When I camped in my mini van in the cold, I was super happy to have remote start. When I got too cold, I could start the van without getting out from under the covers. It runs for 10 minutes then shuts itself back off. Really helped.
If I know I am going to be in cold weather , I boil some water in the evening and put it in a thermos so I can have a cup of tea while waiting for my butane stove to warm up.
Yes, I was going to post that. When I car camped, I even made my coffee the night before, but having hot water can give you a beverage and oats, too! 😁👍
There’s a thing called an AirPot, 3L or 5L ones too, I’d keep it on the floor and bungee cord it to a wall. I have a smaller jug type one and it does keep water hot for ages, I get about 15-18hr out of mine 🫖
One thing you can do is park your van so your windshield is pointed southeast or south. When the sun rises it will shine thru the windshield and help warm up the van.

Slept with butane in bed, as advised (in a sock.) As soon as it cooled to van temp after installing it in the stove and lighting, it reduced the flame so it just burned up butane without boiling the water. ☹️ Finally heated the cannister by the Mr. Heater Buddy so I could cook. We keep learning!

Interesting how our bodies can adjust. One year I spent two weeks in Minnesota with a friend. When I left Florida it was 70° . I arrived in Minnesota to MINUS 11° ! Friend kept her house at 55° due to high cost of fuel. We wore long johns & sweat or corduroy pants & turtleneck sweaters every day. Very comfy. Sun shone every day & temps never got above 30° outside. I went for long walks every day. Loved it. Slept great ! Had fun cooking with friend. She drove us to get groceries etc. Roads all clear . Sidewalks mostly cleared too. Realized I could live in cold country if could be in 55° during day.

Wonderful series of winter camping. I love winter camping, and my sleep seems to be deeper. I use a NEMO 15-degree bag and sleep in shorts and sometimes with a hoodie when it's in the teens. I have the same stove. At night after making hot chocolate or tea, I remove the butane canister and place it in a wool sock and wrap a towel around it. The butane lights immediately when re-inserted into the stove. I bought a metal cylinder that sits perfectly on the stove and when the stive is lit, the heat radiates outwardly allowing some heat to rise. I use this in the morning only. There is a small butane heater that uses the same canister for your stove. It's called the Covea Cupid Heater, same concept as the Mr. Heater Buddy, but in a much smaller form. It heats my van in five minutes; then I turn it off.
Dee you're very smart hope you stay warm. If you can you should invest in a remote start for your van. you're a brave and strong woman. Keep your beautiful smile. I think you're awesome woman. Thanks for your videos. ❤️❤️❤️🌹
Sleeping in cold weather is a challenge for me. I’m always cold, due to low iron, so a heat source is ALWAYS a blessing. Instead of the short, rectangular/square hot water bottle, I purchased one that is rather long and thin. It’s about 1.5ft long, which is super nice, cuz all more of my body is adjacent to the warmth it provides. Blankets make all the difference, as do socks. Gotta keep socks on in the cold. Even with these additions, I still need more to stay even remotely comfortable. Thus, I have my canine/feline companions who are veritable live furnaces!! Their cuddles are welcome, for sure. :-)
Good Sunday morning, Dee. I think u are very brave to winter camp in A NON 4 SEASON rig. I want to give it a try eventually; hubby not so much! Have a blessed day. LUCRETIA

Thank you....your videos are great!
Hello Dee, all I can say is they must breed 'em tough in your part of the world!!! Aussies might have buck Roos, myriads of poisonous snakes, spiders and box jelly fish but "that ain't nothing" compared to your "trial by ice" ( not fire). Lady Bug out sure looks cozy! Stay warm. Looking forward to the next video.😁👍👍
Hi, congratulations on your winter camping. You are brave and courage to even try it out. My son has a -40 sleeping bag that might help. We just came back from an overnight winter camping but it was warm compared to you , 37 Fahrenheit. We had flanelette sheets, each other and our little dog who is like a hot water bottle. Hihi. We love watching your videos and your set up. Stay well, safe and happy trails. Looking forward to the next one. (Ann and Emile from Quebec, Canada.)
