Genshin Boycott ALMOST NEVER cause any change (unless Zhongli). So, this one is probably going to have the same result. It will last a couple week, and people will forget about it.
True. But, it's better to satisfy the majority that actually spends money on the game instead the one that barely spent any and that's what Hoyo actually did
Actually the cn community did the MOST out of all of us. they removed genshin from trending AND FRONTPAGE from bilibili ive also seen many cn people commenting about their disgust about this
not to rain on your parade but hoyo kinda didin't give a shit about 3 milion follower lose so what makes u think " cn " players knocking genshin down do anything? u are aware that star rail is making same if not more then genshin eatch month. so aaaa yeah
@@gintasasdnot to rain you but genshin cares A LOT about CN players. Just look at the Neuvillette incident. Seeing the CN players annoyed made them put an apology in less than a week. Which is incredible fast for hoyoverse. They had have altercations with CN players before and KNOW that it’s not good for them to anger them. Why you think zhongli got buff ? If CN players continue with their protest and actions, we can expect a change in Hoyoverse diversity management.

Boycott?? They more like protesting. I understand if they want to be represented but what they are doing is not doing much, hoyo will just ignore under the pretense of being a fiction and not based on reality
I’m Mexican so I was exited about Natlan. Mexico along with other latin American countries are very diverse, you see people of the whitest shades to the darkest shade possible. So it made sense to me that there would white playable characters from natlan. What I wasn’t expecting was for ALL of them to be white against my better judgement. Even with the natlan npc leaks most of them are white. It just didn’t feel right to me and I genuinely can’t see myself spending any money on this game anymore. Like idc at this point if it won’t make any change I just wouldn’t feel right spending my money on a game that disrespects ppl of color like this. I don’t have an issue with other ppl spending money on this game but I just can’t see myself doing it
Honestly, people should have stopped playing at Sumeru, when the 'racism' issue was first raised. Most of the people who complained then, continued playing and spent money for characters then, and later in Fontaine. That's the main reason why I feel that this is all going to lead to nothing. People are still going to spend on Welkin and BP, and even splurge on Natlan characters once further details about them come out. This is currently getting a lot of attention now, thanks to the VAs speaking out, but it's still just lip service at the moment. You know what will really make a difference? If all those VAs actually quit voicing Genshin characters until Hoyo responds. I'll wait for the first one to announce it.
Getting EN va's to all quit, cool the game comes in 3 other languages. Cause no shot if you think the VA's of other languages share the Western perspective. Not to burst your bubble but JP and CN superior to EN.
@@stevenzhao1561 It won't happen. Hoyo wouldn't budge. But you're naive to presume that people wouldn't care if there's no EN voice-acting for Genshin. It's literally the international language. CN VA are only for CN. The rest of the world doesn't really care about CN VAs save for some trying to listen to it. JP on the other hand is actually relevant in global compared to CN due to Japan's soft power from Anime and Japanese culture. But still, only having CN or JP would force others to read subtitles which suck. Also, why do you feel personally attacked? 😂 Hoyo is your mother or something?
@@hijodelsoldeoriente Tell that to snowpoint, I just find it funny how people think boycotting for Genshin about skin tone would work when boycotts about anniversary rewards and old character kits failed. Maybe you right that JP va are more relevant in the global sense compared to CN, but don’t kid yourself if you think EN can still compare. In terms of reading subtitles, if we can do it for anime we can do it for a mobile game.
I'm just gonna say this: There's more to a culture than just the colour of the skin. Boiling down a culture/race to a skin tone is rather insulting when said culture has so much more to offer in terms of representation. Do I want more diversity in terms of skin colour? Yes. But protesting the game for the lack of skin colour under the guise of "representation" is stupid and tone deaf to me.
That's not the issue here. People are upset because Hoyoverse has consistently borrowed aspects (such as language, names, mythology, music, fashion, architecture, etc) from various cultures, while also designing the characters to resemble (superficially) the people who own that culture. They have done this with Mondstadt, Liyue, Inazuma (especially those two), Fontaine and probably Snezhnaya too. Even Sumeru to an extent. Within the limitations and liberties of the anime style, those characters could pass as their real-world ethnicities because they all share similar skin tones with said ethnicities. That's why when you look at an Inazuman character, you think "this looks like someone from Japan in the anime style." Obviously these are still fictional regions, but Hoyo still puts effort into making them resemble their IRL counterparts. I mean did they have to: - Design Yun Jin in a way that feels so authentic to Chinese opera, right down to the Divine Damsel performance that was so widely praised by Chinese media? - Parallel the Japanese history of Sakoku and Katanagari in the Inazuma storyline? - Draw the Shogunate soldiers in Raiden's backstory cutscene in the style of ukiyoe caricatures of Japanese people? - Heavily base the dead and desolate Tsurumi Island on the culture of the Ainu indigenous minority, who risked losing their identity at the hands of Yamato colonisers? With Natlan, even though it's very likely that the region is mostly inspired by Latin America, Hoyo still decided to include very clearly African concepts in the world building, like the namesakes of some tribal leaders and their companions in the Talking Stick lore desc being African leaders and African cryptids. They even use a Swahili term in Kachina's introduction, "uthabiti". So... why bother including African stuff for important details of Natlan's world building at all if they aren't going to bother doing the same for the character design?
@@Syiepherze That's exactly the issue, NOBODY would complain if they made the characters darker skin. Their issue isn't "representation" it's skin color, it's very obvious
And talk realize all the villains have the darker skin tones..it’s like there saying “your culture is so nice and look great in our game!…just not you”
So glad Reverse 1999 doesn't have this issue. They got a variety of skin tones. Anyway there is growing resentment towards foreigners in China. Some American tourists got beaten so bad. I want to say that unfortunately because they’re a Chinese game they are majorly censored by the Chinese government so they can’t show certain things in their games which suck but it’s not hoyo’s fault it’s the Chinese government’s fault.
I dont get the idea of CCP censoring dark skin chara, bcs I dont know what they gain from this. I'd even say that its either CCP censorship is loosen by time or what we know about these censorship stuff is not right. Not trying to defend CCP here, but I think you are barking on the wrong tree

