I think Dean is able to be so chill around Rory because he sees her as a person without any free will and was stolen by Jess. However, she wasn’t. She knew every step she took towards Jess, away from Dean.

As a woman who has interacted with my fair share of “nice guys”, I have a different opinion. I feel like he lacks emotional intelligence, empathy, and self awareness. As a guy when I was younger I remember being this way when I had breakup happened via cheating, it was all about making the person feel terrible for their decision, when in reality I wanted the person to feel the pain I was feeling, and I honestly regret it, that energy needs to be put into yourself and what you contribute to what happened instead of hyper focused on how you were wronged, move on try to be better. I wish I was able to have a conversation like this when I look back, because her answer to being friends again was for me to get over it. I honestly just wanted to know the why of the cheating and ownership of her actions, and that closure she wouldn't give me and for me I had to accept she wasn't going to either and I felt it was a power trip because she knew I wanted to know and wouldn't tell me and that was why I eventually moved away.

What I find interesting is that Dean is even trying to win Rory back. I know Jess was a jerk, what else is new. But Rory is the one who kissed Jess while with Dean and harberd secret feelings for a year. I know people grow apart and change and she's young, but it doesn't make how she treated him right. If I was Dean I'd probably not want to be anywhere near Rory, not because she lost interest, but because of how she handled it. Being treated that way would probably leave me with insecurities that would follow me for a while.

Where Dean lost me was when he wanted the 50s housewife thing and was angry that Rory didn’t say “i love you” back.
What lost me with Jess, at this stage was him being broody, forcing himself on her, and just not communicating with her.
Rory had her toxic traits with both of them.
I just don’t want Jono to ignore the arc of Jess because I feel people only focus on Jess at this one stage of his life.
While he did not experience some change with Rori, he did show it with Luke and getting a job and visited his father to figure some things out and get closure. This is why I am a Jess fan.
I feel Dean went downhill. Him getting married early, treating his wife like crap, and cheating with Rori.
Did the writers have to write either character this way? No. But appreciate how they show flawed characters. Some people go the wrong path and some don’t.

I know it was the right decision for both of us, we just can’t give each other what the other needs right now but damn I miss him. You go from being in communication with someone all day, every day, being excited to tell them things or hear about their day to silence. We both agreed that for now, we need space to grieve the relationship and what could have been if we met each other at the right time in our lives but I miss him as a friend just as much as a partner. Breakups are so hard and I hope I handle it better than both Jess and Dean lmao Then again I’m 30 so I have an advantage over them from lots of experience with this sort of thing 😂

  • @sarah4hp

I definitely put the blame solely on the person in a relationship in the case of cheating. If Rory was happy with Dean, and wanted to be with Dean, then Jess could have flirted and pursued her all he wanted and it wouldn’t have mattered. She wanted Jess, had feelings for Jess, and she didn’t have those feelings for Dean anymore, so it worked because she wanted it to.
It just sucks that she was too immature and inexperienced to know how to handle it, and that she ended up hurting Dean that much more by not being honest about what she was feeling and who she wanted to be with. First love is rarely easy nor painless, and we sadly often have to learn many things the hard way, and that is definitely the case for both Rory and Dean 😅

It was interesting watching this episode and the episode where you (rightly) pointed out a lot of Jess's actions-driven-of-ignorance-and-insecurity right after one another. I do think you are much harder on Jess than on Dean, and I find that interesting.
In this episode, I feel like there is a lot of "Hm, Dean didn't handle this super well," and in the other episode it was "But, just because you haven't been taught well how to love, doesn't excuse problematic behavior." Both of those things are true, but yiur tone difference shows your pretty clear preference. In reality, both of these guys are being manipulative jerks at this point in the story line.
I think the thing that always rubbed me wrong about Dean is that he *did* know better--he comes from a loving home with security, etc. from all we know--but he was still controlling. Sometimes to the point of being kind of scary. While Jess was absolutely a jerk (especially the line about "that was when I was trying to win you"--GROSS), he did change for the better as he felt more secure in Rory's (and Luke's) love. But I always felt Dean wanted Rory to be who he thought she should be instead of really seeing her and loving her for who she actually was.

