No. This is just a trojan horse for American leftists. It's these people who are the real racists because their entire world view revolves around it. Have you read and heard what they think of black people? American lefists actually believe that black people cannot figure out for themselves how to get a voter's ID or how to use a computer. Why? Well, because according to American leftists white people are so absurdly powerful and just by white people existing black people are incapable of doing anything. And their solution to this "problem"? White people. Yes, black people cannot live a proper life because of white people and yet at the same time it is only white people who can save black people. When these people call others racist they are just projecting their own ideas unto others.
Yes. One of the characters literally has a Nigerian name, doesn't look Nigerian at all. They basically said "we're stuffing all the POC cultures here, without the umm... POC" xD
@@damianadivine4368 Your entire world view revolves around race and you call other people racist? What about canonically white characters being race swapped? Is that Ok to you?
No. Identity politics is a thing only in the West. Imagine if people in China asked American companies to make games based on their politics / ideologies 😅
The weirdest thing is how NPCs have varied skin colors, but the gacha characters barely... Just look at Lunja, it's not like Hoyoverse doesn't know how to put darkskin in the game, so why not on the pullable characters too?
No because if its just skin color its that simple, but we all know its not just that, DEI goal is litterally to include everyone, look at the sample of representation, does any of the liyue male characters look like Samo Hung? isnt funny that no one is fighiting for chinese people, if they wanted hoyo to correctly use RACIALLY CORRECT REPRESENTATION (I dont know how many times I am saying this, culture and race are different), then they should first push mihoyo to do that, because its their game, but we all know someone who looks like zhongli will sell more vs someone who looks like ken jeong, now were back to "wait but one is real person and one is fiction" see how that turns back around? now you might say, well we'll use animated black character, then look at barret of final fantasy, he is baddass, but do you think he'll fit in genshin? maybe, will he sell? yeah goodluck with that, do not forget cloud is the main character not barrett, so ok well use a different style, which one ? boondocks? why would hoyo risk doing that when a litteral example just happened called concord, I understand people want to feel included but why force a company that has no problem on their own part? remember us asians are all not light skinned, and we definitely do not look like zhongli. I wish bro.
It's not weird. It's classic East Asian classism. In countries like China darker skin tone is treated as an indicator of lower social and economic class. Chinese players don't want to play characters they consider country bumpkins.

I don't usually care about character skin color but it seems odd that they copy the culture for South America and Africa but hen don't copy the skin colors is strange to say the least. Some people bring up the tan as dark skin but I think some people are confused by what is considered dark skin. It also can't really be said that it's a gacha so it doesn't have black characters because Nikke, girls frontline, FEH, Fate go, etc have dark skin characters. I'm not saying everyone from Natlan needs to be some like fate Nitocris complexation but when no one is it can feel off, and some people will take it as a racist thing. And as for people who say they don't care then what would be wrong with just making them black?
Its NOT BASED OFF SOUTH AMERICA!!! it's based off Australia! There are NO dudgeridoos in south america!!! It's an Australian instrument. You know, the land down under? You never heard of the "outback"? Mmk, do me a favor and rewatch the trailer for Natlan with Miss Kangaroo Girl and listen to the opening music. It's CLEARLY a didgeridoo. And then look at the most recent trailer. Is Miss Great White Shark Surfer Gal NOT standing in front of a building that oddly resembles the Sydney Opera House?! Now where in the world do we see LOTS of white surfers and sharks? Umm.... could it be... the great barrier reef? Hmm? Yes, there are some in Africa but it's NOT what Africa is known for. If hoyoverse was doing Africa, where's the savannahs? The safaris? Or south america, where's the Amazon rainforest? The Andes? The incan and Aztec temples like INDIANA JONES STYLE?! they WOULD HAVE advertised that. But they didn't. You know why? Because Natlan is from the land of the CROCODILE HUNTER!