I was so surprised to see so many voice actors and bigger creators speaking out, because I've only been seeing hoyovesre defenders and some stupid racist creators who most of the time don't even understand how serious this situation is. I understand unlike what some like to claim it is a completely valid controversy, assuming Hoyoverse questionable history and Treatment of tan characters. Best is to not spend any money and preferably, stop playing!
What bothers me about genshin impact is the fandom itself, sure there are many good people in the fandom like seen in this video but the majority of the fandom just feels toxic due to cyberbulling and jealousy. I surely miss when it first came out when everything about it was new and it didn't have hate. This comment doesn't have to do with the racist controversy, it has to do with maturity and respect. I agree that what mihoyo did was very wrong. But that's the disadvantage of a huge community, fights, hate and rage.
In fact, this is not the first time that genshin has been ostracized for not respecting culture, because sumeru has also been in a situation quite similar to this, but I think hoyo will continue to ignore this like always
Lmao ignoring culture? its literally a game where everything is fictional and is not 100% real life based. they always talk about this, no matter how much white people is tired of seeing white people in games that wont change because no one like black characters in games, specially china.

@@rickeykekoa023that they wanted to represent cultures around the world. They have said that in X.0 livestreams all the time. They always mention what cultures they have integrated into the game.
We'll see what happens. If CN comes with the same energy the west is coming with, Hoyo might do something. I'm skeptical of anything happening like the "3 yr anniversary" situation. Hopefully the characters get their accurate depictions tho
don't take this the wrong way but there's no way i'm gonna stop playing just because some people are crying about something that won't change AGAIN. CN community holds most of (if not all) the power when it comes to Hoyo's Decision making, so unless they make waves nothing is gonna happen. besides, why should i ruin my good times worrying about other idiots who just cry on the internet constantly, all these content creators/VA's don't give a damn and are just trying to appeal to the very loud, and in their eye's, dangerous audience for their channels/careers. None of these people are actually gonna stop playing the game because they don't really care. maybe if all these braindead goofballs stop playing i'll actually consider doing so myself. i'm not racist and it's not that i don't wanna see some change it's just that i already got my own garbage to deal with and i can't bother sacrificing my sanity just for nothing to come from it. love all u idiots reading this
im very agree!!!! even in the cn community they didn't care or reponse for anything tho. but at least for the neu's incident they reponse bcs of the players are going to report them to the law.
Not hard to make them dark, but china haves something against color, but doesn’t mean go crazy over it when it impossible to change, even anime how many are very dark? Even when they’re dark they’re not main part of anime.
The problem is there would be more issues if they use dark colours. Because there would be people who would find it more racist using their colours when Hoyoverse is a Chinese company.
They can say its fiction but how can you get inspiration from all these different landscapes, climates, clothing, the flora there, then relegate the people to antagonist roles or minorities in their own environment. It's like using different cultures as a set for your 'preferred' characters
As long the boycott do not have the full backing of the majority of the fanbase outside of Twitter/X. Like how majority AC fans support the Japanese AC fanbase on the Assassins Creed Shadow drama. Since that trailer have a massive amount of dislikes compare to the meager amount in Natlan trailer. This boycott more likely end in failure and prove this whole drama is just a extreme version of performance activism. Also proving Twitter/X is the worse place to gauge consensus of the majority.
I’m kinda glad that the comments criticizing this “twitter mob” are getting little support in this comment section, especially when out of all the boycotts, this one is probably the most reasonable one
There's actually an extremely racist saying in China that goes something like "yi bai zhe san chou," basically meaning "white skin can make up three uglies," countries like Japan, Korea, and China, are all very beauty centered. I think a lot of genshins popularity has to do with their attractive characters, thats why characters will probably always be single and look nice.
It is really not racist if you know the context it is classist instead if you look pale which means you can afford to not go outside and probably not working in physical labor.
ahhh yes another opportunity for me, lately ive been playing genshin only to learn stuff from it like what not to do and making observation on optimization techniques because personally its the best fthan many games, maybe the best than the rest, not only genshin ive been learning stuff from but several games that are not even gacha, still my dream is to make my lore become a gacha game and ive been writing it for about a year now, learning coding, 3D modelling, anime drawing, about my lore design, ive got interesting ideas on regions such as africa inspired regions with very interesting characters for now i have two specical characters from the africa inspired region one having being inspired by the best story from my traditional lore wont mention it but i consider it a gold mine, and even other regions have cool characters and im very confident its gonna be a banger so, my plan is to make this game on roblox 😅 (a project proposal to game studios and honestly im targeting kuro games), but my initial planning is to create a team to help me create the game in roblox as soon as next year, wish me luck 😉
Best of luck friend!! The closest thing I've seen to a full African-inspired region is the fan-made Pokemon region "Leweka" but it is always nice to see more attempts at showcasing African culture and folklore. It's always overlooked in favour of Western and Eastern stuff these days; whenever someone makes an attempt, people always cry "woke"... I'm also working on a few fantasy projects based on my country, but it's a little difficult because there isn't too much documentation online to work with and draw inspiration from. But I'm trying my best 😂 Cheers!
People really thinking this boycott will work given the history of boycotts with hoyo. If the anniversary boycott and request for character updates boycott (rewards and actual in game gameplay) fail, there is no chance a boycott about skin tone is gonna work.
Boycotts are always guaranteed to work when the audience representing the viewpoint is big enough or able to persuade the entire community. The reason it won't work this time is because only like 1% of the community actually cares about this specific issue. The major problem with this specific issue is one side is trying to override hoyo's artistic freedom for something no one really cares about. Most the hispanic community doesn't care. Which are the only opinions big enough to matter in this case as black people combined hardly make up 10% of the world's population. That is if you include basically all hispanics or anyone even remotely dark skinned so it's prob closer to like 3%. Not all of these people play Genshin for that matter either which is likely to drop the number even more. At most like 1% of the genshin community represent the absolute darkest skin tones they say they want to see. Their opinions on it are stronger than that of the overwhelming majority. You can see how that gets drowned out by people just happy with what they got already. They are being unreasonable for the most part as well. They are trying to force something they want against the rights of a creator. Creators don't like that in general. xD They don't really understand that they are weighing their like 90 000 vs a community that is like 4 billion people wide. I think they should cut their losses and be happy they are getting so many darker skinned people. =3
I know she's Hawaii inspired, but coming from the latinamerican perspective, she's an average skin tone in Mexico and darker than 90% of Argentina. The actual hispanic community loves the character designs and we don't care about skin color lol.
@@Syiepherze Yes it does when they are being unreasonable. Which they've been since they started this controversy. The audience who are exactly represented by the characters don't care. So people shouldn't be caring and representing them either. They can be mad for their own reasons, but they are not allowed to get mad for the representation's cause now. Sure they can stick to the argument that the characters aren't black enough but that just makes them look racist.
June Yoon voices, most recently, Ga ming's fatehr along with kujo sara's father i believe. Hes played a couple other npc's in genshin but he's a super cool VA

