The best bit is at 2:11 where the make up person, presumably retreats. And the politician who has been laughing at her jokes suddenly, but subtly, drops his smile and looks ta her with contempt. Showing he has been 'faking it'
"Не давши слово - крепись, а давши - держись." The semantic translation of this russian proverb is something like "Promise is debt". And as for "Раз солгал, навек лгуном стал" that is "He that deceives is ever suspected".
That symbol is a Valknut, a symbol connecting to the burial sites of Norwegian gods like Odin, often thought to relate to Norwegian religious practices involving death
@@alejandrodemis8201 norse-mythology.org/symbols/the-valknut/ Yeah, it's widely agreed upon as a symbol revolving around Death, this article among others states it around 7 paragraphs in.
I have this very same symbol tattooed. I didn’t get it for any other reason beyond I liked the design but it’s interesting to learn that it has a rich history. Unfortunately I have been asked before if it’s a nazi symbol but I supposed the Germans stole quite a few old symbols back then.
The fucking malice in this man's face when he thinks everyone has stopped watching is an art form in itself. The way he goes from "friendly and charming" to "ready to stab you in the back" with just a few muscles is quite extraordinary.
I love the symbolism in this video, it really makes you see things in a different light, from another perspective. Dan's voice is as beautiful as ever, and the backing as damn amazing. Well done, guys. (Bastille is literally one of only two British bands I have heard of and now like, and I'm British myself.)
Intro The song’s intro is a voiceover sampled from a 1971 short film “Social Seminar: Changing.” The woman says, “And I don’t that that’s a selfish want. I really don’t. I’m not saying that I have this capacity because it’s hard to develop that capacity on your own, when you’re being stopped at every turn.” This quote forecasts one topic of the song: the inability to grow in a relationship when it feels like the relationship itself is what’s keeping you from growing. Verse 1 At the beginning of the sung portion of “Fake It,” Dan Smith sings, “Drive around, nighttime, nowhere to go.” He’s spending time with the person, “killing time” with her. There’s no purpose to their wanderings-they think being together should be enough. But their relationship isn’t what it used to be, and she’s begun making fun of him to his face, so much so that he sings, “Melt me down, I’m like wax to your jokes.” And the relationship has put Smith through a figurative blender of experiences and emotions: “Lost and found, knocking heads, laying low.” At the end of it all, he’s unsure if there’s a “point reliving crimes to lose this,” by which he means he wonders if fighting about it to bring closure to the relationship would be worth it-maybe it would just be easier to “fake it.” Pre-Chorus Here, Bastille tells us, “Still wanna waste all of my time / I wanna waste all of my time / With you,” suggesting that maybe he feels it’s not time for the relationship to end (or at least that he’d rather it not end). He still wants the relationship, and he wishes for how it used to be. Chorus But it seems that keeping the relationship would be impossible: “Oh, my lover, my lover, my love / We can never go back.” The relationship has gotten to a point that it feels ruined and hopeless. Bastille’s lead singer tells the woman that “[w]e can only do our best to recreate.” They can pretend like the relationship is as strong as it once was. Dan Smith tells her, “Don’t turn over, turn over the page,” by which he means, “Don’t move on to the next thing or leave me.” But he adds, “We should rip it straight out.” He wants them both to acknowledge that they can’t go back to what they had but that he still wants them to do their “very best to fake it.” They can pretend like they have the love they once had, but it still feels hopeless to him. Verse 2 The second verse is Bastille describing how the narrator wants the relationship to be faked, how he would be satisfied with a copy of joy instead of actually having it. Dan Smith sings, “Show me joy, flower through disarray / Let’s destroy each mistake we made.” They can create a copy of their original relationships and emotionlessly ignore the mistakes and try to enjoy only the good while the mirage lasts. They will “restore the color back to the grey”-give it life again-because “[t]here’s no pride in sharing scars to prove it.” The failure of the relationship makes him so sad that he’d rather ignore the truth and live in fake beauty for a little while. Bridge The bridge nicely sums up the entire meaning of “Fake It.” Dan Smith sings, “Help me turn a blind eye / Days and nights we lost to weakness.” Here