And he was absent from the Kennedy Center Honors for the same reason and for the fact that he would have had to pay homage to people not named donald trump, a task that would be beneath him.

Trevor Noah was outstanding when he did this. Colin held his own. Tough crowd.

That crowd seemed to be terrified of laughing. Weird.
The crowd seemed nervous to me. It was weird. Colin should have said something like ‘oh come ON that was funny’ might have broken the ice.
His delivery is not as good as Noah's. His timing is way too slow -- as if he's checking the audience to see if he should proceed.

Trump scowled at his White House dinner, both Obama and Biden laughed and didn't take the jokes about them seriously. Biden is a decent caring man. I will happily vote for him again. Jost did a great job.

It was actually one of these Correspondents Dinners that started Trump on his political career. When Obama was POTUS, he made some jokes at Trump's expense, who was there in the audience. The rest is history.

I didn't realize he was this funny and if a joke ever falls flat he can certainly fall back on his charm. He's got some wickedly killer deadpan looks and perfectly timed pauses and reflective looks at the audience. Pretty potent combo especially when he can finish with such incredibly heartfelt authenticity that can bring a tear to your eye. That's one talented comedian and definitely worthy of the standing ovation.
And on behalf of all decent people on the planet, a big thank you to Lara Trump, for not turning her face toward the camera!

Most of the jokes weren't that good, tbh - no Colbert, that's for sure. Though the few that were funny also got an indifferent reaction from that crowd. Jost's line about there being "incredible journalists here tonight, and a few credible ones" (or something to that effect) was a pretty amusing dig that got a predictably stony reaction from the audience.
There were a lot of honest to goodness enemies in that crowd.

Did you watch the same 23 minutes. He was dying ... if that means killing it. Long awkward silences are not a key part of great comedy. I like Biden .. I like SNL Update .. I can recognize a weak response when I hear one.

Really swingy speech. Some jokes were great, some of them were bombing. Some of those weren’t good, but some would have been good if they weren’t too depressingly accurate.

I think Jost didn't do well in this format. It also felt like he was kind of kid gloves. Some of the best corresponence dinner speeches I've seen were savage.
Colin Jost is a brilliant satirical comedian who pauses after every comment to let the satire sink in. Unfortunately, most in that room can't relate to satirical humor; he's too smart for them.

As a sound guy, it always bothers me that don’t hang any (or enough) crowd microphones when producing this event. You only pick up the audience reactions from the host mic, and it just makes the event sound rather dead, or that the host isn’t getting any laughs.
Yeah, I know it’s not a comedy special, but Colin was getting a much more positive response than it sounds like here. And every year, for that matter.
I used to do hotel AV conference tech setups for a national company 35+ years ago. Placing microphones on the ceiling was a very expensive option. Then the fancier hotel conference rooms started installing speakers and microphones in the walls and ceilings in discreet housings matching the decor. You still have to rent that system, and amplifiers, mixers, etc. The cost of the equipment, tech, and final recording copies even back then was pretty significant cost. I'm guessing they opted to focus on the speech content and keeping costs down.

Good take on the room acoustics. I don’t think anyone in the room wants to be caught on a “hot mic.” Although, I would have laughed at Lara Trump’s comments on all the trump jokes. She made a video of herself twirling around her hotel room, thinking this dinner was at MarALargo. Scarlet’s husband did a great job, I’m sure Doug would agree.

Colin was on point. Most of the crowd didn't get his jokes; they had to think about it for another second, to catch on, then it was too late to applaud.
That is what his press agent is going to say. Blame the audience !!!! He was dying up there. The 4 or 5 good lines fared no better.

I just watched this on the NBC News app and it seemed like such a bomb that I decided to check out the comments about it on RUclips, but here they are all so positive and even saying Jost needs his own talk show. I don't get it. The jokes were so mild and the timing was too slow and very awkward.
I'm sure the fact that traditional journalism is becoming a relic has something to do with it. Here we are on RUclips most the time.