Hero Hei's a damn hero of justice who's gonna virtue signal whichever side's winning or act "neutral" to look right. All he cares about is social credit points. Don't know why people even take him seriously
For me, I just focus on how they handle the culture since even if it is fictional, things like music or places are derived from real life culture and it would be fun to see that
@@krusher737 thats exactly what everyone should focus on rather than skin color. music, clothing, food and so on have more of an impact on a region rather than skin color. they can introduce new cultures you can research on.
Ororon is a name unrealted to Olorun, the Nigerian deity. This name might be aztec bit seems to be australian too, Oroton. The fandom decided it's based on X and the character is accurately X so must have skin like X... *sighs* As someone who is latin mixed race with a maori deity name, I don't see what the problem is. Why is a chinese gacha game needs to have any representation in a fantasy game is beyond me. Zhongli is pasty white... Chinese people aren't mostly white. They never represented ANY culture, not even their own.
Wow different languages have similar sounding things, shocking. Every single archon is named after one of the 72 demons. Ororun isn’t one of them, neither is Olorun. Notice Nahida isn’t either. Her mythological name is Beur, same with Focalors and the rest of them.
Tbh, I also think the Ororon-Olorun connection is a little bit shaky but the Chinese, Japanese and Korean names are all pretty accurate transliterations of "Olorun". Doesn't matter if you switch the Ls with Rs and vice versa, it's still a very specific combination of phonemes, and there is a LOT of precedent in the game for naming the characters after real historical and mythological figures. You can't really blame people for thinking this Also, that last part is CAP and you know it 😒
I think one of the problems people don’t think about is that Hoyoverse is a Chinese Company. I think they’re more worried that if they use dark colours, some people would find it more racist because they’re using colour that’s not their own. People would cause trouble saying that Hoyoverse is stealing their colour or disrespecting them. Either way people would always find ways to stir up problems.
Enemies and npcs have dark skin so why can’t they do it with playable characters? I just don’t understand why they don’t. The best thing that could happen is the CN also speaking out about it(because that’s where most of their money is coming from, the cn community is the one they listen to).
Iansan is the only one thats accurate. Mualani is fine. Xilolin is also fine. Kinich looks like he's chinese Chasca looks like rosaria if she grew up in fontaine Mavuika? She looks fontainian. Kachina looks like, liyuean. Like yaoyao.
personally i think only the nation is based off it and not the characters but i cant assume but i can say it might be the designer's of the characters fault and not the animators since they cant change the design (not tryna defend them)
Literally nobody apart from twitter insane people care about this. Do you know what people care about? The Neuvillete spin to win nerf. Hoyoverse is gonna roll that back. The backlash for that was so insane in the CN community that they issued an apology, along with 1600 apologems to be credited in a future patch, revealing they are roiling back the so called nerf. All 20 people with 50 twitter accounts that are complaining about skin color most likely dont play the game. This has been tried with the Sumeru region release and Hoyoverse told them to get bent.
the voice actors who agreed to voice these pale af character bc yay money and now afterwards come out with their fake activism lol similar to how genshin fandom loves to pretend they care so much but the moment genshin releases a character they like they spend money again and it is all forgotten. and half of the people who say stuff like "playing the game is fine!! just stay f2p!!" are most likely people who are f2p anyway so they can pretend to care without having to change/give up on anything. why not drop the game? oh yea, you care but only if it means that you do not have to give up a source of entertainment lmao
