    My daughter who is 15 and I found it humorous as we could relate to the events and how they unfolded. I thank you for your apology however it was not needed. May I apologize to you on the behalf of anyone who excoriated you. We here love your channel the content is informative but most importantly it's something that my daughter and I have bonded over even more. We have purchased our own plans to build a roundabout. Thank you so much for the inspiration and please keep the great content going!

    Many years ago each of my four kids, three boys and one girl, would at times assist me in some project. I used to do the same thing you did with your daughter in episode 49 the trim piece would not cooperate! Looking back at those times I realize that I actually taught them some important things that would actually help them in their lives. 1. Rarely does any project go as planned. 2. It's okay to get frustrated it doesn't and even react to the frustration! It was alright to grunt a few expletives, such as "stupid hammer" give the kids a wink and smile while throwing the hammer to the ground, take a deep breath, pick up the hammer and then tell them something like "well, lets try that again and maybe I'll hit the nail straight on this time"! I think you are also teaching you children some very important life lessons as well! Keep up your great work, I really enjoy your channel and I am learning a lot from you!

    I didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary. I am in the midst of building my own boat (first one) and have had many moments of instant frustration when time is of the essence. Very hard to make things look easy and perfect all the time when working in front of a camara. I know that your concern for an appropriate impression of your relationship with your family members is the motive for the apology, but please know that most of us don’t make those kind of judgments. Carry on with the great videos.

    You are a good dad. I am formally trained in family dynamics. So I know what I'm talking about. Your kids are fortunate to have a dad who cares enough to impart standards and creativity to them. My son is 23 now, and a talented musician and all around good person. When he was growing up, people were constantly making comments about me expecting too much of him. In fact, we've always been close and now he thanks me for having high expectations of him. A parent can be both exacting and empathic.

    Honestly people are always going to hate. I really don’t think you did anything any parent has a right to judge you harshly for. Honestly all I saw was a man getting frustrated and restraining any initial, possibly inappropriate verbal outbursts. Not sure if that’s what was going on but honestly man I thought you handled that situation just fine. Don’t sweat the small stuff, it’s complete sh^t that some people thought that you needed to be called out in any way for your reaction to an incredibly frustrating accident. I hope you continue to post your videos. I love when my kids show any interest in my boat so I thought it was awesome that your daughter helped you. I hope you are doing ok I know getting blindsided by that level of criticism can be jarring, I hope to see your next boat building video soon. Thanks for the great content! Keep up the great work!

    Mark, your daughter is of any age that seeing her dad work and get stressed is excellent life skills. You were not rude or in anyway threatening. Life experience for kids is vital. As a dad however of a teenager, you learn to turn such events into opportunities. Next time you have a similar problem, ask her to lead and help. Show her the problem and ask her opinion. She will love it and your praise will lift her. Now enough dad talk, build the damn boat!!!

    It crossed my mind that it could be a bit hard on a young person under those conditions ( you mentioned) I have a daughter and I know in the past I was overbearing at times and caught up in the moment. It’s not my place to assume that is what was going on with you and your daughter. We are who we are and hopefully we can improve as time goes on, kids understand this and know we’re (parents) not perfect. The main goal is to have a healthy relationship for our entire lives. Thanks for sharing your woodworking talents with us!

    Put me in the "there was absolutely nothing wrong with the interaction between you and your daughter" camp, I saw the scene, I saw you make a goofy face at her, and I saw her not be hurt or offended by the frustration you were feeling with the project... it's not anyone's place to decide to be offended, for her, especially when she wasn't.

    The first time I attempted steam bending a 3 metre length using a plastic sleeve, I ended up receiving a bad burn on my foot due to a tear in the plastic. Lessons learnt. 1. Just prior to starting the bend I work my way down the plastic sleeve and where I see hot condensation water pooling, I snip the plastic to allow the water to run out. 2. I wear gum boots when steaming instead of runners. 3. I wear a leather apron that is long enough to cover the top of the gum boots. I find that even though the plastic might have these numerous snips, the steaming process continues effectively.