One thing that I’m surprised no one seems to mention is that Rory even wanting to go to Harvard in the first place- supposedly since she was in the single digits- was the result of Lorelei instilling in her daughter the opposite of what her parents value. Harvard and Yale are rival schools, and even growing up in the NE, for a TODDLER or PRESCHOOL age child to aspire to anything other than, I dunno, riding a two wheeler can only be the result of parental influence. The way in which basically everything Lorelei does being in service of saying screw you to her folks is so cringey.

Jono, I think the way you characterize Jess is exactly the way all the Stars Hollow townspeople do. They’ve decided he’s a non-starter and so they see him through a negative lens. He never gets a fair shake to better himself because everyone assumes he’s the problem, like how he knows even if Dean hits him he will be at fault.
Put aside the fact that 17 year olds are 17. Jess is an abused kid living with an extended family member. He is pushing boundaries because no one has ever stayed or wanted him. He’s daring them to care about him. My heart breaks for him every time I watch this show.
I have grace for all the kids. They’re learning. But it can be frustrating sometimes that you sound like the people in Stars Hollow. You don’t have to want him with Rory, I think many of us agree at this stage he hasn’t done enough healing to be a good partner, but if Rory and Dean are just kids…so is Jess.

I would say it's entirely inappropriate given the circumstances. Rory is a cheater. She was having an emotional affair which became a physical affair when she actually kissed Jess. It doesn't matter if you apologize you have proven yourself to be unworthy of trust. Jess is validly worried about because he knows he's with her after an affair, so obviously she's capable of it. She's not actually showing accountability because she meets up with her ex alone. Red Flag (double because she's a cheater). Dean is hopeful he can't steal Rory back. Jess knows if he was able to do it then another guy will also be able to do it. Especially, a guy she was already attracted to. If you have cheated you owe it to your partner to hold yourself to more stringent rules including past relationships.

Because of this I could be overly critical, but knowing what I know in later seasons, I can easily see Dean becoming very abusive under the right circumstances. Jess is out of control and a mess, but seems like he knows his limits. He’s ultimately out to hurt himself, doesn’t have much of a care to hurt someone else. Dean seems pinned up and when unleashed, would throw limits out the door. He would be vengeful.

About Jess v. Dean...you haven't finished S3 yet, have you?
For me, it comes down to the head space Jess is in at the time. If he's upset, I think Dean wins. Sheer height and shoulder width advantage. If Jess is more or less clear-headed (like I'd say he was in the scene you showed), I think Jess wins. Jess is smarter than Dean (as he shows here), and so I think Jess would be able to conserve his energy (let Dean attack first) and dodge and evade until he could take him down.
But this is my main problem with Dean...or, rather, the writing of him: He is constantly dumbed down to make Rory's other boyfriends (Jess and [spoiler]) look better. Like, Dean was originally from Chicago (big city) and wanting Rory to read Hunter Thompson, which isn't something most ordinary teenage boys do. He even made it through Anna Karenina. I was an English major who can sit down and plough through Austen and Hardy and Dostoevsky, but even I couldn't get through Tolstoy. To make Jess look better, the writers make Dean much more of, you know, a small-town guy who wouldn't need more than an associate's degree to get a middle management job in construction.