Genshin will never change if they keep up their revenue. Which of course whales will keep pulling. While some are unhappy, majority of the people playing dont care enough to refuse a new character. I just hope hsr wont be making the same mistakes if they decide to ever release a planet that's culture normally would have more dark skinned people. Boycott or not, this whole thing happening again has turned me off to the game. I uninstalled, I won't be coming back and I likely won't be playing any other Mihoyo games. You must have missed the Twitter discourse. When they first leaked the Sumeru characters there was HUGE backlash for all of the playable units being light-skinned especially Nahida
@@elizabethk007 But even then I don't see why this is a problem. I am Indian and I barely cared about the skin colour of the Sumeru characters. Not every Indian is a shade of brown. Infact I'm myself pretty pale skinned for how the typical Indian skin tone is perceived to be and I have no ancestry outside this country. Brown skin and other shades spread seemingly equally throughout the population. Up north pale skin is more dominant. Down south it's the opposite. I think as long as the story, the lore, the gameplay is good enough enjoying the "game" shouldn't be a problem right?
@@rsen507 I think people had assumed Sumeru was primarily based on India (instead of Iran which seems to be the actual main inspiration for most of the region, including parts of the desert), so because they were so starved for more dark skinned representation in the game (this is after all a game that explores different parts of a world that mirrors our own) they were hoping Sumeru would finally be that update; where there would be a range of skin tones similar to that seen across the whole subcontinent. But they were probably expecting at least brown characters specifically like people from South India, SL, Maldives, etc. Also not to sound mean, but it isn't really surprising that you don't see the issue, characters who have skin as fair as yours have already been in the game since day 1
This is probably gonna get me hated, but whatever. First of all, it is a fictional game. Does it take inspiration from real like cultures, yes, is it the same thing though? No. If anything, every region except for Liyue and Inazuma are just mixtures of IRL regions. Also, people are mistaken. I think I can speak for at least 30% of players when I say, what I like is the culture and world depicted in the game, not those of real life, okay? I like whatever it is that they made with that inspiration; as for the source of inspiration itself, I am not the least bit interested. No offense, but they are just boring and dull and out of time. Lastly, again, this is fictional game, and a game at its essence. When I play a game, I look for a good story, nice looking characters, good music and cinematic, that’s all. If you care more about representation than what the game has already shown to be able to offer, then stop yelling boycott, just stop playing and find another game, since it is clearly not for you, but don’t ruin it for the rest of us. If you want representation, find it elsewhere; you care about the skin color of fictional characters, go somewhere else please.
@@_butter.cup_ , I don't see it that way. Let's focus on what @shuradurakura8310 was saying. "Genshin Impact" is a fictional game that takes inspiration from different cultures. It's not supposed to be an exact reflection of any real-world region. A lot of us play it for the unique world and storytelling, not for a precise cultural representation. Games have the freedom to mix and match cultural elements to create something new and interesting. The fun comes from the creativity and the immersive experience, not from how accurately it represents real life. Your example about using French and Chinese culture but making all the characters black seems like a different issue from what we're discussing. The main thing should be how the game's story and artistic choices fit its fictional world. Each game handles representation differently, and while it's great to see diversity, it's not always the main focus. In "Genshin Impact," the appeal is in its creative and imaginative take on various cultures.
@@raghatz when Yunjin sang Chinese Opera (regardless of the dub), Chinese opera became well known around the world. It went viral. It literally revived Chinese Opera. The opera singer who voiced Yunjin’s singing voice also got recognition because of it. That’s the effect Genshin had back then. With the growing popularity of the game, they have the ability to do this with other cultures too. Chinese opera is a REAL thing, not fiction.

