trained kendo in Japan, although he doesn't really specify so you're not sure, but then he's only worn a mask once. That tells me he's never trained at all anywhere if he's never worn basic equipment. That's why the source of the footage of him actually fighting matters so much. I'm digging for evidence that Shad has actually trained or fought anywhere and it has to come from someone other than himself. If anyone has anything then I want to see it.
@RussOlson-pl3kf my guess is that his kendo experience isn't very substantial. He may have never actually gotten to the level of sparring. I have no idea. But yea the match against the HEMA practioner was an event that he was invited to, he didn't orchestrate it, and he claims it's his first time wearing a helmet with a longsword at least.
This is like asking if a man who’s never entered an actual rim g before could beat a heavyweight boxer. Shads footwork is dogshit, his body is unhealthy and is winded easily, he has very little actual experience, he’s overconfident and just wrong about fighting, most of his videos are him fighting his employees and it’s clear that they know nothing and just let him wail on them. Shad is a glorified LARPER, skal wins no diff.
This would make a fun match make it so😊
skall solos
Lots of Tech people I bet.
that's awesome man! 🤘💀 did you make a video while you were there? (besides this one obviously lol)
I took a few videos but I was more interested in enjoying the atmosphere and getting away from the real world 😅
@@Apperceptive_Swordsman Totally man I get it, especially if it was your first time going. Gotta just enjoy it and drink it all in.
Thats Really Great!
Skall all day.
Shad isnt real, he cant hurt you🦊
Skallagrim would absolutely trounce Shad. Pretty sure Skall has more experience and looks fitter.
fellas we powerscaling real poeople now. can they beat goku and how far could they go against the us military?🧐
Shad would loose. Purely from sparring history, he just hasn’t had the experience generally to compete. Skallagrim regularly use to upload sparring.
Did your dog just dab you up?
Skallagrim hands down
My money is on Skall, though I agree 100% with what he said. It's nothing against Shad, just that Skall trains (or did, or does intermittently, I have no idea), and as far as I know, Shad just does a lot of thought exercises and chopping random stuff with random things. Skall might lose if he is bicycle-injured...but on the other hand, he's married to a crazy sword-fighter person who also does this stuff...attacking him means taking on two.
Did fencing masters just think up fun theoretical techniques in their spare time even though they may never be practical?
Now do matchup of some of the younger HEMA RUclipsrs such as Sellsword Arts and robinswords, perhaps Tyranth from the Shadiversity channel, were he to spend a good solid month or two training intensely. Then maybe see how you'd think they'd fare against instructors like the guys at Blood & Iron HEMA or European practitioners.
Apperceptive Swordsman wins, obviously.
🤘💀 for the algorithm! AND SKALLAGRIM!!!
Very cool video! Lots of goofy grips in here I never would've guessed had actual usage and felt like something I would've done as a kid because I thought it looked cool haha. The spear fighting grips were interesting too, seeing how you can use your sword to augment what is in most cases a "better" weapon or defend against it.
So you can reverse-grip a sword, if you use it as a shield...
Joachim Meyer has Brechfenster
From where are the illustrations? Looks amazing, is it some medieval book?
The Gladatoria Group manuscripts is where those images come from. And yes, the images are 5 or 6 hundred years old roughly
Notice how it's only viable if you don't have your dominant hand available? That's because it sucks
Where i am from we call that technique “the cock choppa”
It seems like you'd have a lot less control, but it would work in those very specific situations. It would probably be a lot more effective with a shorter sword (say an arming sword or other one handed blade, since that's what someone would generally have as a sidearm) - just because it's less mass to control in a slightly awkward position.
in the ful video i go into more detail, but you are right. theres another grip of the sword that is more stable for the same technique
This is an interesting and cool use case
I genuinely don't know why people are so adamant about reverse grio being viable, i tried it yesterday and it just felt awful, regardless of effectiveness it's just really uncomfortable and kinda hurts your arm
literally just showing a historical technique featured in surviving treatises bud
I think its more how so many people want to justify as being useful like how a lot of media tries to Where as what you posted is more like Fiore with Sword Throwing or "Ending them Rightly", or really...anything from Myers treatises. There are certainly situations where otherwise u orthodox techniques and such are useful, but like you said, there are a specific few techniques and its not really the way one would hold/use their weapon throughout a fight
@@Apperceptive_Swordsmanruclips.net/video/wDg_QSQTtos/видео.htmlsi=JdEIoy84dVVNU9xj
@@Apperceptive_Swordsman They're not overlooking that, just noting their experience and opinion on the matter. note "Regardless of effectiveness". Personally, I regard off hand reverse grip as unnecessary and clunky in MOST circumstances. In your example on this short, your spear hand suffers for a limited and flawed level of defense. It is useful, but you sacrifice control of your main weapon
It was mainly only defensive techniques for specific situations In my experience I haven't found any offensive applications of a reverse grip.
Notice how he said only for a handful of techniques
I can count on one hand how many reverse grip techniques would be useful, and none of them are that Kylo Ren crap
Would be fun to do a weird guard roulette sparring session.
that would be fun!
I like that shirt
Not bread and butter =/= bad... just means something not you build a fighting style around. Also, blow my mind, alot of guards makes reserve gripping a longsword look tame, reality can be stranger than fiction. Also, Bard core Rick Roll :D
I am wondering if some of these techniques were used just because that’s how the scholar was holding their sword at the time 🤔
Why? Because they seem random?
@@Apperceptive_Swordsman correct. If a technique exists for one specific reason and that reason is so random it had to be because of an isolated incident.
@@Apperceptive_Swordsman also to add to this, I’m going to theorize that the only reason why the technique was written into text was for bragging rights because they did it and it was cool.
Take that sellswords arts.
Uh oh what did I miss 😅
@@Apperceptive_Swordsman😅 your video remembers me to all the reverse grip didn't work stuff on sellswords arts channel.
Oh man. Well he can take this as a reason to offer another reverse grip video to the Dark Algorithm Lord
@@Apperceptive_Swordsman I hope he will mention you. You owned it.
🗿👍
For slippery nylon swords, the angle at which the impact occurs is very critical. An interesting episode in the last part of the video with the clash of two Montante swords.
it seems to me that for such an application as in the picture, you need to be able to move and even think in a completely different way. here, most likely, this is not a defense like in your video, but an attack. an unexpected attack from an awkward position.
Why does the ref have a quarterstaff?
Man, you are great! Excellent, very visual work done! Respect from Russia!
Thanks! Respect from me to you as well!
Sorry for the green screen issues. I didn't realize when filming that small differences in lighting would throw things off so much!
They’re both way too old and slow now, would’ve been good to see them spar. All they do now is rant
This is interesting. Seems well thought out. Good presentation of data sourcing and expectations. I was hoping for Shad to win... but expecting Skall to win. But with the data presented, I agree that three doubles voiding the match makes sense.
Joms Vikings 🤘💀 That's pretty metal. I think you make a very good overall point here. Control and discipline are definitely the most important aspect of any martial art. That's kinda the whole point of training in the first place. Interesting philosophy and approach to training safely. Silver for blood is a good one lol never seen that before.