he acknowledges that they have ruined the relationship themselves and that he wants to keep pretending it wasn’t their fault and that the relationship is still beautiful even though he knows both of those aren’t true. Deeper thoughts on the meaning of “Fake It” by Bastille I don’t think that the song writer actually wants to keep faking the relationship. I think he knows that would be unhealthy, but that makes this song more powerful because it’s a truer expression of the huge emotional need/desire welling up in him as he contemplates a relationship lost that he really wishes he and the other person hadn’t messed up. He’s sad he wasted the opportunity due to his own “weakness,” and he’d like to ignore the truth of what he’s done and simply pretend like the relationship is still fun, happy, and strong. I understand what Dan Smith and Bastille are saying here. I’ve ruined things before, and I’d much rather ignore the truth of my own fault or the terribleness of the situation than accept those and have to move on-to do the much harder thing. It’s a human situation we all have to deal with, and it’s difficult. That being said, I think this kind of open, emotional sharing on Bastille’s part shows a depth of song meaning that you don’t usually see in popular music. Dan Smith doesn’t blame only the other party, acknowledges his guilt, and (by writing the song in the first place) shows he knows the truth of the situation. That Bastille and Dan Smith can separate the ideas of deep desire from the ideas of what actually should be done deepens the song meaning and invites further listener introspection and self-consideration after listening to such a song.
Omg yes then when they showed House of Parliament at the end which is basically the root of all lies and the master of faking it I was like oh my god that shade

Not only is Bastille's music very enjoyable and high quality, but their song meanings and music videos are very insightful, as stated by several users in this comment section. In this video, I love how they used a news reporter putting on a fake attitude as an analogy for "faking it" in a romantic relationship. Stormer for life
i think the music video is meant to portray how modern day politicians constantly put on a front and essentially 'fake' their confidence in the decisions they make. then, behind the scenes, they are panicking and stressed with no idea how to handle the situation except to put on a smile when the camera's rolling. this would also make sense as dan tweets a lot about british politics and seems very disillusioned by it. although this way of 'faking it' doesn't necessarily fit in with the lyrics, i think it definitely is another way of seeing the title.
Another theory is that it's a reporter/journalist, not a politician. Most people are saying that the reporter wants to say what he really thinks is right, how he feels, or even what is the truth, but has to put that aside and say what's on the teleprompter, fake the smiles. I'm a fan of both theories.
+Nik Cruz in most of it the guy is portrayed like a politician with the hand movements and surroundings but at the end it shows him like he's about to tell us about the news on scene
Though this doesn't only have to mean with politicians, journalists, or any social figure. This also represents how every day many many many people have to fake a smile, but when people look away they drop it because they can't do it anymore, just how it happened with the makeup lady.
It could still be interpreted as a love song because Bastille makes music videos that almost never correspond with the lyrics. Like "Oblivion", "Pompeii", "Good Grief", "Of the Night", and "Fake It". The song lyrics in this song do seem to imply that Dan is talking about his lover, or maybe he really is talking about a news reporter who is slowing going mad who is forced to fake it for the camera and that forces him to go mad. Because only the artist will truly be able to understand the intended message within their art. Welp that's just my opinion, but the great thing about art is that one can interpret it 1,000 different ways. Bastille is my favorite band and I'm glad that we can enjoy this music together.
+Jack Iribarren i'm pretty sure this isn't just about a single news reporter faking it. I think it's subtlety hinting at how everyone has to fake stuff to make it better but it's a different story behind the scenes.
+Harrison James yeah I never interpreted it a single news reporter faking it, I also felt the message said how everyone has to fake it sometimes. but like I said, everyone has their own way of viewing the song
I went to the concert on the 1st of November in the 02 and they were absolutely incredible but this song was 100% the standout for me!! AMAZING CONCERT!!
