This is not one of their mainstream songs. It is my FAVORITE song of theirs, one of my favorite songs of all time from anyone so I constantly look for a reaction to it.

Partially true, he is an incredible talent but you can’t be downplaying the other band members. I’m incredibly doubtful he writes every aspect but I’m always willing to learn new information
His voice is often the harmony to Serj's front man. As talented as Serj is the more and more time I've spent listening to SOAD the more I appreciate Daron's vocals. The further into the catalog the more he steps into the spotlight.
„Its so off beat“ you said. That‘s because of the beat is 5/4 during the verse, 6/4 in the bridge and chorus, and the usual 4/4 just at the ending. Love that 😁☺️
It actually frustrates me when I’m air drumming in my car lol. And I consider myself to be pretty good with tempo and time, but this song is pretty difficult to follow!
if memory serves, i think this song started with a dream one of the band members had of a boy offering a girl wild berries in a forest, not knowing that they were poisonous. which explains the repeated line about berries and a lot of the imagery in the music video. what i've noticed about SOAD is that it's hard to pin down an exact "meaning" to most of their songs because they seem to be more like meditations on a broader topic instead of one focused story. i think the topic of this song is just "what happens when we die?" and how impossible it is to answer that, well, question.
If I’m not mistaken, SOAD is more of a “propaganda” type band. Corrupt governments, entities, etc. I’m sure a lot of their songs don’t have the same message, but they all have some sort of significance. Like the Tiananmen Square massacre. Btw thanks for a super cool story for a song I f’ing love😃
Definitely very cryptic and esoteric. Like any great art it couches the meaning behind other elements with just enough of the cushion peaking out of the upholstery to breadcrumb you onto the trail. Allowing you to interpret your own method of traversing to the destination.
I love how more comfortable you get with each reaction. Who you are shows more and more, and it becomes that much more enjoyable to watch you experience various songs.
For me it's about junkies with depression, taking drugs close to the limit and walking this thin line between life and death chasing the other side feeling. They probably where pretty close once or twice, and felt something special so calm and peaceful. And they are wondering around this line thinking what's gonna be there, and if today is the time they go and there will be no return.
Teddy you’re a real one. I must express my gratitude. You have made me fall back in love with the music of my youth, your energy radiates brother. Thank you.
The music vid's great but it cuts out about a minute and a half of the song so a lyric vid would be awesome as well! Such a good song and album from them! Also their live performance from Brixton in 2006, peak BFMV imo 🤘
Teddy is such a good reactor man he tries to understand the music and the lyrics.I love that he's trying something new instead of UK rap . I love that he got a new genre and he's spreading his "vocabulary" of music.
If you really like this song, they way they broke it down, and built it back up, and the did it again... Listen to deer dance by S.O.A.D!! Youd love it!!!
Serj grew up inspired by opera house music because his grandmother so he taught himself to sing and do the vibrato, then when he met the rest of the band, Daron had the same interests of singing and they fprmed SOAD in college and all of them taught themselves how to play instruments because they didn't know how, as kids and teens. Little fun fact about this amazing band! I have been a fan since day 1. I recommend their under-rated cover of Snowblind (originally by Black Sabbath)
Saw this live at Sick New World. They totally got off and flubbed it in the beginning. Had to start over. “It happens”, Daran said. It certainly does, my friend. Good to know they’re human! ♥️
the time signatures in this song are absolutely silly. i wouldnt be surprised if they had a live version to play most of the time because i couldnt imagine trying to count this out, consistently, live.
You absolutely belong in this community. Rock/Metal is unending diversity, and the entry ticket is enthusiasm. So you are already there. If there ever was a community where an acceptable level of participation was just standing around and looking at the other weirdos doing their thing, this is the one. You dont even have to grow or change. If that's what you enjoy, its all good. You belong here buddy. Take your time, and enjoy the ride. We are all jealous that you get to experience all this for the first time, and grateful that we get to go along for the ride.
There's meaning in all of SOADs lyrics. Anyone who says its just them waffling along is avoiding looking at the lyrics, which ironically is the basis for BYOB. Just keep living your happy life, ignore the man behind the curtain.
My favourite part of this song (maybe my favourite bit of SOAD at all) is the small bass riff on the “are you, are you dreaming?” Shavo is just so casually amazing here!
Teddy, thank you for finally reacting to this song. I've been bugging you about this song. This is my favorite SOAD song of all time. I've been listening to this song for years and it still gives me a crazy adrenaline rush every time! My interpretation of this song is people's questions about death and possibly suicide too. "Sweet berries for two" gives me a feeling of 2 people deciding to commit the act of suicide together...kinda like Romeo & Juliet. Listening to SOAD is like being on a rollercoaster ride blind-folded....and that's why I love them! Looking forward to more SOAD reactions!
System of a down basically are a similar type of band to Rage against the Machine in the sense it is a political one fighting against oppression etc. System are just a bit more fun and lighthearted I find.
Your one of us no doubt m8, it took me a long time to fully get into metal and I got into it back in high school. System of a Down and Slipknot had a huge part to play in my metal journey. If it weren't for SOAD I'd probably never have become a full on metal head.
So glad you reacted to this song I love it and it brings back a LOT of emotions and crazy moments with my family. I love how you reacted to it and this mix between hyped and confused at times xD keep going !
Most SOAD songs have specific meaning, i recommend doing a little reading before you react to a song so you have some context going in. That said if you want a SOAD song with very obvious meaning behind it check out "Prison Song"
Quizas nadie lea este comentario pero quiero agregar el inmenso significado filosófico en cada letra de SOAD. A priori si solo escuchas su letras pensarás que es una tontería pero esta genta no d ja nada al azar. Also Slipknot has a song called spiders which is in 7/8 if you want some more weird flow