Thank you Ann and Emile. It was not as miserable as I thought it would be, and it’s not something I would seek to do often. But I’m glad to know I can if I needed to.
Another thing I do is store my butane canisters in a soft cooler wrapped inside a heavy towel. When I need a new butane canister they work immediately. I usually buy a 12-can case to restock.
Just a couple of thoughts...1). if you are having issues with your butane, you can help to alleviate that by wrapping the canister in something to reduce the cold, this works for me. I use a couple of socks. 2). I have found a balaklava great for keeping my head and face warm on really cold nights. Good luck, and stay warm. !!!!
I have a light synthetic down blanket I put over my head when tent camping in extreme cold so I don't breath humidity into my sleeping bag and I pull my hat over my nose so it stays warm...slept fine in -10F. The wool blanket or a packing blanket for top layer is a necessity for sure! Thank you for all the information Dee!
Very useful video. I’ve camped overnight in my NV200 when the outside temp was low twenties. Very doable but over an extended period probably not real comfortable! Thanks for posting part I and II.
Great video...put ut butane under the covers....also during the nite you can use ur butane stove 15 to 30 min intervals..to keep warm...love ur little red van setup...also you should have put the overalls...in thr bed so they would be warm when slipping them on..happy travels
Hi again DEE Well you survived the test yay! The upside is you now know you can do it if necessary or if for some crazy minute you want to do that to yourself for the fun of it lol lol! It truly seems like alot of doings for you to get through but you were a trooper. The tent for your head actually would be smart at those low temps as the greatest and fastest heat loss is from our heads! You're still in your see what works mode and think already what you've learned!! Thx as always for the update and catcha next time. Stay safe and warm too...
It’s a great video again. I always look forward with excitement to your videos and they never disappoint. You are a courageous inspiring beautiful lady. Stay safe, warm and very blessed🌹warm regards from Dutch Caribbean☀️
This why I left Nebraska after living the through 2 winter! Everything you do took three time longer. I don't miss being in the freezing temperature one bit!🥶 On the plus side, you don't need a fridge to keep the meat from getting spoiled!🤣
What an awesome experiment. It would be so nice to be able to start your car BEFORE getting out of bed. I don’t recall if it was a particular make/model of vehicle but I remember seeing them up north. Stay warm. Stay safe.
Good morning Dee! You can do it with the equipment you have, many folks are not as willing to face discomfort as much as you. I have motorcycle/tent camped below freezing temps, but didn't enjoy it much. (Kinda hate waking up cold then moving around fast to get a fire going.) If you wait until June/July you will be fine to go to Alaska. I'd like to see the vid's. At least consider going in a caravan of 2 or 3, lot's of places along the way are a long way from anywhere! Also consider a ride on the Alaska Marine Highway System. It's a bit expensive, but you get the water view a lot cheaper than a cruise. I rode it from Haines AK to Prince Rupert BC, and really enjoyed the experience. At least check it out and think on it. (And don't forget "The Milepost"!) Roll onward!
@@LadyBugout You will love it! Haines and Talkeetna are two towns I think you would really like. Palmer too has a small sort of center and a nice Alaskan garden at the Visitor's Center, one of my fave places to eat lunch when I worked near there. But Talkeetna is our chosen town and it has a pretty laid back vibe. And ah Dee... I have to figure out that Patreon darn it, get connected on that!! Note to self... maybe in June. As soon as the garden is completely planted.
Hi Dee great video, loved the scenery oh I could paint these scenes wow! You are so bold to try out a trip in the cold, and the snow, I am so sad your hand has not fully healed, do take care still looks very bruised! And you lighting a fire at night in the middle of nowhere so brave, I think you can be My knight! loverly to see you calm one-handed! In England, it is illegal to camp just anywhere! only campsites or farms for a price. Lots of people do boondock in Cognito. such a shame that gipsies cause us all their trouble dumping rubbish everywhere, they wreck every place they go steeling etc! not saying all gipsies are the same but most are. I would love to do what you do, here. Still love watching in in the outback, all my love Ken xxx
Thank you Ken! It was not as bad as I expected. Yes, here too, there are some who do not respectfully wild camp. It is sad. But enough of us care to hopefully counter that. It’s all we can do. ☺️
I'm just kind of amazed that you leave the door open because you lose all the heat you just warmed your car up with. I guess you don't mind the winter like I do. I freakin' hate being cold and hate winter! I'm not living in a vehicle yet, but hope to in the future. My current plan is to live in New England April or May to maybe the first week in November so I will have to deal with some cold nights. Hopefully I'll have one of those gasoline heaters like Webasto or similar. Then go to FL and/or AZ for the rest of the year.