+ultrakamaq Just, The song is called Fake It. So, this could mean faking happiness or even sanity. The video conveys how politicians can easily use their position to spread fake information, or news people can as well.
+Vince Oh I understand where you are coming from, its hard for me to explain. Yes, Faking something in not just a concept in life because it's real, but anything can be a concept if you put it into something such as a video or picture. Take conceptual photography for example, there's a picture, with an idea behind it.
The best album of Bastille ever made period. I hope the next it will better for intire world to see this king of creatively and originality of genuine good sound.
The best part about this is when the red, blue and white backdrop were showing the difference in how leaders' real sociopolitical stands or activism or stand really were. The body language really say a lot.
This is honestly my favorite music video. It's so captivating yet also kind of subconsciously creepy/unsettling when he speaks and smiles? It honestly captures politics so well?? The actor needs a reward. I can't stop staring and watching this video.
i have “recreate” tattooed on my wrist because of this music video. it reminds me of how it feels when you overcome something really hard that no one knows; and the relief hits you like the sunlight hit him and you can finally exhale
This song is kind how I imagine the Doctor's time with Missy was. They had known each other since they were kids, and they knew that they could never fix their relationship completely, so they tried to recreate it, and when Missy was crying in front of the Doctor, showing remorse, he thought she was faking it to impress him.
I think this politician guy or whoever he is is the same person at the beginning of "Send The Off" (You can see him at the top right corner on a giant screen). He says "It was a slight on my honor, so he deserved it. But we're talking about the most brilliant mind this world has ever seen!" If I'm right, it might give some insight to the possible meanings of this video. :)
Used to dedicate this song to my crush The day he was in another relationship broke me Looking back at those days, it's funny and sad at the same time. As i grew older i realised how to have a strong heart and not to be obsessed over something you cant get

Found this song when I was 14,now Im 20 and still rocks like the 1st time I heard it. Ageless
Me too 😂 I was 14 and in my last year of middle school, I honestly miss walking home from middle school especially in the fall because of the colors lol
The best bit is at 2:11 where the make up person, presumably retreats. And the politician who has been laughing at her jokes suddenly, but subtly, drops his smile and looks ta her with contempt. Showing he has been 'faking it'
"Не давши слово - крепись, а давши - держись." The semantic translation of this russian proverb is something like
"Promise is debt". And as for "Раз солгал, навек лгуном стал" that is "He that deceives is ever suspected".
That symbol is a Valknut, a symbol connecting to the burial sites of Norwegian gods like Odin, often thought to relate to Norwegian religious practices involving death
Is there an article where they talk about this specific one? I haven't seen it anywhere else in the internet.
@@alejandrodemis8201 norse-mythology.org/symbols/the-valknut/
Yeah, it's widely agreed upon as a symbol revolving around Death, this article among others states it around 7 paragraphs in.
I have this very same symbol tattooed. I didn’t get it for any other reason beyond I liked the design but it’s interesting to learn that it has a rich history. Unfortunately I have been asked before if it’s a nazi symbol but I supposed the Germans stole quite a few old symbols back then.
1:30 is the comforting smile I think I've ever seen haha Great acting by the guy, very expressive.
Will Hapgood good actor
Four years later, still such a good song, and one of my favorite bands
The fucking malice in this man's face when he thinks everyone has stopped watching is an art form in itself. The way he goes from "friendly and charming" to "ready to stab you in the back" with just a few muscles is quite extraordinary.
I love the symbolism in this video, it really makes you see things in a different light, from another perspective. Dan's voice is as beautiful as ever, and the backing as damn amazing. Well done, guys. (Bastille is literally one of only two British bands I have heard of and now like, and I'm British myself.)
