We are all born curious. Yet, as we grow older, our curiosity diminishes. We fear judgment, worry about the impression we’ll make on others if we ask questions, or decide that exploring new ideas is a waste of time. But curiosity, it turns out, is critical for thriving at work and in life-and losing it affects everything from our productivity to our happiness. The good news, says Francesca Gino, is that we can recapture that inquisitive instinct. Learn why curiosity is so important and what you can do to foster it, in yourself and in others.
#ideachallenge Francesca Gino is an award-winning researcher and teacher, and a tenured professor at Harvard Business School. Her consulting and speaking clients include Bacardi, Akamai, Disney, Goldman Sachs, Honeywell, Novartis, P&G, and the U.S. Air Force, Army, and Navy. She has been honored as one of the world’s Top 40 Business Professors under 40 and one of the world’s 50 most influential management thinkers. Her work has been featured on CNN and NPR, as well as in the Economist, Financial Times, New York Times, Newsweek, Scientific American, and Psychology Today. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I hope that instead of taking this video down that TED keeps it up but ads a disclaimer up front, or maybe reupload it with a disclaimer. It is important for people to understand what misleading information looks like. It is commonly known that misinformation comes from shady websites, Facebook posts, or uncited memes, but that's not the only way misinformation makes it way to the public. All it takes is the backing of a major university like Harvard and the TEDx brand name and suddenly messages are simply trusted. The thing is that these are sources that should be trusted, but when people abuse this system they end up creating distrust in experts. This is why ethics is so important. It is also why we shouldn't criticize and cancel those who question experts and the validity of their studies.

I absolutely agree, just as any academic journal will not remove her work but rater issue an expression of concern or retraction while leaving its contents available. Knowledge produced is knowledge, whether it is knowledge of how lying increase creativity, or of exactly why that is not true and how misinformation is propagated.

Well said, I just found out about this subject - this is just the 3rd piece of media I've seen on it. And she is quite amazing, very attractive, obviously passionate and with the open positive demeanor of the new progressive movement. But her presentation is compelling, not comprehensive, influential not info-driven - and a narrative (data couched in prose style of presentation instead of a data graphics driven presentation. She carry's herself like an authority, in a very agreeable and open way I can see why she has been so successful for so long. Everyone wants an open thoughtful relatable professor like this one... The opening tart story: It is not a sophisticated post-modern thought to see a tart drop from a table and then "create" a "deconstructed" pastiche of a tart dropping from a table. What did we learn from that dessert?...
Had I not known about the data fudging I would believe this woman, she seems to be eminently truthful and reliable.
This is a social scientist who may be a sociopath. How else could she know she's lying yet appear so truthful?

She clearly had a stamp of trustworthiness that people like Harvard and TEDx added to. She was invited to speak at Google and Harvard Business Review and yet the same research which afforded her access to some of these stages has now been proven to be false. An important lesson to remind people that just because someone has a stage or has a mark/seal of approval from others, doesn’t mean we abandon our critical thinking faculties.
Also we need better peer review systems clearly. This system is broken. How much more of this is out there?

Not often discussed is that there is an unconscious effect of her personal style on her believability to gullible American institutions. Her affect, her dress, her accent contribute to her "otherness" that influence how we judge her credibility. In US academia, there is an implicit bias toward those from other (European) cultures (no, this is not an anti-woke comment) who are believed to bring novel perspectives to the debate. Gino milks this to a T, and she's exaggerating those attributes. She knows she'll be cut slack because of this in the US. It takes hutzpah for an academic to make such a jejune presentation as we see here with her rehearsed personal style and faux self-help narrative, and she was banking that it would always work to her advantage. "Banking" was meant literally - check how many millions of dollars she was pocketing on the corporate lecture circuit!

Most curious minds will observe many things but will miss out on 'fully' comprehending a central concept. Mastery of a singular skill takes years, if not an entire lifetime. And however based on data, it would seem that focusing on a single framework would help achieve far more than otherwise. Sometimes the best position to view a painting is not to stand in front of it; you have to take a few steps back to enjoy the entire work.