This would be true if they hadn't started the silent treatment with Genshin Impact for 5 hours, literally the longest silence, no content being produced about the game
Anyone saying "oh its just a work of fiction they don't have to base it on reality" really need to evaluate the content in the game thus far and realise that adding people of colour into a fictional reality isn't that big of an ask. It's not woke. It's not political. It's strange to adamantly avoid creating characters of colour, it's very telling. In a world where a man can be born with blue hair and purple eyes, I don't think darker skin is that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things.
They might as well say "Anime is supposed to be a perfect world to escape to, adding black people to that world kind of defeats the point.", that's what they insinuate.
People always excusing that its a game or fiction forget that they literally had Yunjin, a bibically ACCURATE representation and depiction of Chinese Opera and Culture. And you dare to say the game does not have relations to real world inspiration? Hypocrites and racists.
It is obvious that they are going to want to show a character that represents a part of their culture, the same thing Americans do in Hollywood movies, I don't see the problem
Ok and? It was never directly stated yunjin is “chinese opera” as it is “liyue opera.” Game devs can reference as much or as little real world things in their fictional world. Cry about it.
@crashphoenix6362 i mean, it is Chinese opera and meant to be this. They kept the Chinese song for every dub and i do think they already have talk about yunjin as an homage of Chinese opera (it was maybe in a live?? Like they explained what it is idk). Tbh I have seen many people argue about the skin colour of the new region characters and I personally don't think skin tone colour would count as representing ones culture. (Like search it up many online result would tell you that skin tone is NOT apart of ones culture) Now one can argue well why don't skin tone count as apart of the culture? Well the main reason it won't count would be,because in some culture people would have like the same skin tone, but their culture would have literally NOTHING in common😅 Then what is the meaning of Culture? Well it means -the tradition -the design of their traditional clothings -the building in that the culture own So I don't see why the whole community is arguing about something that everyone should know before they start or at least should have done some research about it? (Plus Idk but I feel like some people don't even play genshin here they just wanted to join a argumentor something?) But in all fairness it's only my opinion😅
In my humble opinion as a POC, it really doesn't matter. Genshin's world isn't realistic, and it probably never will be. It's an rpg open world fantasy game with its own rules and laws that we don't get a say in. Games like Overwatch are based on OUR world in the future, so inclusiveness is integral to make the game feel like it's realistic and really our planet 30 or whatever years into the future. I'm really sorry about the lack of black people in a Chinese game but if it bothers you that much, you're better off finding another game to play because this isn't the one for you and it probably never will be. Also, side note: A lot of the "POC defenders/advocates" are honestly not helpful at all, and honestly, just come off as weirdly racist like when they edit a character's skin-tone to be black and claim they look "better" or "should look like that". I'm sorry, but you won't fix racism by being racist/colourist
I just gonna be real, the consensus of majority of players are not aligned with the consensus with Twitter. Since the RUclips Natlan trailer never got the same treatment how everyone treating Assassins Creed Shadows. It is basically Sumeru all over again. Most players don't really care much thing like this in a pure fantasy game. So I kind of felt social media are mad over nothing. lol
You can break it down mathematically. Take the largest amount of likes you see that are unlikely to be botted, subtract a bit because tons of these people admit they have multiple accounts to fluff numbers, subtract more from those who only like things because someone they follow posted (if you want, I didn't when I did percentages), and then divide it by the monthly players of 65 million. You get like 0.06% And that number is likely lower as plenty of these people don't form opinions themselves and just parrot stuff until they see the next "issue."
So funny how so many people think they fighting racism but they are showing THEY are the racist ones, implying that all mexicans have dark skins, lmao. Why the fk are people asking a CN creator to create none-CN art style characters? They portrayed their understanding of the western/African culture and thats it. Didn’t western media always make wrong portray about CN culture? Where are these cry babies then?

If you want accurate region characters then let’s do this… Ayato, Ayaka and Kokomi need to have black hair… when have you seen naturally light blue/ white young haired characters native to Japan? This also applies to Kazuha and Ningguang (yeah I know she is from Liyue) … unless they are albino this should not exist in that region. Yoimiya should not be native to Inazuma… she is blond, which means that all of her family should mostly have black hair if they are native to Inazuma. Xinyan and Kaeya need to be white skin since one is from a Chinese region and the other one is from a region that has no sunlight. Eula cannot have blue hair.. she needs to have blond or brown hair. Chongyun has to have black hair unless they have explained that his hair turned white due to his abilities (haven’t done his companion quest) Cyno cannot have white hair… it has to be black hair…. Unless he has early gray hair or like Chongyun changed color due to his abilities. You see my point… it’s a game it’s not going to be completely accurate to the region… Would I love more people with color skin, yes… but again it’s being blown out Of proportion… Edit: let’s also add to the fact that most of the characters have perfect bodies with no excess of fat in them… yeah these characters are fictional it’s not going to be accurate most of the time…
Genshin is a fantasy open world game so obviously it’s gonna have some fantasy elements in there like multi colored hair, characters in the game can control the elements/ have magical abilities, etc. The problem is that this game takes some inspiration from real world places and cultures shown by various locations, names and items used in the game and so far has been incorporated well into the game but Natlan out of all the regions have to be the most inaccurate and its offending a lot of people who’s culture is supposed to be represented in this new region especially when the other regions have been done so well. So Hoyoverse couldn’t just make the characters a bit more accurate to the real world since the game is heavily inspired by it.
You do realize blasians exist? Plus, no one is talking about hair color. No one would care if they added a dark skinned character with multi color hair.