I like Coldplay and The Police as well, if you like rock then you could try Royal Blood
Intro
The song’s intro is a voiceover sampled from a 1971 short film “Social Seminar: Changing.” The woman says, “And I don’t that that’s a selfish want. I really don’t. I’m not saying that I have this capacity because it’s hard to develop that capacity on your own, when you’re being stopped at every turn.” This quote forecasts one topic of the song: the inability to grow in a relationship when it feels like the relationship itself is what’s keeping you from growing.
Verse 1
At the beginning of the sung portion of “Fake It,” Dan Smith sings, “Drive around, nighttime, nowhere to go.” He’s spending time with the person, “killing time” with her. There’s no purpose to their wanderings-they think being together should be enough. But their relationship isn’t what it used to be, and she’s begun making fun of him to his face, so much so that he sings, “Melt me down, I’m like wax to your jokes.”
And the relationship has put Smith through a figurative blender of experiences and emotions: “Lost and found, knocking heads, laying low.” At the end of it all, he’s unsure if there’s a “point reliving crimes to lose this,” by which he means he wonders if fighting about it to bring closure to the relationship would be worth it-maybe it would just be easier to “fake it.”
Pre-Chorus
Here, Bastille tells us, “Still wanna waste all of my time / I wanna waste all of my time / With you,” suggesting that maybe he feels it’s not time for the relationship to end (or at least that he’d rather it not end). He still wants the relationship, and he wishes for how it used to be.
Chorus
But it seems that keeping the relationship would be impossible: “Oh, my lover, my lover, my love / We can never go back.” The relationship has gotten to a point that it feels ruined and hopeless.
Verse 2
The second verse is Bastille describing how the narrator wants the relationship to be faked, how he would be satisfied with a copy of joy instead of actually having it.
Bridge
The bridge nicely sums up the entire meaning of “Fake It.” Dan Smith sings, “Help me turn a blind eye / Days and nights we lost to weakness.” Here he acknowledges that they have ruined the relationship themselves and that he wants to keep pretending it wasn’t their fault and that the relationship is still beautiful even though he knows both of those aren’t true.
Deeper thoughts on the meaning of “Fake It” by Bastille
I don’t think that the song writer actually wants to keep faking the relationship.
That Bastille and Dan Smith can separate the ideas of deep desire from the ideas of what actually should be done deepens the song meaning and invites further listener introspection and self-consideration after listening to such a song.
my thoughts..explained !
Thank you, this is what I was looking for!
I cant stop listening to this
Yup
Same
man that guy is the best actor i have ever seen
This got me thinking that media shows what they want to transmit, yet the reporter it self wants to expose his opinion but, he can't
That's what I thought!
I love everyone's interpretations it's amazing to see how we all think
Omg yes then when they showed House of Parliament at the end which is basically the root of all lies and the master of faking it I was like oh my god that shade
it took me 4:11 to realise what the video meant then it ended
exactly what I was thinking
Never have I ever met a more charismatic music video actor. Kudos. Thank you for an incredible performance.
"Sir, how do you plan to fix the economy?"
"I wanna waste all my time, I wanna waste all my time"
LOVE IT!
yooo
no cb sie tu nie spodziewalem XD
Shit man. Last year when my mom kicked me out I listended to this album all the time in my car and I would play this song after visiting my bf and hitting the road to drive 4 hours home. 🙍 makes me remember the days i had to sleep in my car and pretend everything was okay.
I just ran away from a toxic home and this song is what I cry to, especially when I'm grieving over my little sister I won't get to spend time with anymore.
@@whitleyphillips6092 I hope you'll do better in the months and years to come and I hope you can find a way to help your little sister as well :'( . Wish you better days ❤🌷
Well Dan smith aged quickly
I'm the original commenter btw in the last video
+OasisDawn Jamaa you don't get jokes do you
Looks like he didn't age with grace
+Weslley Ferreira ayyyyy!True Stormer
+Weslley Ferreria TRIGGERED
This band slays every single f*cking time! ^0^
I KNOW RIGHT
I love their first album and good grief but this song is just boring
+Jonny Coxon it's really good to me, I love it, really brings the night time out
+Jonny Coxon it was boring to me too but after i listened to it a dozen times now i love it lol
Joshua Kalempouw me too.
