Great video! I have tremendous respect for all of our dedicated Canadian health care professionals, although imperfect it still remains as tops in the world. Throughout the pandemic our B.C. Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry was unrelenting in her personal & professional guidance & dedication during such a turbulent time. With my own personal experiences with my Doctor & Specialists in Vancouver I have NO complaints about their care. Including two more Doctors that I trust are Zalzal & Weening!

Wait times for elective surgery, understaffing, etc. are definately big issues, but it's helped me and my family out immensely.
Love that there is diologue and education about this.
Why have thing been ignored so long and why are we so short in access to doctors.
Patients are scared and avoiding going to hospital were they can, staff are overworked and burned out.
It is time to put patients first , we should feel safe when we go to hospital .
This crisis has been coming down the pipeline.

We need to teach health in every class in school from kindergarten to graduation to encourage health and increase or improve our well being and reduce pressure on the system
Good to see clinicians together with administrators giving the same message. Having used public and private healthcare services in the UK and Qatar, private get the non clinical actions and patient communications to a much better standard than public. Appointments, front of house services, environment, phone calls, emails, information provision, lead times, WhatsApp contact all are usually better. Emergency, acute and cancer are usually far better at public and avoided by private because of costs. So my question is why does public hospital administration fall below commercial standards?

Fascinating! So many issues to deal with and to integrate into each other to make it work at its best. I like that high up people are willing to look at what others are doing that is successful. Too many times ego gets in the way of doing that---yet it is so important to learn what others have already figured out to be successful. The world in general needs people like your CEO.
Love these videos. I hope Ms. Farrell is aware how helpful Dr. Paul and Dr. Brad's videos are. I have knee issues and I constantly refer to their videos for help and great advice. They answer so many questions I have. They are invaluable!!!
AI is already in healthcare. My doctor was using AI to record audio, transcribe and summarize my visit. There was a special consent process, but not sure exactly what happened for people who said no

As an outsider somethings you didn't touch on are things that prevent proper recruitment and hiring of nurses instead of the government giving so much healthcare money to nursing agencies. Another would be how the government years ago dealt with family physicians such as removing their hospital privilege's and capping their wages effectively lowering their wages to the point where years later now we find so many graduates not being drawn to the family physician position leading us to the shortage in Ontario we now find ourselves in. Fast tracking new immigrants into the field I don't really believe is a solution.
Had a stroke 8 days into the pandemic... Quarantine meant no Toothpaste, no fresh underwear, nothing in or out... I met the most beautiful hard working people... Nurses are the best... Oh and the Polish cleaning lady was my fav.... While she was caring for an elderly lady outside of work who had an emergency, at the same time the apartment she was renting out had a fire... and she still did everything for everyone... Bless you darling... and go Arsenal...

The time I spent on commitees at OTMH was among the most rewarding times of my life. Raising money for the new hospital was an eye opener. On the public vs private issue, there is a model somewhere somehow where the two can coexist to patients benefit. Living now in Costa Rica where we have both systems in place, I can tell you it works. Is it perfect, no, but neither is a 100% private system. Great work Docs.
Great video guys. I've been watching your vids for 2 years or so, and only today have i found out that you people are Canadians, rather than the Americans I had assumed. Like you, we in the UK have a publicly funded healthcare system, but I don't think it is managed anywhere near as well as your system. If i had a message for your CEO it is this: Don't get bogged down with bureaucracy. This is the central problem in the Uk, the ratio of non-medical staff to healthcare professionals is way too much in favour of the bureaucrat. This sucks the life out of any organisation, swallowing a much larger proprtion of the money that it should do. Hopefully, you guys won't fall into that trap. Keep it up.
After several previous years managing a division of private-for-profit home care in SW Ont., I relate to Ms. Farrell’s assessment concerning staffing and the current challenges faced in the provision of client care. Staffing in earlier days was significantly easier given that many of our nurses, physio’s etc. were often semi-retired compassionate professionals, wishing a change to part-time (or reduced hrs) vs the rigours of a full-time hospital setting. We could never match the compensation i.e. pensions or benefits offered by the gov’t institutions however the draw to home care was establishing one’s own schedule along with some choices in client matching the professional’s skill-set and of course, a love for health care. Today’s challenges are significantly greater given those previous semi-retirees, are retired…with few post COVID interested in filling the void. Staffing will continue to be one of if not the greatest issue facing the industry! As usual, great and timely video, thanks guys!