Genshins map design is very clearly based off of real life places. Monstadt - Germany and central europe Inazuma - Japan etc And nobody complained about race there because its just another gacha anime game under a chinese company. But when you have middle east and african inspirations then obviously you need to change it up Hsr doesnt need to because it doesnt really reflect real world countries. Just to clarify if a game does not have areas that are specifically based on places where black and brown people exist then it’s not that no one cares it’s a little thing called ✨race consistency✨. If there was a region based on an Asian or European culture and they made a majority of the cast clearly dark skinned this is just as offensive as taking a culture with majority people as dark skin and limiting the skin color to say the loli characters or just purposely making them weaker than the much more “superior” light skin characters

I don’t really care about character skin colors in video games, it’s more about what’s in their hearts and their overall personalities. Skin shouldn’t matter. I think whatever you want to do wont affect hoyo's decision by now. Their character design is already finalized. I am not an art expert, but simply changing their skin tone to like Iansan is just horrible decision if they do it. Their color wont match with their outfit. Well I'd like to see how far this drama goes. How will those drama farming CCs will react etc
Genshin is the biggest game there is rn and one of the most influential. If they can make Yun Jin be the love letter to Chinese opera, the can give the same respect to Sumeru and Natlan. We know it's just a game, but when that games business model is influencing other games/fans to follow its steps its starting to hurt people irl. Especially big genshin fans who are starting to hurl insults towards poc. Calling us dramatic when we see our culture being disrespected. It's a slap to the face especially when it's been more than 3yrs
As an POC, Genshin has no responsibilities for how its own fanbase acts on the internet. That responsibility is on you and everyone's that acts immature about this. Second, I don’t want you talking for me when I am not bother by any of the character designs. This is an 100% fictional world that is not based on real life whatsoever. They do take inspiration from other culture yes, but they do not need to represent that culture's "skintones" 100% when they don’t have to. Its not important for the game nor is it important for majority of the people playing this game. Please realize that this stuff does not matter to alot of people, included the chinese players who the actual main audiences.
Let me play devil's advocate. If they did dark skin characters, some people would still call Hoyo racist. And if Hoyo hires Chinese voice actors to play these dark skin characters. Some people would scream "black face".
you all would lose your mind when you found out that if you search Nero Claudius an Anime girl pops out, just because they based something on another thing, it doesn't mean it's suddenly the end-all be-all representation of what it is, i hate to defend Hoyo, but they are not obligated to make a "representation" as you all like to call it 1:1 to stuff they base on, if you want that, go watch a documentary take it from fgo, a game based from various myths and cultures but they still let the artist do their thing in designing the characters because, i know this is a foreign concept, they are FICTIONAL. i as Indonesian would have never known historical or mythological figures like Bradamante, one of Charlamagne's Paladins, the Trung sisters from the Vietnamese military leaders, or even the joke about Queen medb's death was due to cheese rolling on top of her of course they have a different design in-game than they do in source material, what do i do about it? go and look up the damn thing, differentiate between them, realize they're just fiction
It's wild how developers have to remind players that genshin is fictional and none of the characters are real people. Mind virus is spreading like a wildfire on X.
They should probably not base their characters on real deities dark skin tones and make them tan Like these natlan characters are just tan I don't think it matters if they go for world designs and architecture but actual things from culture is strange Aside from that nobody seems to complain that the regions don't have differences with how characters or Npcs speak there's barely a difference they don't have accents
I have Mexican blood but have very light skin. I hope people remember that there are light skin Hispanics and Africans too. I feel like those people are just forgotten, so that's kinda a problem, so that kind of makes problems in both parties: Genshin not making enough darker skin playable characters. And fans forgetting that some of the people they are talking about have lighter skin too while being upset and talking about it on Twitter (or X) and IG, etc. And I know this because I have seen so many comments of the people talking about Natlan suggesting that these people (Hispanics and Africans) don't have light skin. Edit: Forgot to say that this isn't me defending the devs. I'm annoyed, too. I'm just pointing out problems of both sides of this. There's a lot of people that put people in bubbles and have a set appearance for them (most of the time, it's that everyone in a certain race would look the same, this skin color, that hair color or style etc.) and to these people if you don't look like their ideal appearance for a race, you aren't that race. That's not only disrespectful but flat-out racist. This is one thing a light skin nonwhite Hispanic or African might think when people say things like "they are whitewashed," or "why are they white?" Or "at least he/she isn't white," but to others, it might be hurtful, and they might think that something is wrong with them because they have lighter skin.
Its been almost 5 years, they only have 5 "dark skinned" character and they barely even cover the normal shade of tan. Are we really wanting just ONE dark skin character every 365 days?
Lighter skin individuals of Mesoamerica, subsaharan Africa are nowhere as pale skinned as european or east asian phenotype. A lot of people non pale white look deep beige. But it doesn't have to be 'pick one over the other' just because certain portion is in fact paler than rest of population.
As someone who’s born in South America which I’m half white & Latino, I accept the designs a few countries here has people who have white skin colour even though they’re Spanish. Plus I think the meaning of racism of how I see it, is hatred towards your own species in the animal kingdom which is human it’s not about skin colour at all.
That is the correct response. The developers can make their game and design their characters as they see fit. It's their game. Their creative vision. If people don't like it they can just play another game, or make their own game. No one is stopping anyone from making their own game.
@@HackerCow-wac8 I stopped playing Genshin as well. I just don't like it when people try to force their idea of how things should be unto others. Yes, there are distinctly aboriginal elements at play in Natlan. But two of the characters are named after African gods, at least two are named after Mayan/Mexica deities, at least one is named after a Native American Spirit, and the Archon is named after a Māori goddess. Also we got battle music with Yoruba singing and tango/carinosa influences so saying they aren’t present is blindingly false. They are pulling from Africa and the ENTIRE Ring of Fire and while the lack of discussion surrounding Australia’s distinct influences is warranted to point out, it is not the sole influence being extracted to build Natlan.