This news reporter is a better lip singer than 99% of music.lly users 😂
😹😹😹⭐
i agree lmao
lol
so, how do you say it:
DEMONIZED...
PATRONIZED...
Weaponized!
and so on and so for;)
lol
"Αλλα λεει και αλλα κανει" means that "he says something but does something different than what he said" in greek.
Thanks that's really interesting! :)
I knew it WAS greek! omgs lol
Thanks!

4 years later and this is still the best acting I've seen in a music video
+Nik Cruz this video has more theory's then FNAF
THE PROBLEM SOLVER I didnt even know that was possible until now....*shivers*
Though this doesn't only have to mean with politicians, journalists, or any social figure. This also represents how every day many many many people have to fake a smile, but when people look away they drop it because they can't do it anymore, just how it happened with the makeup lady.
i thought this was a love song... then Bastille upload a video that obviously doesn't talk about love... 😶 (still love it)
It could still be interpreted as a love song because Bastille makes music videos that almost never correspond with the lyrics.
The beauty of Bastille songs is that you can interpret it any way you want and it's not wrong
Katya Raskin true

Bunny ohhh :3
I went to the concert on the 1st of November in the 02 and they were absolutely incredible but this song was 100% the standout for me!! AMAZING CONCERT!!
Hands down one of the best music videos ever!
I love this concept
sí
The concept Is of the Business?
+ultrakamaq Just, The song is called Fake It. So, this could mean faking happiness or even sanity. The video conveys how politicians can easily use their position to spread fake information, or news people can as well.
I don't really see how it's a concept though.
'Faking it' was conceptualised thousands of years ago, back when we began to lie as a species.
+Vince Oh I understand where you are coming from, its hard for me to explain. Yes, Faking something in not just a concept in life because it's real, but anything can be a concept if you put it into something such as a video or picture. Take conceptual photography for example, there's a picture, with an idea behind it.
For whatever reason, I am obsessed with this music video.
Same !
I totally agree. The gentleman in the video did a fantastic job syncing his lips to the lyrics!! Also the emotion was incredible!
SERIOUSLY this actor is SO GOOD!!!! I both love to HATE him, ane love how natural he makes that corpo vibe. Uncanny!!! I hope he gets more roles!
Why is Bastille so good? I can be in any mood and I enjoy listening to Bastille 😍
second favoirte song off the album, after glory
Jelly Rolls I like this and Send Them Off
Jelly Rolls this is actually my favorite. With Winter of out youth as my second
Jelly Rolls 3rd glorys my second ky first is way beyond
I saw them in Amsterdam! FANTASTIC!
Shout-out to the actor in the video. It wasn't easy to bring that speech into life with only body language but he did it brilliantly
This is honestly my favorite music video. It's so captivating yet also kind of subconsciously creepy/unsettling when he speaks and smiles? It honestly captures politics so well?? The actor needs a reward. I can't stop staring and watching this video.
this was few of the first songs i heard from bastille, instantly fell in love
Tenho um problema sério com esta banda, porra, vcs são muito bons!
Mesmo!
Brazil rules
Incredibly talented actor, incredible surreal video and a song thats aural paradise
i have “recreate” tattooed on my wrist because of this music video. it reminds me of how it feels when you overcome something really hard that no one knows; and the relief hits you like the sunlight hit him and you can finally exhale
this song is perfect to describe life, politics, love and journalism
Damn Dan got old. He didn't age with grace.
Eyyy
I don't know whether to be angry or not
I understood that reference
+Gareth Parker same :')
I've been looking for a comment like this 😂
they deserve way more recognition, their work is truly amazing, and it always send a message, I love them!! bravoo!
