Serving does not automatically grant citizenship but you would be able to apply for it after enlistment (or possibly during if you had a long career). It is one of the pathways to legal immigration.
I will tell you I served with many of those guys that were fighting to get their citizenship and they were very unhappy with people crossing the border illegally. This made it even harder for them to get their own citizenship. People that try to do the right thing are always hurt by the ones that try to do it illegally.

These appear to be separate issues to me. Letting EVERYONE in without vetting vs protecting the country and it people with a thoughtful policy is the issue. Mel has always been pretty interested in and connected to politics. Back when he was younger and still living here in Australia he often appeared on TV offering political commentary, political analysis is an interest he has always had. After the acting promotion was done the TV commentators would often ask Mel for his take on a current situation. He has surprising and intelligent insight at times too, he's worth paying attention to. He's no dummy. It's also a bit comical that you'd make that comment about actors given a couple of Presidents have come from the entertainment business, as have many other American politicians - Clint Eastwood and Arnold Schwarzenegger just to name a couple. If Mel were to suddenly announce he was going into politics the world could do a lot worse. He's a darn sight more intelligent and has far better political knowledge at his disposal than that idiot in the Whitehouse currently. If you serve this country in the form of the armed service's, there is fast track to citizenship (its about 1 1/2 years). I served with lot of people who used this rule to become citizens. But it's up to them to study and take the test. Its not for free. You still have to earn it.

Mel has always been pretty interested in and connected to politics. Back when he was younger and still living here in Australia he often appeared on TV offering political commentary, political analysis is an interest he has always had. After the acting promotion was done the TV commentators would often ask Mel for his take on a current situation. He has surprising and intelligent insight at times too, he's worth paying attention to. He's no dummy. It's also a bit comical that you'd make that comment about actors given a couple of Presidents have come from the entertainment business, as have many other American politicians - Clint Eastwood and Arnold Schwarzenegger just to name a couple. If Mel were to suddenly announce he was going into politics the world could do a lot worse. He's a darn sight more intelligent and has far better political knowledge at his disposal than that idiot in the Whitehouse currently.

If you serve this country in the form of the armed service's, there is fast track to citizenship (its about 1 1/2 years). I served with lot of people who used this rule to become citizens. But it's up to them to study and take the test. Its not for free. You still have to earn it.

For the record; the huge Latino population he speaks about in the military, most of them join the Marine Corps, and the vast majority of the Marine Corps votes red. Most of the Hispanics I’ve talked to in the military have a sense of logic and understand that the wall doesn’t in fact keep out legal immigrants, but the ILLEGAL kind. Key point here.
A wall or "the wall" doesn't keep out illegal immigrants, not to any great degree. There is plenty of "fencing" along the boarder -- infra-red sensory devices, patrols, actual fences, boats, air patrols, etc. -- and people still get across. Donald Trump played to the miserable anti-immigrationalist ignorance and bias Americans (though certainly not all) have ALWAYS had, because that's how he was raised. Dog-whistling to racists gets you votes and, as events have shown, gets you insurrectionists as well.
Most everything wrong with his presidency, like the wall, makes him what he was from the beginning -- a useful idiot to Vladimir Putin. The wall idea was one of the first indications of it.