I don’t have an issue with other ppl spending money on this game but I just can’t see myself doing it
The darkest character we’ve seen is just slightly tan
Exactly
Getting EN va's to all quit, cool the game comes in 3 other languages. Cause no shot if you think the VA's of other languages share the Western perspective.

JP on the other hand is actually relevant in global compared to CN due to Japan's soft power from Anime and Japanese culture.
But still, only having CN or JP would force others to read subtitles which suck.
Also, why do you feel personally attacked? 😂 Hoyo is your mother or something?
VAs dont mean anything, they could just hire another.

Out of all the languages, bro decided to speak the truth
@@krusher737 which is the best language
I mean did they have to:
- Design Yun Jin in a way that feels so authentic to Chinese opera, right down to the Divine Damsel performance that was so widely praised by Chinese media?

Mualani is normal, I know so cause some of my hawaiian relatives are lighter in skin.

To be honest I think people are Karens on both "issues". Society is full of so many immature brats.

Genshin will never change if they keep up their revenue. Which of course whales will keep pulling. While some are unhappy, majority of the people playing dont care enough to refuse a new character. People tend to forget that the main market Hoyoverse is catering towards is the playerbase in Asia and that is why the characters look like they look.
They want people to spend money on the game and unfortunately part of the beauty standard in Asia is lighter skin complexion. Just take a look at any K-Pop, Japanese or Chinese idol. Most of them are pale af. I'd love to see more variety in Hoyoverse games but it's just the sad reality.

Global players are smaller in comparison to their asian players percentage and US only makes up for a tiny portion of that global player fanbase. Its already clear from day 1 whose target audiences genshin were aimed for. So all of these loud noises from the self-proclaimed majority of the fanbase ain’t gonna do anything to them.
What I get from this is kiss your EN VAs for these games goodbye since, I think they are more concerned with thier biggest market which is CN.
White skin black skin? As a Chinese, to me these characters are just darker yellow and pale yellow. Mihoyo was just wiping up his ass because of bug fixing and weakening the character.

This is really relevant only for a small portion of Genshin players that are into identity politics and enjoy being offended on behalf of third parties. Wasn't Sumeru partly based on India ? I don't remember people lamenting this much about the lack of brown characters in Sumeru.
Okay so if someone made a game where they use French and Chinese culture but make all the characters black, would your answer be different then?
