That taxi driver was so honest and felt compelled to warn him about the terrible dangers in that area. But he didn't take him seriously. Most ppl could care less if you're wondering around a bad area as a foreigner. I've traveled dozens of times throughout south America, only once someone sort of warned me that I was in a bad area. I did take it seriously and got out of the area immediately.

They kill, not only rob people just for $20 or your cellphone. As a matter of fact, if you haven't had film this I wouldn't have any idea how that place is. To be honest, it’s just plain stupid. There’s a certain kind of arrogance in what he did. It’s fine to wander around poor districts in Cairo or Shanghai etc, but to wander around similar districts in South America is utterly stupid. The murder rate in dozens of these barrios is HUGE- the highest in the entire world. And they will happily shoot you for your camera or bag. Poverty levels are so awful that a thief will stab you or shoot you for $10. The majority of people are decent and honest, but the risk is still massive. And yet he ignored the advice. Eventually this guy will find himself in a deadly situation just because he wants to make “cool” content. A blonde westerner in a South American slum is asking for trouble.

Kurt, that gentleman at the end comes from provincia “Chimborazo”(The part that was inaudible). It is a region in the center of Ecuador in the sierras surrounded by beautiful volcano & mountain ranges. Most iconic “el taita” or Chimborazo which is a 6000 meter volcano with thousands of years of native history. Beautiful paisaje and even better gente. If you have some time to visit, you should! Would be a great opportunity to share the native culture and hear some Quechua spoken.

If anyone is interested feel free to comment and I can get you in touch with some talented Montañistas to guide to the top. Not for the faint of heart as the hike can be dangerous.

Nah man, it’s dangerous I know a couple people / locals who’ve been victims in Guayaquil. One got mugged at gunpoint while walking to their apartment, and then a taxi driver who tried to jump a female passenger, and a organized robbery from someone walking out from the bank. Does it happen all the time no, but is there high risk of theft and crime, absolutely yes.

I am from Guayaquil when you cross the river you went outside Guayaquil to another city (Durán) I was scared for you because the neigboorhood in Durán was very isolated.. also in Cerro del Carmen, but trust me there are far more dangerous hoods, it was nice to see Cerro del Carmen always wanted to see how it's like. I'm glad you were ok. Coconut juice is so delicious i like it over coconut water. The plantain in the chuzo wasn't hard because it was ripe plantain it's mushier and sweet. My dad's English, mother Peruvian. As a kid I remember him disappearing for hours on walks round the dusty neighborhoods in the backwaters of where her family lived. My relatives would all be panicking and worrying that he'd been robbed or kidnapped, but he always showed up with a story about a nice encounter and a beer with some local he'd had. I really love how you take the time to show off some of the more intimate moments of people working their careers in these countries, whilst surely places like where I live are better off economically the sense of community has all but been destroyed, having Eloy be a barber so well known people in the town tell you to go ask for him by his name is something I feel like my soul hurts for some days. It sucks to lack a community feeling I guess, these people are certainly more rich in spirit.
The communities are more tight-knit, generations of families and everyone knows each other or their relatives in certain areas. So yes people from countries like this may be “poor” when it comes to materialistic items, but they make the best of life and so they are rich with love and live life so genuinely.. its a different type of community you will experience in many third world countries. Something that was lost in first world, or more “developed” countries where societies tend to be more cruel, depending on which “class” you are in on the social ladder.

I recently went to Ecuador solo! Its so cool to see Kurt in the same places I was at. If you avoid the dangerous areas, it's actually a really safe and friendly city
That taxi driver was so honest and felt compelled to warn him about the terrible dangers in that area. But he didn't take him seriously. Most ppl could care less if you're wondering around a bad area as a foreigner. I've traveled dozens of times throughout south America, only once someone sort of warned me that I was in a bad area. I did take it seriously and got out of the area immediately.

They kill, not only rob people just for $20 or your cellphone. As a matter of fact, if you haven't had film this I wouldn't have any idea how that place is. To be honest, it’s just plain stupid. There’s a certain kind of arrogance in what he did. It’s fine to wander around poor districts in Cairo or Shanghai etc, but to wander around similar districts in South America is utterly stupid. The murder rate in dozens of these barrios is HUGE- the highest in the entire world. And they will happily shoot you for your camera or bag. Poverty levels are so awful that a thief will stab you or shoot you for $10. The majority of people are decent and honest, but the risk is still massive. And yet he ignored the advice. Eventually this guy will find himself in a deadly situation just because he wants to make “cool” content. A blonde westerner in a South American slum is asking for trouble.

It is a region in the center of Ecuador in the sierras surrounded by beautiful volcano & mountain ranges. Most iconic “el taita” or Chimborazo which is a 6000 meter volcano with thousands of years of native history. Beautiful paisaje and even better gente. If you have some time to visit, you should! Would be a great opportunity to share the native culture and hear some Quechua spoken.

Nah man, it’s dangerous I know a couple people / locals who’ve been victims in Guayaquil. One got mugged at gunpoint while walking to their apartment, and then a taxi driver who tried to jump a female passenger, and a organized robbery from someone walking out from the bank. Does it happen all the time no, but is there high risk of theft and crime, absolutely yes.

I am from Guayaquil when you cross the river you went outside Guayaquil to another city (Durán) I was scared for you because the neigboorhood in Durán was very isolated.. also in Cerro del Carmen, but trust me there are far more dangerous hoods, it was nice to see Cerro del Carmen always wanted to see how it's like. I'm glad you were ok. Coconut juice is so delicious i like it over coconut water. The plantain in the chuzo wasn't hard because it was ripe plantain it's mushier and sweet. I really love how you take the time to show off some of the more intimate moments of people working their careers in these countries, whilst surely places like where I live are better off economically the sense of community has all but been destroyed, having Eloy be a barber so well known people in the town tell you to go ask for him by his name is something I feel like my soul hurts for some days. So yes people from countries like this may be “poor” when it comes to materialistic items, but they make the best of life and so they are rich with love and live life so genuinely.. its a different type of community you will experience in many third world countries. Something that was lost in first world, or more “developed” countries where societies tend to be more cruel, depending on which “class” you are in on the social ladder.

It’s very true. People in the hood in Guayaquil is dangerous and keep your distance and do not talk to just anyone. If your alone do not go alone unless you know your way or you know someone in the area

When I went to Guayaquil in 2001, i wanted to do something similar to what you did, but the locals warned me so much I became scared and decided to stick to the tourist area which is not that large. The people here seem a lot more reserved. In my country Dominican Republic, people are way more open lol. I seen that when you went there, I’m pretty sure you see that yourself. Great countries either way. It’s crazy how many people warned him about that spot. It must be extremely dangerous in ways we can’t even imagine.

I loved how the neighborhood residents watched over you as if you were their own. You showed hard working people trying to make an honest living under what appears to be difficult economic circumstances. The place wasn't that dangerous and everyone was friendly. Keeping situational awareness is a must everywhere including your bedroom.
He did run into some “dodgy” guys, he said their faces were tattooed and they were shirtless on a corner. But apparently they left him alone though, they were probably shocked that he was just walking through their neighborhood like it was not a big deal. That most likely made them respect him, like “Look at that crazy white guy not giving a shit! He got big balls. Leave him be.” 🤣