In the US … Medicare for all. Govt support. The US healthcare system is a truly disastrous beast.
I loved working in healthcare but I don't like the direction it has taken! Glad to be retired! Everything is corporate! And Gov't is so corrupt! Hospitals have lost a lot of good healthcare workers! So disheartening!

Really enjoyed this video. I loved hearing about Melissa’s journey to CEO…what a great background and passion she has. Being from the US I can’t fully understand your socialized medicine system. Also, I don’t understand what it would be like to feel like I couldn’t afford quality healthcare. Usually if someone works full-time for a company they qualify for health insurance. A certain amount of money gets deducted from your paycheck to pay for the health insurance. There have been times when a surgical procedure could cost thousands of dollars out of pocket, but usually regular visits, labs and meds are mostly covered. As you know, we’ve tried to go to a socialized system with not only much opposition but much anticipated, difficult change as well. I recently paid about $3000 out of pocket for my R TKA. Thanks for all you do. You are both so passionate about your vocations.
One problem of the insurance based system is when the patient’s treatment costs hit the cap set by their premiums. An American friend paid for a million dollar plan all his life, got brain cancer and was sent home to die when the money quickly ran out. Another, not sick, was told that he could only be treated in a very few hospitals in Michigan, so he and his wife couldn’t even travel Americas, let alone overseas, which was their retirement dream.

Docs and CEO, I am 71 years old on Medicare and also a Medicare supplement that I pay monthly. I just spent 30 days in the hospital and a PT rehab facility here in Florida. I have myeloma that fractured my back which required surgery with rods and cement, needless to say it was expensive although I basically have paid very little. Both facilities treated me wonderful, I have no complaints and healing well. Where I see a lot of wasted time looking at the bills Medicare paid is the going back and forth where one bill was $3000.00 Medicare paid the Dr. $300.00 and all the bills are this way. Being a retired business owner I would set our labor prices to be competitive, it would be hard to own a business with someone telling you what you could charge. I live in Florida and the Doctors office and the Oncologist I go to are full of old people like me, I would think the Doctors would have to set a limit on how many Medicare patients they treat. Emergency rooms are always full and patients have to sleep in the corridors of the hospital and wait time until we meet the specialist in an emergency department.
After one year, we get a specialist appointment.
One doctor only takes decisions based on the previous doctors.
Lots of ortho surgeries, in the private system, on the weekends here in Ottawa 😕.

Hey Doc,s that was a marvellous episode your CEO is lovely CEO here in Australia are generally Crusty old men and women who if they smiled would need facial reconstructive surgery😊😊.We have a major problem here called Ramping our Ambulances sit at hospitals waiting to get their patients into ED waiting times blow out to 12 hours due to lack of Doc,s and Nurses in our ED to diagnose and treat patients ,Patients are Ubering food to the Ambulances waiting on the Ramp our Medical people Ambo,s Docs Nurses are doing the best they can but our Government dont seem to be able to find a solution .If you have private health insurance cover you can go to a private Hospital and get treated straight away ,as a Boomer i have always paid for Private Health Insurance but looking ahead at the mess the Government Hospitals are in im lucky .I had a TKR last June private all the way got it done 3 weeks after seeing my surgeon,my mate who doesnt have private Health he,s waiting on the Public system 2 years and waiting ,he always laughed at me waisting money my money on private health insurance ,im having the last laugh .Thanks Paul Brad fantastic channel

Why do governments and hospital departments have to spend their yearly budget? If $x is spent on average every year, + inflation increases, why not have that as an estimated amount needed? What I see and hear about here is, for example, new flooring (what's wrong with 3 year old flooring?), take out 5 year old landscaping, put in new planrs, etc. Why not have departments try to save some money to put towards new equipment upgrades that are coming?

I appreciate the complexities of our healthcare system but access to specialist seems to be compromised at our hospital. 31 year old daughter with no family history presents with seizures & no Neurologist on site and send home to wait months/year. Grandson with suspected broken arm, went to hospital, X-rays and send home with instructions to ice arm. Two days later Radiologist calls come back your arm IS broken. Definitely a disconnect. Worrisome.

Here in the States, our Medicare system is a great social system. But if you are under 65, good luck.
Listen to the nurses. They will tell you what the health care system needs.
For the most part, but they’re a bit selfish, always asking for more money every year or two. Money is important to it so are a lot of other things.
I bet it's nice not to have to pay an arm & a leg for private health insurance so that you don't go bankrupt, like down here in the U.S. 😅