Okay, I got be real here… Points for strategy? Really, Jono? I mean, then what about Jess’ points for strategy for buying that basket? I gotta wish you good luck for season 4!
Being really honest here, I’m not buying anything Dean’s saying or doing at all. The way he’s acting towards Jess? That’s his true self. He’s aggressive and he’s angry. The only reason he’s not mad at Rory and accepted her apology is because he wants her back so bad and that also shows of a bit of his lack of self respect again…
He’s trying to be that “Nice Guy” and frame Jess while in reality he’s being manipulative, trying to reconnect with Rory (TALKING ABOUT COLLEGE?!) as a friend with second intentions in his mind already and that’s absolutely disgusting, at least we can say Jess was honest about being a jerk and wanting to be with Rory!
We know very well what was his opinion and thoughts about college, about future and about Rory’s choice and picking specifically this topic, saying he changed his mind because of her, her “Harvard talk” and the books she “pushed on him” (if I’m not wrong he already liked reading from the first season, right?) just to make it seem like… Idk “wow, how sweet and good they were for each other, he really listened to her”? Bullshit. Red Flag. A HUGE one.
Jess wears a mask for society, Dean is wearing a mask for Rory. There’s absolutely nothing from this point on that could make me like Dean. He just gets worse and worse from here.
And to answer the question, as Rocky’s son I hope Jess would hire someone to smash Dean’s face against concrete and see if that would make that fake innocent mask fall without having to waist a sweat with that piece of garbage.
Also “tHiS iS mY tOwN”???? Boy, you were the new kid just a few months before Jess arrived, what are you talking about?! He makes me cringe 😂

Young Jess sucks but Dean is no prize either.

Dean is just giving Jess a taste of his own medicine, and I'm totally fine with it. The vampires don't deserve as much heat as Jess. As for who would win in a fight, assuming no one stops the fight, Dean would win, if he had a strong enough motivation to clean Jess's clock, like Jess, in some way, hurting Rory. Even though there's reason to be ticked at Rory for mooning over Jess while they were together, that would not have happened if Jess hadn't inserted himself into her life, actively trying to get her, even before she was attracted to him. So, Jess treating Rory bad, would get Dean fired up enough to pound him.

Everyone in town insisted on blaming Jess solely for what happened, and Rory fought against that saying she had equal blame. I think Dean (though having been hurt by Rory) also sees her through this lens of, “it wasn’t her fault.” The feelings she still has for Dean cloud the sense of justice she felt before. My maternal granparents divorced before I was even born. My grandmother remarried. But it had been a divorce on good terms. My biological grandfather was still invited and participating in all the family events. He was still part of it all. Besides, both men had been friends since young years, before meeting my granny, and both had developped a crush on her since she started working as a waitress in their favourite bar with skittle alley. Definitely a somewhat weird situation I guess. (Edit 11:00 I don't know about a possible "transition" phase between my biological grandparents. If there was one at at and how they handled it. As far as my memories go back, they were at good terms)
Also, I did not really get it until at some point in primary shool. In fact, I never knew my paternal grandparents. They died before my birth. So I had 2 grandfathers, like most of my peers, and thought nothing of it. Until I got it. And that even as there was a family photo of my granny and step-gramps wedding were I was on the arms of my father. I was under 3.
    Just wanted to share.
My own parents divorce on the other hand was very very ugly. And my father especially ist still full of hatred and bitterness for my mother. Who died last november at almost 62 only. He is so happy about that it's disgusting.

There’s the occasional Christmas and birthday card but that’s about it. Her children, my step-siblings with whom we used to be fairly close, again have not reached out once since his funeral, how should I take that? I want to reconnect with them, but if that’s not something they want then I do want to respect that. We are all adults now, and were at the time of his passing, so I just don’t know how to perceive their behavior towards me and my sister. It felt like an additional loss after my father’s death

