I wasn't sure what to think of this when I heard it at SGP, but the sound was out there. I immediately took to this more than Money Ties - that glass breaking sound does something for me.
The glass breaking is awesome and I just watched the SGP performance, love that people were respectful enough to keep it under wraps till now that’s so amazing
Actually I really like hearing your thought process about how you feel about this. I’ve probably seen the video about a dozen times now and I liked it the first time, but love it now…I believe the album is predominantly not going to be a rap album so I wonder if using this song as the introduction marks the “end” of one REN. I am excited to see what comes next. Anyway really good and thoughtful reaction. I have a sister who studied film making and has shot some indie things and she once told me that knowing “ how the sausage is made “ in some ways makes it harder for her to just get absorbed by and enjoy a film. Wondered if you feel similarly..
It could be that partially? Usually knowing more about how film works makes me like stuff even more. I actually think in this case it might be because I’ve seen way too many movies and short films and have watch a lot of industrial/arthouse short films some imagery that seems really cool I’ve just seen a million times so it comes off as sort of overused to me even though in the grand scheme of things it’s not if that makes sense
I totally agree about the "sometimes more money doesn't make a more impressive video" sentiment - I like this one, I do! And I think the general concept of many of the images here really builds something important in conjunction with the lyrics. But it's his stripped-down/bare-bones/zero budget videos that wow me. And HELL YEAH, I had the same reaction to that maniac grin shot (also, bare-torso Ren amidst the hanging sheets of plastic, wielding a cleaver), re: Children of the Moon, lol! I'm having difficulty putting to words some thoughts & feelings I'm having about Ren's rap stuff that I've been lukewarm on. Maybe I'm coming around on it? Except it doesn't feel like I'm liking it as *song* and music video? It feels like I'm gaining appreciation for it as some different kind of art form. The genius in the lyrics, his relentless pursuit to understand himself and make sense of the world, and his use of visual imagery (even in a video where I wouldn't say "this is an amazing video!") is combining into a different kind of storytelling for me or something, where I'm enjoying taking it in despite whatever elements aren't appealing to me as *music* So much of the imagery in this one is a direct visual metaphor for things he's going through this year - suffocated by sudden attention after Hi Ren, his mind attacking him with criticism/doubt/etc, his illness always present, the fans (including myself) yammering away about how important his art is (in general, and to individuals' lives) & how it's going to change the world, battling with that thing he's described on a couple of occasions now where he's always thought he was going to change the world... Even if I wouldn't say that as a *film* this impresses me, having those visual images layered over top of the lyrics really ended up taking my breath away. idk. Wish Sam or Josh or Luke had been involved on the video end of things, I guess, although I know Ren's videos come straight from Ren himself. Can't help but wonder what would have come of it had one or more of them been involved in shooting it. idk, maybe it wouldn't have mattered. I will say again, however - I'm very ready for some not-rap to drop (& sounds like I don't have much longer to wait). edit: my list of Ren songs that I don't listen to includes (but is not restricted to) What Went Wrong (1 + 2), Love Music 4, and Loco. Can't stand them, even though I know plenty of other people love them. idk what to say. They actually actively repel me.
I think I get what you mean. I for sure how some films from directors I love that I ended feeling more of a “I don’t know if I love this as a film but I respect the hell out of it as a piece of art”. I would love to see the AU where Sam made this. I might have been the same, it might have been different but I just wanna knooow
@Filmfinds1443 YES! Exactly this, lol. Except the confusing thing here is that I... *don't?* think it's great *filmmaking* art lol? It largely seems more "amateur given money/equipment" than we're used to seeing from Ren & his usual music video collaborators. BUT at the same time, done differently, I think the concepts of the imagery Ren wanted are POTENT pairings for what he's trying to relay about himself/how he's experienced the last year? Is the right filmmaking way of saying that "I think that the video could be really strong conceptually, but missed the mark in execution?"
This feels like a Movie where Ren plays all the characters. Love how he sprinkles bits of his other songs into this too, as well as cultural references. Sending positive healing vibes to Ren - I hear he's had to pause his Treatments in Canada as they're taking too much toll on his body. He's trying natural remedies like an Oxygen Chamber to reduce the inflammation in his body.
Yeah I saw that on Instagram and I hope it ends up being a good choice. He’s certainly had to learn to advocate for himself when it comes to his own health and fingers crossed he’s able to find something that might help