Bruh who cares. It is a fictional game and fictional characters. Game devs don’t have the obligation to make what they reference 100% accurate. It is a work of fiction and if that angers you, you need to go outside and touch some grass or something.
Why is "it's fiction" an argument here? I don't understand. Is fiction just for light people? Why is having darker skin in a world where blue hair and purple eyes exist so outlandish?
@@IamEL1979 because most people who argue that genshin needs more “representation” don’t know the difference between real life and fiction. They argue that natlan is suppose to be an accurate representation of africa or latin america yet not once did hoyoverse ever advertise their game as accurate to any real world nation. It’s fiction, that is what they said.
@@IamEL1979 lemme do you one more, why does hoyoverse need to cater to you, when they made it dead clear it is completely fiction and not suppose to be and accurate representative of any real world cultures/nation and it is their work, not yours. They don’t care about DEI, cry about it. Another thing, why is this movement even important. Sumeru’s drama is forgotten and dead as soon as sumeru dropped, and nothing was lost or gained from the movement failing, so why exactly is it important to complain about the skin color of literal pixels on a screen. You want to fight actual racism, maybe go tackle something in reality first.
@@crashphoenix6362 Why is it such a big deal to make a character any colour but pale? What exactly makes that seem outlandish to you. Also, they profit from us. If they want to continue doing so, they should at least take our criticisms seriously. That doesn't mean do it, they won't. But at least try to see why people are upset. Also, "accurate representative of any real-world cultures/nation" people of colour exist everywhere. These characters are based on the real world because they are human. They have shown people of colour exist in the world, that is an aspect of their fictional world that has been established. So yes, the "it's just fictional" is a bullshit excuse. Fiction is reflective of its creators, and people don't like what the creators are looking like right now.

