I'm not religious, but I can still appreciate their message, and I really respect and agree with many of your views. End of the day, we are all living on the same planet and we are at least all bonded by that. And we all do a little dance to a bit of M&sons
I think this song is about being under the curse of sin and hating it. A lot of people-Christians usually- over-interpret Mumford songs because they try to fit too much into them, like the whole gospel. Mumford and Sons rarely try to do that much with a song although they often offer hope at the end. This song is very thematically similar to Hopeless Wanderer. Lots of inspiration from Steinbeck in Mumford and Sons as well. The whole notion of being "east of eden," our separation from our maker (who M&S tell us in other songs that we were made to meet) because of our rebellion after the fall.