Hi Dee, we’re glad that you are healing up!! We usually heat up with the stovetop and the van heater as well. Hope to see you some time soon!! Hope all else is going well!!
Since I don't have a noggle I close the side vents, place my curtains toward the front/middle and it creates a corridor of sorts that sends the warm air from the middle vents straight back to me in the sleeping area.
I camped outdoors in a tent once in very cold weather. I didn't have much with me - long story - but I found warmth by taking my sheet (probably two together) and making a "tent" in a tent with the sheet over my body to contain the bodily warmth in the air about me. I left a small hole up by my head so I could get fresh air to breath. You mentioned something like that - and trust me, it worked.
Yes! I have tried it since. I used one of those light felt blankets. I’ll have to show it in one of my videos. Hard to explain😛 but you have the same basic idea!!!
We need to get you a small portable heater’! You being cold doesn’t weigh to good on my mind! I use to winter camp in Michigan a lot, I know what cold is! I do camp often here in Northern Arizona year round and in winter it’s gets mighty cold here in winter! Butane doesn’t do well in cold! Having said all that I still think you’re gorgeous and smart’ true story! LOL! Check for incoming today
Hi Dee, I saw this yesterday and liked as always but just now viewed bobs latest about milo meloy's build. He has a small usb powered electric heater, that might help you.
@@LadyBugout Getting there. Still no power on at my place, so I’m sort of in a holding pattern at the moment where being at my place to clean stuff is boring and lonely. LOL! Once we finally get power again and can move back home, then I feel like I’ll be able to put in a more concentrated effort to getting things clean. None of the stuff that’s left is going to go mouldy, so it’s all a matter of just working my way through it slowly. I really want to be able to go home.
@@coralieofjumpwithnofear I’m glad to hear it’s getting there little bu little. I hope the power gets back on soon. It has to be so hard to not have your home. Hugs to you woman!
The really inexpensive light fleece throws or blankets work really well for a "tent" over your head. They dry really fast and they hold up well to abused. It is ok if they seem thin, because it allows air exchange. Always check the clearance areas at Target, Wal-Mart, Walgreens, Dollar General or variety stores. The mylar emergency blankets are great for under and beside your for reflective heating, but if you put it over you it will trap moisture. Thank you for taking us along on your winter camping. Safe travels.
I have family who live in Alaska and they need to plug in an electric blanket to keep their vehicle battery from freezing / dying, so if you do go there, please just be aware of when to go...summers in Alaska are absolutely gorgeous!
Hi Dee! Super fun watching your adventures. I watched your “What I Wear”. Video and it was a great escape and informative too! I know you mentioned that you make your own toothpaste, which is intriguing to me. It made me think it might make for a fun video of beauty routine. How you make your toothpaste, what you pack/use for your hair, and how you take care of your skin on the road. Thank you for all the work you share, much appreciated!
Ok, Dee... no need to respond to all my comments, because I am catching up, but this was a great video and I learned a lot from it. I probably over commented on the Alaska bits too... but I am from there and couldn't help it! I am disappointed the coupe warmer did not work, drew too much power. We have a 12 volt connection in the back area and I am hoping that we can run the coupe warmer while we are driving TO a destination, so that it is warm in the back when we get there. Having ice cold furnishings and walls would make it miserable. We are putting a fan on top and I have some ideas for venting, so that we might be able to run a candle heater for a bit. In a small space, that should warm up quickly. Anyway, babbling, but so much food for thought. And THANK YOU for making this video!! I love that you did this.... in Norway, that blue light when the sun is going down...they call it the blue hour, blåtimen. Beautiful! And yes, the felt tent blanket is inspired. Happy travels... Lynne
Just found your channel. Love it. Your winter camping reminds me of a time when my kids were little I took them camping. The weather unexpectedly dropped into the teens. With only the car as a source of heat and not wanting to sleep with 3 kids and a dog in a car I gathered up some rocks from around the bonfire put them in my cast iron pot. Covered the pot. Put the pot under the covers and a fancy bedwarmer. Toasty all night.
