  • This isn’t necessarily gonna teach you how to read wafer locks but maybe offer it as alternative to impressioning and some helpful tips on how, when and why to read wafer locks. Thanks for watching!

Man, that UV trick is really cool. I've never seen that before...gotta try it! Also great for checking your locks for scorpions. 😁 I've thought of using painter's tape to block the glare, but the Sharpie idea works nice. Great video!

Thanks! Learned about the UV trick from Tom Lynch, when he did a wafer lock class via SOPL a few years back. The light and pen can be bought on Amazon dirt cheap. I’ve had mine for at least 10 yrs and the marker still marks. The light had the batteries corrode and leak out. The smaller pen light they have will actually aim and is better than what I used in the video.

Great video Bob, thank you, this is very helpful-kind of a niche skill but pretty cool when it comes in handy! And nice tip/demo with the UV marker light too. I have the Sieveking books (basic and advanced) on my to-buy short list, you’re like the third person to recommend them 😊 And congratulations on closing in on 200 subs! It seems like just yesterday you were under 100 and complaining that it didn’t seem like anyone was watching lol 😆

Thanks for uploading this! I've always been interested in learning to sight read wafer locks. P.S. IMO the most challenging aspect of it is determining what depths the particular lock you're working with uses. For example, despite having the same keyway, Yale disc locks use 1-5, whereas Hudson ones employ 1-6 (With half depths W and X (Which are 1-1/2 and 2-1/2 respectively)). How do you go about figuring out what the lock type is?

Very carefully lol… As I showed, the wafer profiles aren’t always the same either. Some are round on the ends, others are square. It’s guess work for me. If you use a code machine, you can do half cuts going with your code cards d/s’s. If filing, then it’s gonna be part reading, part impressioning where the reading is just to get you in the ballpark. This is all jmo. Get that book I mentioned, it covers far more than I can. Thanks for watching!