The people complaining about Genshin whitewashing their characters are also the ones praising Assassins Creed Shadows for finding the only black man in Japanese (made up) history and deciding to base a game around him.
In my honest opinion, no, I don’t think it’s racist. Let me explain. Natlan is a fantasy nation, and only takes inspiration from Central and South America. It’s not a 1 to 1. In this aspect, Hoyo can do as they please. Natlan isn’t real. The characters aren’t real. Hoyo can do as they please in this regard. And if people don’t like it, there are two options. One, stop playing Genshin. Two, make your own game with your own characters. And even if people do speak up about it, Hoyo won’t change a thing. People have been complaining about quality of life and rewards, and Hoyo still hasn’t changed a damn thing from day 1. And anything they did change was lack luster at best. If Hoyo does change things, that’s fine. But I doubt anything will happen.
Yeah but the thing is they wanna go all out with their Chinese Characters and Japanese characters but wanna give low effort to sumeru and Nathan chars. Ofc people coming from that culture are gonna be offended due to how they were represented in game.
@@2k3dWdym low effort to Sumeru and Natlan characters? Low effort how?? From what I’ve heard, Nilou and Dori’s outfits are accurate to their inspiration, namely Persian and Turkish outfits I think. Making a character Al-Haitham, who is scholarly, is a neat nod to Ibn Al Haitham. Knowing those sorts of things would take research, not really low effort. Lots of Sumeru characters are also well written and well developed, like Faruzan, Cyno, Nahida, etc. Sumeru as a region has the most amount of world quests and the ones with the best stories and best npcs. And how are Natlan characters low effort? We’ve only gotten one teaser trailer, so don’t jump to such quick conclusions. And why would Hoyo, if they are a biased Chinese company, favours the Japanese region when China and Japan have historic tension, and current political tension. If anything, they’d want to represent Japan in a negative light, if they had this pro-CCP, pro-China narrative.
@stormer2349 I meant skin color buddy. A lot of people thought there should've been more darker characters. I agree. And they represented Japan and China really well but in Natlan, we got a boy who looks like a tetris block. Wtf lol
My big thing is that people forget about how good hoyo does with the cultural aspects of the nations like the music, dances, regions. Ya sure they could of made most characters darker but it’s a video game other aspects of the culture will be fantastic. Skin color is only a small part of a culture to me. 😊
@@Dojafish but why do we have to seperate the world by peoples color of skin. All people are and should be people the only thing that differs between us is the cultures we live in. Ik it's my opinion but I just really don't get why we have to seperate or judge people or designs by their color of skin. That should have no affect. The only character I think should HAVE TO BE dark is Ororon since he is actually BASED on a Real diety who is dark. I could see a judgment for Murata since she is the god of NATLAN.
@@gardevoirmaster5743 then why exclude people and only allow white ones be in the game? Why take away the people who made these cultures away? Do you realize how racist it is?
Honestly, it’s just so startling when they base a character (Mavuika) off of a Maori diety (I could be wrong on the reference being a diety, as I am Aussie and know pretty little about Kiwi culture) but then made them pale af and didn’t even try to give them Maori tattoos or anything else exceedingly linked to it. I understand Australia and New Zealand’s history with… well, everything… “blac” is a term among Aboriginal people for a reason, so I wouldn’t mind her being lightskinned or tanned but white, however I do have a problem with her being as pale as the sun-dried orange a plant pot I made for my mother is Also didgeridoos are an Australian instrument, specifically Aboriginal. They aren’t from anywhere else. Didgeridoos are also a male-only instrument (I won’t go into the reasoning as my understanding of Aboriginal culture is looser than most, though it’s still better than *some*) and there are also instruments that women mainly use (idk if they are regulated to women-only, however). Anyway, I find it upsetting that, outside of Australian’s without big platforms, nobody is talking about the Australian and New Zealand influences that are pulled from Aboriginal and Maori culture (and especially the ways they mishandled it like with Mavuika)
It doesn’t matter and it should not matter period. If a characters going to represent the background of what the region is supposed to be and it look like the characters they shown are representing the region as a whole . This crap of oh these characters are not representative the core of there nation because there white not dark skin? It the world of anime.
Well, to be honest, I wouldn’t pull for the characters if they are black But if they are doing a dark skin or black inspired region then they should make them black .