I post every Saturday at noon. So, if you’re subscribed and have the notification bell on for my channel, you should know when I post. Glad you found me anyway☺️
Omg I give you so much credit to deal with that cold and everything freezing. Then all that extra you do to fold up your bed every morning. I would either have to drive to warm Temps or have some kind of heat in there.
So grateful for your efforts and helpful info. You are such an inspiration to many. Upcoming van trip, solo. Do not want to allow all the negativity and fear of solo traveling discourage, suggestions. Thank you and blessings.
Thank you Joanne. I think the best suggestion I’ve ever heard was follow your gut. Do what feels safe for you and then keep venturing beyond that little by little. You will find that it is not as scary as you thought. But go at your own pace and do what you can to push yourself each time to go out of your comfort zone. ☺️🐞🚗
Thanks for sharing! Too cold for me :) Unfortunate butane does not work well at freezing, I bought a dual fuel stove like yours just in case, or as others have suggested waming up butane bottle before use, and some of the stoves will self heat the bottle as well :) Safe travels and all the BEST! Cheers :)
That’s good to know. I do keep my reserve butane wrapped in reflectix inside wool socks. I probably could’ve used one of those. But it didn’t take long to warm it up.☺️
yikes, I don't like being cold but since I live in Ontario and I don't like turning my home heat up, I dress vvery warm and have slippers even in the house. I'm thinking maybe you need a little heater for those just in case times. Do you have a battery, I can't remember? Like a jackery or something.
I also live in Ontario, I hate the cold. I have camped as late as late October. As long as overnight is above freezing, I am fine. I don’t like running any type of heater when I sleep. When water freezes inside your rig, that’s time to leave. I admire Dee for trying.
This is a great video, you are definitely brave. I was raised in NY and can’t stand the cold, moved to Florida when I turned 20 and now have lived for over 40 years and have no desire to be cold again not to mention my health has been so much better since living in Florida. But I have spent time in colder places which is a great reminder why I live in Florida. Too funny that your water turned to ice. Another great video, travel safe and have amazing adventures.
That was some experiment!! Can't say I've ever woken up to a frozen liquid beside me... You gave me a lot to think about as I set out with my minivan. Blessings Dee

Thank you....your videos are great!
Yes. I was trying to see how I’d do if I didn’t have any power. But electric blankets are great when you can hook up to shore power!🤗
Thank you Maurice. Yes, but you know how to deal with the heat 😜
What a beautiful person you are... keep putting out the videos...and I'll keep watching
Thank you!☺️🐞🚗
The scenery is beautiful, but I think you're missing the snowbird concept a bit here. 😄
Yep! Not something I plan to do regularly.🐞
That's a great idea!
I always enjoy your videos , hope to see you some time on the road. Safe travels🤗💕
Thank you Rita! I enjoy hearing from you. Thank you for all the positivity you pass my way🥰
Just a couple of thoughts...1). if you are having issues with your butane, you can help to alleviate that by wrapping the canister in something to reduce the cold, this works for me. I use a couple of socks. 2). I have found a balaklava great for keeping my head and face warm on really cold nights. Good luck, and stay warm. !!!!
Great tips. Thank you☺️
I have a light synthetic down blanket I put over my head when tent camping in extreme cold so I don't breath humidity into my sleeping bag and I pull my hat over my nose so it stays warm...slept fine in -10F. The wool blanket or a packing blanket for top layer is a necessity for sure! Thank you for all the information Dee!
Thank you Sarah!☺️
A small heater plugged in to your jackery and a 9 volt electric blanket. You would be extremely cozy
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Very useful video. I’ve camped overnight in my NV200 when the outside temp was low twenties. Very doable but over an extended period probably not real comfortable! Thanks for posting part I and II.
