I have a newfound respect for these crazy Double Necks. They are a lot of fun to play and I highly suggest you try one out. While 13k isn't affordable for most people, there are less expensive Epiphone versions and even most used (non-signature) ones can be had for around 3-4k. You can't help but smile playing one of these behemoths!

    Very interesting.
The sympathetic output from the side of the guitar not being played does add evidence to the whole tone-wood debate.
What I've read is that Vintage pickups were many times microphonic in nature. The belief is that the microphonics of the pickup(s) actually add to the overall tone of a vintage instrument. If the wood does indeed vibrate and add to the overall sound (and this would be expected as certain woods are resonate in nature) then the microphonic pickups would reproduce these sounds/harmonics and include these additional sounds/tones/harmonics and frequencies into the guitar's pickups output.
So even though some have argued that tone-wood is a myth we here have clear evidence that the wood is resonating and inducing signal output in the other pickups.
As I stated earlier, very, very interesting.
So in theory as long as you have a guitar with a resonate piece of wood and slightly microphonic pickups you should have a pretty good sounding instrument.
This whole thing kind of proves out why my custom built R9 sounds so good with un-potted Burstbucker #1 and #2 pickups as those un-potted pickups are indeed microphonic.

My good buddy who I played in a band with while attending college had one of these (I believe manufactured at some point in the '70s - he owned it from the '90s until some point in the 2000s, good condition, although the case smelled no matter what was done to it!), and I ended up spending quite a bit of time with it (as he absolutely hated stringing his many guitars as is, so suffice to say, he hated the process on this guitar 3 times as much!). Playing on the "off" neck while the "on" neck sympathetically resonates is definitely a fun, unique sound. I last had custody of it sometime around '04-'05, and your description of the neck profile, the overall feel brings back memories for me - I think you pretty much nailed it. I guarantee he paid a LOT less than $13K, for his (waiting for him to text me back what he paid back then).

Yeah. You can get a custom shop "standard" model (i.e., not some weird Rick Nielsen quintuple neck) from pretty much any manufacturer for less than $5k. Anything more than that is paying for stuff other than materials and craftsmanship. You're paying for a name, some collector value, or you're buying a display piece.
I've even played with Kiesel's custom builder and can't even break $5k on a ridiculous all-exotic wood multiscale 8 string.

The signal is quieter in the middle because the pickups connect in parallel. Same reason the middle position on on a two-pickup guitar gives a smaller signal than either pickup individually, or why a humbucker gives a smaller signal with its coils connected parallel vs. series.
I made a 6-over-6 doubleneck so I could switch between open E and standard EADGBE tuning, and ended up wiring the two sets of pickups in series to avert the volume loss when both are on. I also had to put a capacitor in series to reduce loss of treble, but it seems to work. Not as well as an active buffer and mixing circuit would, but the control cavity of this guitar is already too crowded without a preamp!

I hope the right people at Gibson see this video and work to stop the bad quality control. My guess is someone covered their tracks with the mistake under the pick guard for fear of losing their job. If Gibson cannot police quality control across such a high profile and extravagant run of only 125 guitars, they will forever remain known as a company that produces SOME great guitars amongst A LOT of rough. Many of us love good Gibson guitars but we are conflicted when we see such lack of QC. Great demo thank you, but still feeling flat about Gibson as a guitar brand. 🙁

Drop in output in middle ( both ) neck selector position is because you now have four 8K ohm pickups in parallel, 8k \ 4 = 2k , or in other words you have two guitars plugged in but you're playing only one.

I have a '72 ES-335 with nary a check mark on it. It would pain me deeply to see my Es-335 looking like that.
I did have a '63 SG that was full of checking when I bought it in '70. But the checking was mostly across the body and NOT lengthwise. Here in Minnesnowta the biggest reason for checking is not letting your guitar warm up slowly before opening the case after it's been sitting inside your car in subzero weather.

Slash did an interview with Guitarist magazine showing off his collection back in 98 if I remember rightly. He actually owns a number of double neck guitars one of which was a Guild in trans green one neck was acoustic the other was electric. I think he also had one Gibson in red as well.

It's disappointing the 55 point inspection didn't catch that truss rod issue, the pick guard screw I could live with. Maybe they just thought most of them would be a wall hanger decoration, but that's no excuse. I still don't get the relic guitars, kind of like buying a new truck and having them break out the windows before you drive it, but that's just my opinion. Great review as always, Thank You.

In my band the other guys have a couple of these. The white one and two red ones. Really cool and not as expensive as this Signature ones. You get similar results. I guess the neck pickup on these has a higher output because Slash mostly does his melodic solos there. I've tried the Epiphone version and is pretty close, so, guys, don't break the bank unless you're a fan or a collector. I even went cheaper to get into the double neck game with a gorgeous golden Danelectro double neck. I use it a lot because I get most arpeggio parts anyway. So it's the type of guitar you get as soon as you need it. ⚡️⚡️⚡️