My favorite shot by far is that opening chase when the camera catches Ren. Also how he falls when shot. Both are so abrupt and visceral. You say everyone gets a Ren? I'll take one! I did wonder if you're right when you referred to AI Rens, only because I've heard two videographers describe how to film the shot with multiple Rens - keep the camera still, take the shots and layer them. But maybe you were referring to a different scene? Aaaaaand, this same crew filmed two more videos with Ren.
I think my brain was squishing a bunch of thoughts together 😂 all the rens in the kind of circle was probably just editing, when I said AI I was thinking about the severed head ren but honestly that probably wasn’t even AI it was probably just CG it just for some reason gave me AI vibes. I’ll be really curious to see how those other videos come out! I think maybe the concept for this one didn’t engage me as much as I hoped but it seems like they’re talented dudes
Many of the songs on the Sick Boi album took me multiple listens to fully get on board with, there's just so much to take in. I've listened to this one a lot already and I feel very positively about the song and on the fence about the video
Yep, and there are a few songs on Sick Boi that I *still* don't enjoy! But of course there are far more that I think are some of the best music ever written/brilliant videos, lol.
@@KittyInTheGarden While the official video for Genesis is my favourite, I'm acoustic Animal Flow all the way! Murderer, I can never decide. My fave version of Murderer is "whichever version I listened to last" lol. ... the point of my comment being: I think it's WILD that Ren can give us more than one distinct version of a song and the alternate version is just as brilliant if not more so, for many fans, than the original. And that he's pulled that off on a number of occasions now.
I really enjoyed the switch ups... that Latin reggaton beat thing was neat. I enjoyed the imagery, and I totally get what you're saying about the bigger budget thing... More isn't always better... Reduction of choice in most situations leads to a better product, most of the time. Knowing how much Ren idolizes films, especially Kubrick, I think children of the moon Ren would have done it like this, too. The one thing I have noticed reactors going on and on about, which, after watching your channel I get why you don't mention it... but everyone is like wow he's in such good shape, and i'm like... uh kinda... but that's also a man that cannot eat anything, and of course he's going to be super low body fat, which leads to looking "ripped" don't get me wrong, he DOES look in shape, and working out helps, but it shouldn't be taken as oh he looks fit, so he must be doing better. Anyway, I've been enjoying this song the more I listen to it... and honestly that's most of Ren's songs that have deep lyrics. The only one that I loved from the first opening notes was Seven Sins. the rest had to marinate a bit.
Yeah it fully didn’t occur to me to think it was attractive? I mean I’ve found Ren attractive before in like Money Ties or the War Pigs Big Push stuff but honestly when I see him shirtless here the only thing that ran through my head besides “oh..yeah ok Jesus got it” was “I hope he’s ok, I wish he could eat more kinds of food”
Jess: I know very little about Greek mythology...(nails the Greek mythology) 😂 I hear you about some aspects of the vid. Mainly the bit strapped to the chair giving Children of the Moon vibes (which i didn't love). I'm just not a fan of that intentional over-acting kind of horror. I'm also a massive fan of the guerrilla-filming style. Overall, I liked it though. For me, it's aaall about the song - I freaking love it!!! The piano, the massive bass, the switches, lyrics & story, kit's vocals. Love it. Going on repeat x100 🔥🔥🔥
A lot of my friends know EVERYTHING about Greek mythology so maybe my view on what a little is is slightly warped 😂 I really really liked parts of the songs? Like the opening bit and certain random lines. I feel like it’s one of those songs that’s gonna grow on me slowly like sick boi did. My fav part visually might be the vacuum seal? Cool metaphor, well executed
I love the intense dissection of his inner thoughts on this one. Some cross between extreme journalling and sharing the transcript of a particularly fruitful therapy session.
This is not an instant wow with me. Perhaps it will grow on me? So I can certainly understand your slightly conflicted reaction. I will watch and listen some more. So far it is a bit like "Illest Of Our Time" but without the sense of mischief that that one has. Although this does have the cheeky "Multi-Rens" (your term) Anyway; Keep Reacting!
Many people say about Jesus, which also makes sense, but if we are on the topic of Greek mythology, Prometheus, who was chained, in my opinion is more appropriate.❤
It's deffo a song that grows on you the more you hear it. It's now one of my favourites.
Yeah I’ve spent the last few days listening to it and now I’m kinda obsessed…
I wasn't sure what to think of this when I heard it at SGP, but the sound was out there. I immediately took to this more than Money Ties - that glass breaking sound does something for me.

Appreciate you honesty
Yeah totally with you on this. It does grow on you but wasn't love at first sight/listen. Kit sounds amazing and love the sound of the broken glass.
The broken glass part is really neat. I didn’t fully notice it till a second listen
Really good reaction ❤

I haven’t listened to all of Sick Boi yet but I know Animal Flow took me a few tries to get into and now it’s my fav song to scream/sing in the car 😂
@@Filmfinds1443 for me it's all about the live version when it comes to animal flow! and murderer and genesis for that matter.

Is there anything the man doesn’t do?