Agreed. Doable, not real comfortable. But nice to know it’s possible☺️
I'm so glad that I found your videos, I am binging and I love watching them. I would like to try camping in a van in the cold, and in rainstorms too.
Thank you Doris! So glad they are helpful. That’s why I do them🤗
Great video...put ut butane under the covers....also during the nite you can use ur butane stove 15 to 30 min intervals..to keep warm...love ur little red van setup...also you should have put the overalls...in thr bed so they would be warm when slipping them on..happy travels
Yes, several others have said the same thing! Great tips ☺️🐞🚗
@@LadyBugout i hope u have a great day! ....and thanks for taking ur time and responding to me....I love ur sass and pioneer spirit!
Hi again DEE
Well you survived the test yay!
I did! Yes, I still have a lot to learn!🐞🥶☺️
I love your channel! You make everything seem doable. I especially like that you don't have a fridge! ....Youngstown, Ohio
Thank you Marlo. Glad you enjoy the channel.🐞🚗☺️
It’s a great video again. I always look forward with excitement to your videos and they never disappoint. You are a courageous inspiring beautiful lady. Stay safe, warm and very blessed🌹warm regards from Dutch Caribbean☀️
I appreciate that encouragement more than you know!☺️
This why I left Nebraska after living the through 2 winter! Everything you do took three time longer. I don't miss being in the freezing temperature one bit!🥶 On the plus side, you don't need a fridge to keep the meat from getting spoiled!🤣
😂 I know…right?!?! Crazy cold.
What an awesome experiment. It would be so nice to be able to start your car BEFORE getting out of bed. I don’t recall if it was a particular make/model of vehicle but I remember seeing them up north. Stay warm. Stay safe.
Yeah… I don’t have a remote, but I just learned I can have one installed. That would be awesome 🤗
Yes! I would only go in summer there. This was more a what if scenario, to know that I could do it if need be.🤗
Good tips!! I love the Milepost!
I have it open to film mainly. Easier to see.🤗
@@LadyBugout, it was pretty out there.
Best part of winter… No bugs. Safe travels.
Yes…about the only good part lol 😂
Good for you
It was an interesting challenge!😜🥶☺️
Hi Dee, we’re glad that you are healing up!! We usually heat up with the stovetop and the van heater as well. Hope to see you some time soon!! Hope all else is going well!!
Miss you guys!!!🥰
Miss you too!! 😍
Please be careful and safe
I will. Thank you🐞🚗☺️
Since I don't have a noggle I close the side vents, place my curtains toward the front/middle and it creates a corridor of sorts that sends the warm air from the middle vents straight back to me in the sleeping area.
Perfect! That’ll do it🐞🚗💃🏻
Down booties are fairly cheap and good for inside your van on chilly nights, and inside bed when really cold
That’s a great idea Peter! I’ll look for some☺️
I camped outdoors in a tent once in very cold weather.
(Keep the "tent" in the tent low around your body, bur off your body allowing the heat to rise from you and hover in the air within the "tent.)
Yes! I have tried it since. I used one of those light felt blankets. I’ll have to show it in one of my videos. Hard to explain😛 but you have the same basic idea!!!
@@LadyBugout Note to self, buy felt blanket! 😂💕
..cool video keep up the great content.. Thank you…
Thank you☺️
@@LadyBugout Thank you very mutch... have a nice Weekend.... see you….
Awww. I used to have one. It just draws too much power. So this system works for the times that I’m in this situation!☺️
@@LadyBugout a small propane to heat it up! Then turn it off! With the price of gas propane will be good!
Hi Dee, I saw this yesterday and liked as always but just now viewed bobs latest about milo meloy's build. He has a small usb powered electric heater, that might help you.
I will check that out! Thanks Robert☺️
So much to like about this video, but definitely the gorgeous choice of music. ❤️
Awww thank you Coralie! How is everything going?
@@LadyBugout Thank you. ❤️
👍🏻 Good test
Thanks Darcy🥰
The really inexpensive light fleece throws or blankets work really well for a "tent" over your head. They dry really fast and they hold up well to abused. It is ok if they seem thin, because it allows air exchange. Always check the clearance areas at Target, Wal-Mart, Walgreens, Dollar General or variety stores. The mylar emergency blankets are great for under and beside your for reflective heating, but if you put it over you it will trap moisture. Thank you for taking us along on your winter camping. Safe travels.