  • @daniel_charms
    @daniel_charms 3 года назад +1

    Watching the original video, I knew immediately what the comments would be like because on the Internet, if something can be taken the wrong way it _will_ be taken the wrong way and it'll be impossible to convince them otherwise. Think it's mainly because you're just missing so many of the cues that would normally tell you what the other person's intentions were. In this case, I suspect many of those complaining about your tone were simply watching the video with sound off and captions on (just like I was) because with sound off it really did seem like you were gruff and grumpy with her whereas with sound on it's a completely different scene.
    I also suspect calling your daughter your 'reluctant apprentice' really didn't help your case :D Makes it really easy to miss that she would hardly have been the first person you'd call on to help with something you had already messed up once if you had less than complete trust in her, wouldn't she?

    • @Nomadboatbuilding
      @Nomadboatbuilding  3 года назад

      Good observations. Actually I hadn’t considered people watching with sound off but you’re right. I changed the “reluctant conscript” line too. They say the camera doesn’t lie but it does record a different version of what we perceive. When recording intros and such you have to turn yourself up to 11 to make it look anything but flat. It’s a weird thing to get used to and it’s something I noticed when being interviewed for tv a number of times. The interviewer would suddenly change the moment the camera was rolling.

    Hi Mark, as with the previous commenter, I agree the video was fine. Your daughter is a teenager and she knows you well enough by now and probably knows a lot of difficulties involved in what you do. She certainly didn't look to be under any pressure.
    I'm sorry you felt it necessary to apologise to the perpetually offended and explain your home life to the world. A latest example of this stupidity is has been reported that The Globe Theater in London issued trigger warnings and gave the phone number of the Samaritans to people attending the current production of Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet. We certainly didn't get any of that when I had to read it in school. It should possibly had a warning "This may bore the pants off you". I've probably offended some Shakespeare people now.

    I seen the video and I was more annoyed with the comments of the folks who were so critical of you and judging you so quickly. People in this generation get so easily offended over nothing these days. Scripture speaks of the latter days of this very issue coming to pass and unfortunately it is happening in our generation. Jesus said, in Matthew 24:10-12 10 And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another. 11 Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. 12 And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. To me this is one of the most scary scriptures that are being fulfilled in our times. btw Mark, I don't believe you need to apologize for something you didn't do.

    I can understand the reaction to the video. I think it would have been better to jump to the conclusion that the process you were using was fatally flawed, instead of trying to assign fault or rate your daughter’s performance. Kids generally work because they like to. Adults who bend over backward to make the work enjoyable often find that, in time, they have a skilled and willing assistant.

    No offense Marc, I saw you showing your daughter how frustrated you were in a comical way, because your plan failed, no blame was ever directed towards her. It was a creative way as a parent to show our kids life is always about new challenges and overcoming failure its how we grow. So no apology necessary I thought it was good banter and she will probably joke with you about it.

    If they did not see that she was not even remotely distressed they need to get out of their house a bit, walk the dog or just take a break from videos. You could easily hear the tongue in cheek way you were speaking. Don't fret the folks who want to treat your videos as a chance to judge you. Keep doing what your doing.

    I'm so sorry Mark you felt the need to do this and I'm disappointed that some of my fellow viewers made you feel that you should. Your introduction was painful watching you apologize because of the myopic interpretations of a few.

    Humans are a funny breed - not for one second did I think you were harsh on your daughter….at all - in fact you probably taught her a valuable life lesson about being resilient and persistent when faced with a hurdle
    Nothing to see here mark - carry on!

    Everything you say, can and will be used against you. Apologizing has become an expected reaction needed to reinforce the woke-ness that has taken over the world.
    Please do not mention your favorite flavor of ice cream. All hell could break loose.

      Right?! While there is a lot I won’t apologize for, it’s different when it comes to perceived interactions involving my kids.