    • @eb7446
      @eb7446 4 месяца назад +1

Possibly. I think it could have gone that way.
The only thing is there is at least one scene later that paints Dean in a light that isn't just "dumb teenage" stuff and does have more serious implications.
And Jess, fortunately. Is able to dig deep enough later to not go down that route. Oh, he could have, but clearly there was something in him that made him decide he did not want to be that person. I could easily imagine Jess playing psychological mind games with his partners if he leaned into his worst instincts as he got older though.
As far as we know Dean doesn't evolve into anything worse than his worst scene(OK. I'm just going to say it even though I don't want to spoil). SPOILER:
The scenes within Lindsey at the start of S5. Her standing over him all dressed up and looking nervous until she sees she cooked the roast correctly, and he just looks miserable the entire time. Imo the framing of that scene is far more unsettling than the show probably intended at the time, and as an adult it gives me the heeby-jeebies in a way it didn't as much as a teenager. So when people say Dean gives off potential DV vibes, it's not a completely off the rails impression based on a few things.
But you know, he never shows a hint of physically aggression towards any women. Though I don't think any male character in this show does, as in coming towards them in a threatening way, or physically grabbing them in an argument ect. Not that kinda show.

@@eb7446totally agree and that season all of Dean’s scenes at home gave me that vibe. Of course my danger sensors actually perked up the first season at the Chilton Dance when he told Tristan to leave him alone because “I’ll m-rder you!” as he pushed him away. Seemed too aggressive and the character never sat right with me after that scene.

    • @eb7446
      @eb7446 4 месяца назад +2

Honestly, that scene at the dance never, ever bothered me the dozens of times I watched this as a teen.
It always came across to me as a guy who would passionately defend and protect you, when I watched this then. I can see that maybe that's not the most ideal take away from that.
And I want to give him some grace here and say, he was a teenager who felt he had the right to defend himself by any means against these rich kids who would treat him as inferior, as less worthy. Though, he was never in any physical danger so maybe his reaction was out of proportion. It's a reaction I can understand at least. It should be something that needs to be paid attention to, imo ideally by a trusted adult who could address these things.
This is where I feel kinda justified in calling out the bias from this channel(which I think is a great channel btw) because what if Jess had threatened someone with "I'll kill you"? Would it be taken more seriously? With Dean, I get seeing this interaction as an angry teenage boy who reached his limits vs a boy with more privilege acting like an asshole. Because it is that, but it's a worthwhile thing to discuss....why you condemn one character more easily than another.

I always thought dean was like this with her post breakup because he was doing the same thing as Jess but the "right" way and I say that with sarcasm because scheming to ruin someones relationship isn't ever a good thing. But he sees himself as like a savior hes gonna save her from the damage Jess with inflict where as Jess saw her as someone to corrupt and than someone to win and a prize to have. I think both of the guys are very toxic. Do I think Rory isn't to blame absolutely not because while she started hanging out with Jess to help Luke and from a place of love she was being warned by ALL of her loved ones that he wasn't a good thing and he wasn't doing good things even when being "nice" to her. He was playing a part to get her not actually being genuine with her. I think everyone in this situation just needs to step back and chill out. Which happens later but that doesn't end any better until they stop talking all together. I will say though Rory was being emotionally manipulated by both of them so while she does make choices and she is her own person. She 100 % was being manipulated on both ends by both of them

She was so quick to judge Dean for putting school on hold and placed blame on his wife Lindsey. That’s just life. Sh*t happens. There’s nothing wrong with encouraging others to pursue more for themselves, but Rory viewed college as an all or nothing solution. Sometimes I wondered if Rory pushed the idea of college on Dean because she was concerned of his image as her boyfriend. (Perhaps I’m projecting here.)

As for Dean taking the breakup out on Jess and not Rory, I get it because Jess did instigate him a lot while he was pursuing Rory, however I do feel Dean should realize that in the end it was Rory who was in the relationship with him and it was her who betrayed that and who ultimately hurt him. I do feel a lot of people tend to that tho, where they blame the 3rd party when their significant other cheats. While I do feel if the third person knows about you it doesn’t make them a great person for doing that but for all intents and purposes, they don’t owe you anything because they aren’t the ones committed to you in anyway.

She could've distanced herself from Jess when she noticed she might be developing the first feelings - if she wanted this not to happen -, she could've had the guts to tell Dean, ... But Jess DID a lot of provoking before, he behaved like an arse to anyone but Rory and still Rory wouldn't want to see just how much of a jerk he was. So ... Dean has every right to be angry for all that provoking.
