The dissonance brought in on the second verse is far and away my favorite part in both the studio and Mahogany performances. It stands out all the more because of how straightforward the first half of the song is. I really can't get over how much I love this song

I think you would love Chris Thile's other bands. Nickle Creek, where he started about 8 years old. Listen to the Smoothie Song, Lighthouse Tale, or Celebrants. Punch Brothers check out Motion and Location or Julep. Goat Rodeo with Yoyo Ma, try Attaboy or Less is Moi.

I saw Chris Thile (Till-lay) perform recently with the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center. Good musician? No, extraordinary - so much so that he was awarded a McArthur Genius Grant prize. I think he used that money to construct the narrated show he did there for "Orchestra and Extroverted Mandolinist". He's played folk and bluegrass music with a couple of premiere groups but as also teamed up with Yo Yo ma and other classical musicians because he can play Bach just as well as he can play Bob Dylan. Probably the best mandolinist around. Child prodigy. Good upper range singer too. He and Jacob did an improvised set at some NYC jazz club. Google him.
Madison Cunningham also has a unique guitar sound and tuning which is lower and with the intervals a cellist might use. Very nice folk rock stuff. Solid voice.
This song is on DJesse Vol 4 and although with an orchestra it's not radically different than the Mahogany version. Just more lush and a little dissonant.
Hopefully you've seen the live version of Bridge Over Troubled Waters in L.A. two weeks ago with Tori Kelly and John Legend, who I also happened to see the other night at Wolf Trap. His version is with a large gospel choir.
The recent song I nominate for a reaction is a "A Rock Somewhere" which has sitar (Ravi Shankar's grandduaghter?) and raga style singing.

Some may not like his voice too much, but it's pitch perfect, his range is huge, his control is excellent, he can harmonise complex vocals effortlessly. As a matter of fact, as a child, he scored the highest score in standard national tests in the UK for voice. He received the ABRSM Gold Medal for the highest mark in the country for his grade eight singing result in 2008. Probably knocked the examiners socks off! I think he was 14....

This has a folk/urban sound. Sounds like it was composed lying in a field of wild flowers. Very different.

Is this an original- brilliant. Love his originality. And the lyrics (writer so overly focus on these😊) Absolutely beautiful. Great emotional intelligence in performance and the way it’s composed if it is an original. Assuming it is by your remarks on him and his style.

Hi Larry. I was one of those who said Linkin Park was helpful for kids with depression. Don't analyze it from an adult point of view. Sometimes teens just want a non judgemental partner in their pain. Linkin Park is that partner. No judging their feelings and no offer of a solution. Just some commiserating for a bit. Apologies for posting this in the wrong spot. My wife used to tell me that sometimes when she was depressed she just wanted a hand to hold and not a solution from me.

I saw something where Jacob said he doesn’t think there are any wrong notes in music. A lot of times the things he does sound “off” to the normal ear because it’s not what we’re used to hearing, yet it also somehow works. And I agree about his voice. He’s not the best vocalist, and doesn’t try or claim to be, but he obv knows how to sing for what he needs.

To piggyback on @brianleggo3489's comment, Chris Thile is in two amazing progressive bluegrass groups, Nickel Creek and The Punch Brothers. Like Jacob he is a musical tour de force who blows my mind every time I listen to his music.

Oh, also there's also this version with Dodie. The best song from this PBS show was Wild Mountain Thyme one with an audience choir. As I understand it, he was added at the last moment to join Dodie and Laufey. Have you ever reacted to her? Biggest jazz star on the planet right now, although she's arguably really not jazz.
