- The basic aikido technique ikkyo done on tanto dori (also called tanken dori), knife attacks, by aikido instructor Stefan Stenudd. Uke was Tomas Ohlsson, 3 dan.
For safety reasons, what is used in tantodori training is a wooden knife.
It should be understood that actual self-defense against knife attacks is extremely difficult, whatever martial art or technique is used. Furthermore, ikkyo might not be the most effective aikido technique against knife attacks, but it is part of the tantodori curriculum.
This is a new edit of a 2003 video posted in 2007:

The quality is vastly improved in the edit, but still far below the level of contemporary videos. I did what I could.
I've written extensively about the ikkyo technique in tantodori here:

Also, I present many other aikido tantodori techniques here:

Thank you for the great short lessons. I had several lessons during 2 summers about 40 years ago (they saved my bacon 3 times by surprise since). Though older now it is yet a viable form of protection. I need to get back into it near me. Again thank you.
The short videos of different variants are great 🙂🎶
Good afternoon Stefan.
Tell you that I love your videos, your style and what one learns. I am a practitioner of Ki Aikido by Koichi Tohei Sensei but I follow your teachings with great interest.
Thank you, 🙏🏻
Exellent technique from tanto good master ;()))
Great acting guys.. thanks for popping up with my feeds.. haha
Next time make it realistic.. have some murderous intent and speed on those knife strikes. I cannot wait to meet an aikido master/practitioner to expose this "martial" art to make them regret practicing this useless non-combat dance choreo.
@boyingmachete3255, you say you "cannot wait," which means you haven't yet even tried aikido. And you want to "expose" it, but hide yourself behind the alias of a Chinese manufacturer. It's impossible to take you seriously.
@@StefanStenudd apply this in MMA please.. address of the McDojo please
@@boyingmachete3255, I don't recall ever seeing MMA involving knives.
@@StefanStenuddhmm.. ok.. apply aikiJOKE in MMA fight.. apply aikidork in escrima/knife fight realistic sparring.
Aikido masters will face reality when experiencing real ground-and-pound on the face. Test yourself bro in real fighting gym.
Waste of time and effort- better invest in the great foundations- boxing, wrestling, bjj, muay thai, judo..
@@boyingmachete3255, you're all over. That tells me you've done none of it.