Hoyoverse literally put the name of an orisha on a white character (orishas are black gods from some African-based religions). Don't you think that's disrespectful?
Maybe they should add a coloured character with a good kid, meanwhile updating other coloured character's kits. Other than that, this shouldn't be made a political issue, its just absurd and cringe. Its barely a game.
Tbh if they did do changes to the skin colour I would’ve hope they could put a little tan on them just like xilonen But I’m not sure if they are gonna do that cuz they already have a full trailer so the chances could be pretty low 😢
Fiction is one of the best means of establishing and perpetuating biases and prejudices, which cause discrimination, it is also a perfect way to rewrite history in favor of the government in power.
Unfortunately there is still major racism in their culture, but we are slowly pushing them to become better. Though it'll take time to change a whole culture
I personally don't don't care about the skin tone of a characters. As long as their culture is being shown and represented properly. That's good enough for me. Also this is a fictional game in a fictional setting inspired by real culture, so of course it's not gonna be a 100% accurate to the inspiration. And as long as the characters are hot. I'll roll. Also Culture isn't always the skin colour of the people. It's the music, the traditions, the clothes, the sports.
Well, little mermaid's Ariel was already an established character long ago before her character got race-swapped. If anything, it is a lazy lousy disney move as they could've just made another disney princess of color but it takes creativity (which Disney no longer possesses) to make one. Upcoming genshin characters have just been created carrying their own brand new set of aesthetics and were not a race-swap of an existing character.
@@どーくん-j2zNo, even worse. The Little Mermaid is based on a Danish fairytale, so they are literally changing the skincolor of an existing character that is from a movie that itself is based on a fairytale (I don't think it's a 1-1, but definitely moreso based on than inspired, especially since the name is the same). For Genshin, they are new characters who are simply named AFTER certain characters, but people get mad because they don't look like whoever they were named after... But the thing is, there are TONS of popular real life names that are named after characters from religions, mythologies, etc... But I don't see people complaining about those, however the MOMENT it's in a fictinal setting, then characters suddenly need to be accurate to whoever they're named after. It'd be one thing if they actually were said characters, but they aren't... They're merely named after them. Although, this is all just my opinion. Anyone is obviously free to disagree (I just ask that anyone who does disagree, at least tries to stay respectful and civil. The thing is, Mihoyo is losing trust. Starting with issues within game mechanics and quality-of-life changes that were desperately wanted by players for years and only provided this year after (alleged) competition. They were asked over and over again to improve their game, but they either didn't or applied criticism to Honkai instead. And again, it seemed to take ANOTHER GAME (honestly, much better mechanics, gacha system, and quality of life all around) for them to make these changes. Then there is this issue. Mihoyo isn't known for valuing its player base. Knowing it wants to reach out globally but is unwilling to realise that the blatant colourism they have shown isn't tolerated outside of CN is just another nail in the coffin. The fact they are unwilling to expand their worldview (or at least make consideration of it) at the request of their audience and just write off the concerns with "it's fiction we don't have to cater to you because we don't want to" is just disappointingly in character for them. I personally see this as a tired fanbase coming to terms with the fact their concerns and criticisms aren't actually valued by Hoyoverse, obviously some more than others. If they want to fix this they need to make an effort to value their player base and address these criticisms maturely and openly. People only tolerate bullshit for so long after all.
Your first paragraph is correct but... About race. As a matter of fact i think even outside of CN not a lot of GI players care about such issues and going to continue paying money to Hoyoverse, most of them just play the game. And as a company that is focused on entertainment industry (The industry that is 100% about profif) they care most about revenue, not race representation. Even if miracously speaking everyone who cares about this issue drops the game and stops paying Mihoyo a dime (which i still highly doubt) , can we really say they're gonna feel it? Since the majority of their revenue comes from average players that don't care about colourism and just like the designs? The good ol' pay with your wallet. There is a chance that they add endgame content and mechanics peoole keep asking about after they see hsr success. But fixing colourism? I just dont see that happening since minority of players care about it.
@@NoOne-fu2qt Absolutely right. This just feels like another notch in the ongoing pattern of not valuing their player base to me. No change will happen, they have already said their piece and they know they will continue to make money. As I said it took them years to fix game-based issues, things that risk losing players much more than this. But in the end, thinking they will change this is delusional. My opinion at the end of the day is just go play an indie game if this really affects how you see the company. It's just sad that in the grand year of 2024, colourism is still an issue that is either uncared for or is taken lightly. (Edit: Quick to add I said 'tolerated', so in this context I'm saying outside of CN it is much more likely for backlash to happen than with just a CN audience alone.)
You see, even chinese players, who are so notorious for being so ignorant about representation and racial issues, found those characters designs strange. For a region taking direct inspiration from pre-colonial Latin America and Africa, those characters are way too pale.
Does it batter? It’s their own fictional world and they can take inspiration from anything from real life into their games. It doesn’t have to be 100% accurate since it’s their world with their own culture.
Do you think Genshin Impact need to make some Character Changes?!