That would be perfect. Thank you!☺️
Wow too cold for me. I'm getting ready to hit the road and head out but I'm not sure I can handle that much cold. 🥶
Yes. Heading to warmer weather myself. 🐞☺️🚗
Great job, you're a trooper for sure. Loving some of these comments. Many 👍 friend
Hahahah yep, me too!
I have family who live in Alaska and they need to plug in an electric blanket to keep their vehicle battery from freezing / dying, so if you do go there, please just be aware of when to go...summers in Alaska are absolutely gorgeous!
I have heard that. Yes, planning summer- not winter😜
Wonderful view!!! Makes the cold worth it ❤️ Happy vanning
It does indeed!!!!!
Great test on HOW COLD can you GO.
But when you build this tent make sure you are exhaling out side that tent and not to trap the moisture inside.
Thanks for the tip!🤗
Thanks for the tips on van life in the cold. Newly subscribed to your channel & enjoying traveling with LadyBugout. Safe travels
Thank you and welcome to the channel🐞🚗☺️
You answered so many questions I didn't know I had yet. Thank You!
Awww yep… it happens to me too😜
I did enjoy experimenting with you during your winter camping. The best part was not being there! LOL BRRRR… too cold.
Hahahah yep. I got outta there pretty quickly. I will not be doing that regularly but good to know I can if need be😛
@@LadyBugout you are a brave woman! Good on you for doing the winter test. Miss you guys at the Glamoground! :-(
Thank you Lynn! That’s a great idea. 🐞🚗🤗
Ok, Dee... no need to respond to all my comments, because I am catching up, but this was a great video and I learned a lot from it.
Put the pot
under the covers and a fancy bedwarmer. Toasty all night.
Nice! That sounds like quite the adventure😛
Consider keeping a few cans of Sterno
That’s a good idea! Thank you. ☺️
GLAD UR BK MISSED YA !
Yep. Not something I plan to do regularly. I don’t enjoy the cold very much🤗
So grateful for your efforts and helpful info.
You can get rechargeable pads about 3 ft in length for your bed, also rechargeable vests and socks that last about 10 hrs.
Meant to say rechargeable heated vests, socks, pads.
I'm not a van-lifer yet, just a wanna-be.. but i do have a jackery that i want to experiment with for sm electric heaters for a sm area like a van.
The heaters use a lot of battery power. But it is doable if you have a 500w or higher.
Yes. I have seen those. I was trying to see how I’d manage without all that.☺️
@@LadyBugout that's good to know, i have a 250 and a 1000. My dream would be a 3000 for off grid living. Very least a 1500 eventually.
What was that you shook onto your avocado? It looked delicious!
It’s called Tajín it is good☺️
🐞💙I've done some winter camping............................never again.

Hello Dee
Hello Alan🖐🏻
Poor thing it got freezing in your vehicle overnight!
It wasn’t as bad as I expected. But not something I will be doing regularly😛🥶☺️
Thanks very good video
Thank you Pat!☺️
Just had a thought
Here's an idea have your camp fire mid afternoon and trust me you may enjoy it more than the evening fire.
Good idea!☺️
With the Olympian you will have no problem witha tank of gas connection should be warmer than warm I love it
I will check it out. Thanks for the suggestion.🐞
But it didn’t take long to warm it up.☺️
@@LadyBugout Thank and glad to see your wrist is getting better! All the BEST :)
yikes, I don't like being cold but since I live in Ontario and I don't like turning my home heat up, I dress vvery warm and have slippers even in the house.
I do have a Jackery. And I did have a heater but it took up too much. It’s just as easy to turn it on!
Well done! Thank you for the great video. Keep safe and warm.

Thank you Kay! Yes, I am not a big fan of cold weather at all😛
That was some experiment!! Can't say I've ever woken up to a frozen liquid beside me... You gave me a lot to think about as I set out with my minivan. Blessings Dee
