Oh man - Benny The Dip. Was living in Hong Kong at the time, 9 nine races at Sha Tin with the Derby shown live as race 10. Had 4 winners on the day and lumped it all on Silver Patriarch.....arrgghh. I may not have learned much but I have lived and only love hurts like this.
Llamtara for me was the most impressive of all Derby winners, it won every race it ran in, and to come from as far back as it did that day on only its 2nd start was seriously good
I had the very good fortune of being at the 1981 Epsom Derby when Shergar won. I had one hundred pounds on to win, which was a week's wages for me. as a bartender in London. Regardless of the money, the hair stood up on the back of my neck when Walter Swinburn, (who happened to be the same age as me on that day), pushed the accelerator on Shergar. I remember people being worried, that Walter Swinburn was too young and inexperienced to win, or that Shergar was too overhyped. Both horse and jockey proved everyone wrong. I was with my father (a Limerick man) that day and remember the day, as if it were yesterday!
Backed Pour Moi, I was on its back then shouted and said to my Mum and sister what the hell is he doing as he past the post. Relieved when showed still on line, lucky boy Barzelona.
Most never won another race. Pour Moi sires Derby winner Wings Of Eagles who strangely won in similar fashion to his father. Both injured after the Derby, retired. A shame, class animals.
Grenville Starkey gave him too much to do in the Derby, made up for it in the king George and then a masterful ride by eddery in the arc, he was my favourite, nijinsky was the best Derby winner in my opinion with shergar a close 2nd, jim O'Connell
@@jimoconnell9870 dancing brave what a horse and probably the best ride given to an arc winner by the great and sadly missed pat eddery still cant believe el gran senor got beat in the derby still gutted to this day

Still heartbreaking seeing dancing brave lose
Everytime cousin Everytime!.
Shergar the wonder horse gone never to be forgotten
I was at the Derby in 2011. I’m going again this year and strangely Stoute has the favourite again. Can’t wait!
Pour Moi was the first derby I ever watched and had a bet on. Backed Pour Moi that day at random and have loved racing ever since.
I was so surprised you did not show Benny the Dips or Lamtarras Derbys both really quality races, really gritty!!

Embarrassing List With No King 👑 Lester 👑👌🤣
What was Dramatic about Serpentine? Looked a fix to me
Benny the dip must have been one of the most dramatic derbies ever.Silver patriarch led just before and after the line but not on it.

He rode him to victory in the Eclipse afrerwards. He then was injured and replaced by Pat Eddery who then kept the ride.