Hey teddy, didn't see anyone mention it, I'm sure it was, but... Your voice is only coming through left speaker, the music is through both, just thought I'd let you know. Loving your reactions, any chance you can look at Hollywood undead. (everywhere I go, undead, what ever it takes or riot are my favorites)
Hey man there are 3 songs you have to check out one is soil from system of a down has one of my favourite songs they have ever done. the next is nirvana where did you sleep last night it was from what I remember one of the last songs kurt ever performed before he tragically passed away. Song gives me chills every time I listen to it an the final song is lost by linkin park. It's an amazing song that hits even harder knowing what we know about chester much love from Australia mate.
I don't know what songs you've listened to of theirs, but if you want some songs with clearer messages try boom, soldier side, hypnotize (the song not the album), prison song, ADD, or PLUCK. They all have very clear messages, the first song listed has the lines "the bottom line is money nobody gives a fuck, four thousand hungry children leave us per hour from starvation, while billions are spent on bombs creating death showers". Unfortunately their overtly political songs didn't get nearly as much airtime (being anti-war around 9/11 was a hard sell) so people who don't go deeper into their music only know the more obfuscated songs. Before I found BTS system were my main special interest group from about 2003-2018 so I know a fair bit about their music. At the end of the toxicity album after aerials there's a secret bonus track from Serj's side project serart with an Armenian folk musician called Arto, it's probably not worth a reaction video but definitely worth a listen, absolutely nothing like system of a down at all but it gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it.
I think you're referring to Daron Malakian, he's the lead guitar and backing vocals (aka screaming as you put it) although Anthony Fauci (the chief medical advisor to the president aka the COVID guy) would be an interesting addition 😂 As a SOAD fan for over 20 years I always love watching people react to them and I enjoy yours as they are so genuine!

It is my FAVORITE song of theirs, one of my favorite songs of all time from anyone so I constantly look for a reaction to it.
I’m glad you stumbled across mine!
Holy Mountains for me.. it makes you tears when you think about the lyrical meaning
The brutally high notes in this song and screams are sung by Serj, my friend. One of the best voices in metal of all times.
You're ready for one or two more of their songs; I-E-A-I-A-I-O __ Sugar __ Deer Dance __ ATWA __ Prison Song __ Psycho __ Cigaro __ Spiders __ Suite Pee __ Hypnotize __ Chic-N-Stu __ Needles __ Forest __ Lonely Day.
Chic-N-Stu!
yes indeed; Teddy is ready
All great choices
That’s definitely more than one or two.
PSYCHO GROUPIE COCAINE CRAZY
Poor Daron is always "the other guy" in these reaction videos when he's the mastermind behind most (if not all?) of SOAD music :')
Yeah agreed. Love Daron
Partially true, he is an incredible talent but you can’t be downplaying the other band members. I’m incredibly doubtful he writes every aspect but I’m always willing to learn new information
actually shavo the bassist writes and composes a lot of stuff :) toxicity is almost completly written by him iirc
His voice is often the harmony to Serj's front man. As talented as Serj is the more and more time I've spent listening to SOAD the more I appreciate Daron's vocals. The further into the catalog the more he steps into the spotlight.
That's the reason they no longer make new music, ego is a hell of a drug.

the sweet berries part/beginning is 9/8, and there is also 3/4 in there too as well as all 3 time sigs you mentioned!
The time changes in this song are so fun...it's both the music theory nerd AND the Tool fan inside of me lol.
It actually frustrates me when I’m air drumming in my car lol. And I consider myself to be pretty good with tempo and time, but this song is pretty difficult to follow!
