I like him even more now because he didn't let what others think of him control his actions. If he had kept the beard out of fear of rejection from a particular group, then THAT would have been selling out. Selling out to please a others. But he did was right for him at this time. MORE POWER TO HIM! Love his music.
It actually a kind of inspiring story he grew the beard and wore the hat out of representation of faith but cut the beard to represent no fear of man in his faith journey. I can dig it.
Mr Matisyahu Miller, keep on going where your neshama takes you. I've learned alot about Judaism, Chabad Lubavitch, and others and myself in the past 15 yrs. You, and your music, are inspiring, and I finally saw you at the Jannus in St Pete 7 Nov 14. The best show ever! Bevakasha, shalom out
God damn, people stop it! His facial hair and religion doesn't make him a worse person, and is no reason for saying hurtful things. What makes a worse person is all your hateful comments! Peace out from a Norwegian atheist!
As an agnostic, I can careless for the religious note of your words. Yet, They are inspirational to some and that's a good thing. Me, I like your music and certain lyrics that are just spiritual. . That's is also good...for me.

This whole Matisyahu shaving his beard situation reminds of a time. A time when Sonny Sandoval lead singer of P.O.D. decided to cut his dreadlocks. People were over him about the issue.... Matisyahu has mainstream exposure, but uses this to bring a positive message to people listening, beard or no beard...Matisyahu cares about his fans and you can tell by the message of his music. Unlike that other garbage that is played on the radio.
He's still ortho the beard matters less than ppl think and you don't even know bc the requirement is only to reach a certain part of the face it can even look like sideburns...i was personallu alittle disappointed only bc matisyahu represented an Orthodox Jew that was cool and had good music i think he is a really positive influence on young observant Jews...i really hope his sudden shaving of facial hair doesn't send the message that he's goes off the derech to observant jews...
There is no requirement in Jewish law to have a beard (according to most authorities). Lubavitch is very into beards but it isn't the mainstream Orthodox view. The only law is that when you shave you can't use a razor (electric shavers are okay).
Why can't some people respect his personal spiritual journey? Saying that he should abandon the rest of his faith, or the rest of the symbols of his faith, or calling him and "outsider" now shows incredible lack of real thinking! Throughout history Rabbis have had different opinions on this, but some people prefer to be herd animals, not thinking for themselves and excluding anyone who does! Such sentiments show that such a one has a heart far from G-d's heart!
Based upon what I know of the Scriptures, the symbols have always been meant to point to something higher. They were never the end. If you have a beard to represent mercy but have not fully experienced God's mercy, then the symbol has not done what it was meant to. What is important is God's mercy. Remember that when He first called His people and showed His mercy that these symbols were not yet in place. If the symbol is taken away, is God changed? If they are placed back, is God changed?
I'd have to say, not so many people think like him. It's like seeing a Christian wearing a cross. It's just a symbol. That cross doesn't make you a Christian. Yea it represents something but it doesn't change a thing. If you're religious let god be the judge, nobody else.
theres been many great spiritual leaders who have never had beards! so how is not having a beard making a person less spiritual? i agree with the self discipline aspect of maintaining discipline to not cut it. but ultimately its not about the body but the being in the body. its not about the image but the essence within and behind the image. symbols come and go and change over time. to restict yourself is to frustrate the life within. he cut the bonds that were restricting him & shines brighter
So when Joseph shave his beard was it mercy for Egypt, yes it was. Even a Hebrew child can pass through circumcision, and yet it is years later the beard will grow. Yes there will always be a great message in the beard, but if the beard is removed, as long as the vessel remains in union with the Infinite, then another special message for a time can be given. We of the family of Adam need the outside symbol removed so we can see that it is not just an outside thing.
Israeli christians say HaShem too, it's the local word for God, just like South-Asian christians say Allah. Words are for communicating ideas and feelings between people, not the property of any group. God is greater than religions.
If you did something that you wanted to do - whether It's right or wrong - then do it ( or maybe not ), but don't try to feel good about it and give all kinda false and stupid explainations why It's no problem, just shut up and finish !!, you're anyways an outsider .......
No, it's just another neurotic way to not take Gods name in vain. "Noun" is also shem in hebrew, so pretty much every word for God, or even to describe God, is a name by the logic of hebrew grammar. Thus, even the english noun God becomes a "name" and must be written G-d. HaShem is a solution to handle a naming-taboo, just like english-speakers say N-word and F-word instead of the taboo word.
well maybe his new sort of "eccentric" look is a part of a statement about not caring about what people think anymore? and if you stopped liking his music because he got rid of a stupid beard, you're pretty superficial
I'm not a fan of fundamentalist religion as long as it doesn't hurt anybody and if that's how Matisyahu found God then bless him. I just hope he doesn't become fundamentalist :/

@BikeAnarchist True,Religion can be funny.
@benignuman The "beard" is rather a matter of "hasidim/Kabalists" NOT Orthodoxy, and certainly not Judaism.