2:46 that high background voice though oml
I can't get over how good the cinematography is here. There's so many layers to it.
This song is kind how I imagine the Doctor's time with Missy was. They had known each other since they were kids, and they knew that they could never fix their relationship completely, so they tried to recreate it, and when Missy was crying in front of the Doctor, showing remorse, he thought she was faking it to impress him.
The politician looks like David Cameron mixed with Nigel Farage. 😹
probably the point
+Lola Poo I agree
Ikr good one and bores Johnson
that's because he's meant to be the picture-perfect corporate shill politician
He even has the same hand actions as them
21 days until Wild World! Wooo, Bastille, this video is awesome! Thank you :)) 🙌💕
Why isn't this song bigger? Never came to understand. Definitely the best voice of this generation
I'll NEVER get over how GOOD this song is
I think this politician guy or whoever he is is the same person at the beginning of "Send The Off" (You can see him at the top right corner on a giant screen). He says "It was a slight on my honor, so he deserved it. But we're talking about the most brilliant mind this world has ever seen!" If I'm right, it might give some insight to the possible meanings of this video. :)
This is an undeniable masterpiece! It's wonderful to acknowledge how much meaning has been placed into four minutes and ten seconds of footage! :) :)
heard this playing in h&m and now I'm obsessed
I love that speach insertion at the start. She sounds like from some old Disney film and it's really calming
Used to dedicate this song to my crush
The day he was in another relationship broke me
Looking back at those days, it's funny and sad at the same time. As i grew older i realised how to have a strong heart and not to be obsessed over something you cant get
I swear this was up earlier?
yo same. I shared it on twitter this afternoon lmao
reupload i think
yeah cause I remember watching this and being reminded by Donald Trump
I literally played it on my tv and danced all over my house i'm pretty sure they reuploaded
+Melissa Turland omg I thought the same ahaha

Can you tell me who the women that talks in the beginning?
This is a really great video, especially for the events unfolding currently...
Damn Bastille, you are not gonna make me regret preordering the new album
I love how they make their videos. The guy here is fantastic at portraying hard hard it can be to go on and that sometimes you are just faking it to get by.
My god this video. Perfect. So brilliantly put together every single element, and you see new things every time you watch it. That acting also, it doesn't get much better than that. 10/10
i love this song so much man i need it in the charts
this is my first Bastille song, and I know nothing about it, so, before watching this video, I thought it was a generic song about relationships.
Were you prepared for how good they are??
+maisie moo I dove I to the song totally blind, so I was not prepared for anything. I haven't listened to any other of their songs yet, but this one sounds amazing.
+sorry, i cant think of a cool name name Aw I so recommend listening to their other songs there first album is just amaaazing 🙊
+sorry, i cant think of a cool name name all their videos are pretty crazy like this one 😊 haha
+maisie moo yeah, I'll do that when I have time. it feels so great when we find new music we like.
Não me canso de ouvir essa música. Bastille, uma banda que me encantou desde o primeiro momento e só fica melhor. Dá pra sentir a energia que sai de cada música, parabéns, vocês são maravilhosos
I like it because the actor is in the know of what is going on, but plays the professional newscaster even though he knows it's all wrong.
Every time i see this I cant help but to smile.
Not only is this song great but the actor lip singing is incredible.
I need to meet this man and give him a high five.

He had me crying when i saw them live at leeds
Dylan Telford same!
Powerful body language. Action speaks louder than words.
this man's acting is phenomenal.
one of the most underrated songs ever
obsessed with this song.
s/o to the actor for being able to make so many interesting and descriptive faces tho
There are so many songs I feel like should have been the big one that represents what this band is to the masses more than Pompeii...and this is definately one of them.
Just heard this song live in Tromsø! Great song, great band, much love from Norway!
Great voice and I love this song. 👌
the new album os gonna be soo good 🙌❤
1.92 Million views? This song has those good vibes that I love especially since my headphones pickup bass.