Now one can argue well why don't skin tone count as apart of the culture? Well the main reason it won't count would be,because in some culture people would have like the same skin tone, but their culture would have literally NOTHING in common😅
Then what is the meaning of Culture? Well it means
-the tradition
-the design of their traditional clothings
-the building in that the culture own

In my humble opinion as a POC, it really doesn't matter. Genshin's world isn't realistic, and it probably never will be. If they can’t portray African characters then avoid these cultures and focus on what you know and that’s China and Europe.
If you want accurate region characters then let’s do this…
Ayato, Ayaka and Kokomi need to have black hair… when have you seen naturally light blue/ white young haired characters native to Japan? This also applies to Kazuha and Ningguang (yeah I know she is from Liyue) … unless they are albino this should not exist in that region.
Yoimiya should not be native to Inazuma… she is blond, which means that all of her family should mostly have black hair if they are native to Inazuma.
Xinyan and Kaeya need to be white skin since one is from a Chinese region and the other one is from a region that has no sunlight.
Eula cannot have blue hair.. she needs to have blond or brown hair.
Chongyun has to have black hair unless they have explained that his hair turned white due to his abilities (haven’t done his companion quest)
Cyno cannot have white hair… it has to be black hair…. Unless he has early gray hair or like Chongyun changed color due to his abilities.
You see my point… it’s a game it’s not going to be completely accurate to the region…
Would I love more people with color skin, yes… but again it’s being blown out Of proportion…
Edit: let’s also add to the fact that most of the characters have perfect bodies with no excess of fat in them… yeah these characters are fictional it’s not going to be accurate most of the time…
Genshin is a fantasy open world game so obviously it’s gonna have some fantasy elements in there like multi colored hair, characters in the game can control the elements/ have magical abilities, etc. So Hoyoverse couldn’t just make the characters a bit more accurate to the real world since the game is heavily inspired by it.

you all would lose your mind when you found out that if you search Nero Claudius an Anime girl pops out, just because they based something on another thing, it doesn't mean it's suddenly the end-all be-all representation of what it is, i hate to defend Hoyo, but they are not obligated to make a "representation" as you all like to call it 1:1 to stuff they base on, if you want that, go watch a documentary
take it from fgo, a game based from various myths and cultures but they still let the artist do their thing in designing the characters because, i know this is a foreign concept, they are FICTIONAL. i as Indonesian would have never known historical or mythological figures like Bradamante, one of Charlamagne's Paladins, the Trung sisters from the Vietnamese military leaders, or even the joke about Queen medb's death was due to cheese rolling on top of her
of course they have a different design in-game than they do in source material, what do i do about it? go and look up the damn thing, differentiate between them, realize they're just fiction
It's wild how developers have to remind players that genshin is fictional and none of the characters are real people. Mind virus is spreading like a wildfire on X.
If only people understand that
but why would they base it off of real countries then?
They should probably not base their characters on real deities dark skin tones and make them tan
Like these natlan characters are just tan
I don't think it matters if they go for world designs and architecture but actual things from culture is strange

I have Mexican blood but have very light skin. I hope people remember that there are light skin Hispanics and Africans too. I feel like those people are just forgotten, so that's kinda a problem, so that kind of makes problems in both parties:
Genshin not making enough darker skin playable characters.

They have shown people of colour exist in the world, that is an aspect of their fictional world that has been established. So yes, the "it's just fictional" is a bullshit excuse. Fiction is reflective of its creators, and people don't like what the creators are looking like right now.
I think the characters looks pretty cool
Regardless of what people think considering the situation and it's aspects it's disrespectfull what hoyoverse is doing
Don't any of ya'll find it fucked up about how they use culture and make money off of it but don't proceed to put the people in it? Even without the whole race thing, from a design standpoint, it looks off with them having pale skin, and you can tell they're supposed to have darker skin :/
But, it doesn't matter as long as they make money, and ya'll have fun. You guys don't care if it affects real people and their very real lives :/
Nope because it isn’t supposed to be a simulation it’s inspiration, Natlan is fictional and skin color isn’t culture. Only racists obsess about skin color.

Hoyoverse, if this is not enough. i dont know WHAT is
Can all their combined efforts outspend the whales in China and Asia? Maybe...but I doubt it.
literally only 5 people 💀
The people complaining about Genshin whitewashing their characters are also the ones praising Assassins Creed Shadows for finding the only black man in Japanese (made up) history and deciding to base a game around him.
He actually exists, and you can play as an Japanese person too. Shut up cuase you dont even know what your talking about
Yasuke was a real dude though
He was real. Read a book. The main argument is if he achieved the title of samurai or not.
I feel like it’s easy for you to say because you don’t belong with that culture but for us, we have a different pov than ppl like u 😊
No it’s extremely racist lmao
Don’t use the culture if you don’t want to add the people
Bro no😭✋️
If you are taking from other people culture, you should represent them respectfully. That's the bare minimum.
Wtf lol
Designs are beautiful and it’s good the way they are.
No they aren’t
They could be better
Yes, they are.
They could be better
No
My big thing is that people forget about how good hoyo does with the cultural aspects of the nations like the music, dances, regions. Ya sure they could of made most characters darker but it’s a video game other aspects of the culture will be fantastic. Skin color is only a small part of a culture to me. 😊
Skin color is a huge part
Always has been
Skin color also matters because It's THE PEOPLE!
@@eliajshdjddjsounds like a racist take ngl. Skin color is just a color of skin.
I understand Australia and New Zealand’s history with… well, everything… “blac” is a term among Aboriginal people for a reason, so I wouldn’t mind her being lightskinned or tanned but white, however I do have a problem with her being as pale as the sun-dried orange a plant pot I made for my mother is
Also didgeridoos are an Australian instrument, specifically Aboriginal. Anyway, I find it upsetting that, outside of Australian’s without big platforms, nobody is talking about the Australian and New Zealand influences that are pulled from Aboriginal and Maori culture (and especially the ways they mishandled it like with Mavuika)
no its not, end of discussion
Is crying about pixels the only thing gringos know how to do?
It doesn’t matter and it should not matter period. If a characters going to represent the background of what the region is supposed to be and it look like the characters they shown are representing the region as a whole . This crap of oh these characters are not representative the core of there nation because there white not dark skin? It the world of anime.
Well, to be honest, I wouldn’t pull for the characters if they are black
But if they are doing a dark skin or black inspired region then they should make them black .
Everyone that thinks these designs are fine are wrong
Taking cultures and names from POC and giving them to pasty looking characters is not good
Question is can you outspend the whales in China and Asia? If you and your friends can at least do a dent to it, then they might listen to your whining. But if not, nothing will change.
why is it wrong? 😂
"Taking culture" - no culture was taken honey. Teyvat is a product of inspiration. Are we gate keeping culture now? - culture which is meant to be shared and form a cohessive society and be a melting pot of cultures.
"... and names from POC" - I am literally named after a Greek deity yet not a single drop of blood from a white person is running through my veins

I think nothing's wrong with the current designs
Hoyoverse literally put the name of an orisha on a white character (orishas are black gods from some African-based religions). Don't you think that's disrespectful?
Objectively wrong

Other than that, this shouldn't be made a political issue, its just absurd and cringe. Its barely a game.
Tbh if they did do changes to the skin colour I would’ve hope they could put a little tan on them just like xilonen But I’m not sure if they are gonna do that cuz they already have a full trailer so the chances could be pretty low 😢
Xilonen and Mavuika would look very hot with a deeper tan. Xilonen pretty much reminiscent of Ghislaine Dedoldia from Mushoku Tensei

@@xenoemblem7 yeah
Unfortunately there is still major racism in their culture, but we are slowly pushing them to become better. Though it'll take time to change a whole culture
I personally don't don't care about the skin tone of a characters. As long as their culture is being shown and represented properly. That's good enough for me.
Also this is a fictional game in a fictional setting inspired by real culture, so of course it's not gonna be a 100% accurate to the inspiration.
And as long as the characters are hot. I'll roll.
Also Culture isn't always the skin colour of the people. It's the music, the traditions, the clothes, the sports.
It’s not racism.

When they made little mermaid black
“This is fiction”
Same argument applies here
Double standards 😢
I wish I didn't have to add this part, but the internet is... the internet)

I'm not against those representations. But I hope they understand that these are works of fiction, they don't need to be entirely accurate. . . . People these day always focus on characters' skin color more than personality and background . .

I know for a fact that Chinese players wouldn't be , so why act like this defense is good ?
Valid yes ? But in practicality, Chinese fanbase would never be ok with this and they'd be right .
There is little cultural German display in Mondstadt besides some names and a vague representation of German clothing. I see no offended German, if any, they are happy that there is SOMETHING of theirs in the game. I see no Polish angry that they are not represented, of Czech or Romanian, all those EU countries.

@@wenhaoben2536 So the only issue with my comment is saying Hoyoverse instead of Mihoyo then? Thanks for the correction.
